Citadel is excellent, especially if you've played the entire series.  The story mission is good, and I'd recommend playing it early so you can unlock the Arena, which allows you to test weapons and tactics outside of missions and eventually unlock the best armour in singleplayer (best stats, anyway).  Leave the party till late in the game, perhaps even after Horizon.

The story mission for From Ashes isn't much (it seems to have be designed on the assumption it will be played eary in the game), but the weapon and crewmate you unlock is worth it.  Prothy isn't as vital to understanding the plot as was thought before the game came out, but he does provide an interesting view on the Protheans.  I recommend you take him in the crew to Thessia.

Leviathan is great, not just in terms of combat, but in atmosphere (the mining settlement was a standout for me).

I'd recommend Omega if you enjoy combat.  The story is good, but I think it would've been better served if it had been built around Nyreen rather than Aria.

Wasn't Omega (like from Ashes) originally supposed to be part of the game?

No. It´s a myth propagated by some uniformed fanboys and EA haters.

People seem to get confused because Aria has a phrase left in the game speaking as if you had completed the DLC. This was obviously something done in advance, in anticipation for the DLC inclusion. I think something similar happens in me2, with Liara having phrases for a confrontation with the shadow broker.

To say that Omega was part of the main game because of one phrase, is like saying that Leviathan was supposed to be for free and part of the extended cut, since shepard and the AI can talk about it in retrospect.

I would not be surprised to discover that the voice-cast recorded all their lines for from ashes and leviathan during the sessions for the main game.

the best are IMO From Ashes and Citadel, they are more than worth it, Leviathan is also pretty good, but not as good as those, Omega is if you have too much money and nothing to spend it on

Spoken like a true ignoramus. It's no myth. That's because of the leaked ME3 script - which forced Bioware to do rewrites. I read it ages ago and from what I remember, we were supposed to use the Omega 4 relay again (nothing to do with Collectors this time) and take on Cerberus.

Javik was originally the Catalyst - which is where From Ashes came into play, and the Virmire Survivor was meant to be a part of that mission, which would've played out with a possible death - but that was later taken out and put into the Citadel coup - the stand-off.

The From Ashes video files have unfinished scene renders where Liara and Kaidan/Ashley are viewing the Prothean footage. Same as those unfinished scenes in the game files - during the Citadel beam run that shows your squaddies getting trampled by the Makos that Harbinger is shooting at - which was a clear indication that the Extended Cut stuff was indeed part of the main game but later cut out to be sold seperately as DLC. which was a pretty stink move indeed.

Man, do not confuse earlier plans that were discarded with the entire different situation of removing content and turning it into DLC close to the completion of the game. By the way, it´s a fact that Omega was not even done by the same department that made the main game.  They were, for the most part, working in another building, in another city.

As for the squad-mates dying, This is proof of nothing but the fact that there were cuts in the ending sequence. They can still die, but in a simpler way. In the whole trilogy you can find parts that were supposed to be richer in content but were shortened. This is not a proof that Bioware will release an expanded DLC for these segments in the next months. The fact that squad-mates in me2 have phrases for the earlier recruitments is not a proof of a future dlc expansion, but merely an indication of a discarded concept, most likely implemented so that people would have to make less disc-swaps on xbox360.

But what the hell... ME fanboys simply believe in what they want to believe, even if they have to turn facts that do not prove their lies into evidence by means of intellectual dishonesty or idiotic handling and interpretation of the info.

Locations, Charactes, Sequences and other stuff being cut or done differently is true for every game out there, and no indication of anything.

Edit-On Topic:

I should probably say that I own all ME3 story DLCs and would not want to miss one of them. They all have their strong an weak points, and overall they are all worth the money, imo.->At least if you plan to play the game more than once (more).

Omega still felt like it was ripped out of the main game, as did Javik (he had content on the gorram disk)

Javik, yes, but Omega seems like a totally separated campaign. since it takes several mini-missions, and without your squad-mates.

