Sometimes I would like to hear that a Dragon Age Character -preferred the main character - braekes the 4th Wall.
Like Dead Pool.
As a player, sometimes I want to be involved with the discussion.

I think it is a very funny feature.

Unfortunately if you're going for a "mostly serious, with funny bits" tone, it doesn't work very well.

"Can I get you a ladder? So you can get off my back!" was funny the first time.

The 1567th time it happened made me want my propagandist to really be silent, with the mute button.

Breaking the four wall as an easter egg yes, but in most cases no.

This might be the closest I've seen DA do to date, but its hilarious and worth posting.

This isn't written by Bertolt Brecht nor is it supposed to be a comedy.

But it IS written by Lukas Kristjanson. Or, at least, partly.

Actually, that little bit of monologue Lukas wrote with no feedback at all.  He admitted in a thread not too long ago that not even most of the rest of the team knew about that until after the game launched.

I agree with you.  That's as close as I'd want to get to outright 4th wall breaking.

You people forget, there was this quest giver in DA 2 who asks you to find Ninette. If you wait long enough before you actually talk to him, he says "Doesn't anybody see this exclamation mark above my head?!".

This isn't breaking the 4th wall.  Breaking the fourth wall is when a character or characters acts as if they are aware of the presence of the *audience* and then address or involve said audience.  It's not the same thing as being aware of game conventions that are generally *treated* as if they only exist in the world-as-viewed-by-the-player instead of in the world-as-viewed-by-the-characters.

For instance, you could have a scene in a play where the characters suddenly make use of the steps leading down to the orchestra pit.  Up until then, the audience had assumed that those stairs weren't part of the scene.  Now they are.  But the fourth wall--the metaphorical wall between the audience and the characters in the play--is still intact.

You could have a game where the game conventions 100% were the "physics" of the world and the characters freely talk about respawning and buffs and hit points and spell points . . . yet the fourth wall would still be intact.

Breaking the fourth wall serves one purpose and one purpose only: to destroy dramatic tension.  It is only properly used when you are *intentionally* trying to remove all dramatic seriousness from the work.  If that's what you're GOING for, some kind of "this might seem a bit alarming but don't worry folks, it's all just make-believe!" then fine.  I play games where that's perfectly suitable.  I don't think the Dragon Age series is one of them.

"The hero cannot die, he redeems himself with each step he partakes. "

"His "death" is only a diagram back to the Waking World, an unreality in the world of Thedas."

"The hero is never overwhelmed, he can cut time-holes in the middle of combat, and ACCESS ALL."

Ever heard of Bertolt Brecht? Breaking the 4th Wall does not only serve one purpose, heck even children plays use it to engage its audience.

The definition you give is for theatre. I see breaking the fourth wall or passing the fiction-reality barrier as acknowledging the fictional world or segments of it, as fiction. "Doesn't anyone see the exclamation mark above my head" is breaking it since the character should not be aware of it "in the world", yet he acknowledges it. I don't think It needs to have the level of effect you believe it should, to qualify as breaking the wall.

The closet thing I can remember is a conversation Hawke has with Carver if you give him Malcoms letter to Carver's namesake. One of the options Hawke says is something that results in him or her saying "I'm sure someone spent way too long on my name."

Or possibly when Javaris talks about his guards look so similar.

 Oh my god! I would love to see more of that kind of stuff.

I agree with the easter egg idea. Wouldn't want to overdo it and ruin people's seriouz gamingzs.