There were probably plans for a common mission on omega during earlier stages of planning the game, but the idea was expanded to the point that an entire DLC seemed to better fit. There´s no way that omega, as it is, was simply ripped from the game. It was done by a different studio. The only thing that the main game offers is to recognize that there will be a DLC one day (unless it gets canceled) and they merely made Aria having a phrase (very bland and vague) recognizing that she is now back in control of Omega. But anything could have happened there. All we know is that she´s back in control and omega was not destroyed. Beyond that, the team responsible for the dlc had ample freedom. Lots of different things could have happened there. She says nothing regarding the general, or adjutants, or her deceased partner. They needed to fill the gap of meeting her after completing the dlc, and that´s what they did.

They could easily do the same in ME2 with Liara having a few phrases about being ready to take down the shadow broker, and even a few phrases about having already taken him down, without being evidence that LOTSB being content removed from the vanilla game to be sold separately later.

In the case of Javik, I have no doubts that the day one DLC was produced at the same time as the main game, since he changes the main missions and even the other characters have special comments for him or only spoken if he´s available or present. But the same is not true about Omega.

In the cases of kasumi and zaed, the only part in which a character has his behavior altered by their presence is involving two top-ranking blue-suns on omega. Aside from that, the only content involving new voices and scenes (probably done prior to their dlcs) are a few phrases from Edi, Joker, and Kelly, aside from one comment from Miranda. Oh, and Shepard during the suicide mission.

This was probably taken down because even though cerberus had access to the omega 4 relay, the preservation or destruction of the collector base would provide a major point of alternative content if you crossed the relay to the other side in order to confront whatever cerberus presence present there.

From Ashes is worth it in my opinion. The squadmate is alright and he is fully fleshed out with dialogues in missions like the other companions, in fact there's at least one where it should be damn near compulsory to take him at least once.

Citadel is okay as long as you can take it for what it is: blatant fan-service made to appease fans and mark the end of Shepard's story. It has a lot of potential though depending on all your choices with companions and stuff, for instance there's moments for every LI companion. Like I said, fan-service.

Leviathan's story is more important than every other DLCs and the missions are all right. I'd advise getting it if you want to know more about the lore of ME3.

I found Omega to be okay, but perhaps the weaker of the DLC. Unlike the others you cannot have your normal companions. I liked the ones you did have, but that can vary from person to person. It is basically one long mission but It's not really necessary though, it doesn't affect much in the way of story bar extra war assets I believe.

So in my opinion From Ashes definitely and Leviathan is also a good idea especially if you want to flesh out the story. Citadel is the fun one and as long as you can handle that kind of fun it'll be worth it. Omega is more debatable though, so if you don't want it I'd just advise not getting it for now.

except the Citadel DLC story is anything but competent. yeah let's throw a party while the galaxy is burning and chase after an idiot clone with abandonment issues that Cerberus forgot about and left lying around.

"why you and not me boooohooooo"

LAME.

whereas the Omega DLC is perfectly fitting with ME3's atmosphere and it's almost like a continuation of the Citadel coup mission. you've booted Cerberus off the Citadel, then put the boot in them real good on Omega.

lol as opposed to washed up Alliance rejects and a clone with an inferiority complex & a Mummy Returns rip-off*. he's as bad as Leng as far as I'm concerned.

*Imhotep hanging on the ledge of the pit of the damned, waits for his woman to pull him up, she chickens out and takes off, he's heartbroken and lets go* - sound familiar?

Yeah, I thought of that movie too.

But having Liara as my LI made it totally believable/worth it.

I've never seen these - where would I look to find these files? I'm interested to see the early concepts.

Also, if I had to rate the DLC's (counting all weapon/gear packs as well):

1) From Ashes: Despite my feelings about day-one downloadable content, Javik is an essential addition to the game. There's not a whole lot of content (30-45 minutes in the Eden Prime mission, and probably an hour or so of unique dialogue for him across the game), but it's invaluable to have an additional squadmate, he provides a lot of interesting viewpoints, and you get a God-tier weapon in the Particle Rifle. Not to mention some of the customization options you get for the squadmates (like Garrus' desert-camo armor) are awesome.

2) Leviathan: Outside of From Ashes, this is the only mission that feels like it's a legitimate part of the game (and not an excuse for Shepard to go off on their own somewhere). You get a lot of additional mission dialogue with your squadmates, the atmosphere is suitably tense and disconcerting, and the plotline (retcons galore) is still interesting enough to keep your attention. Plus, you get some new weapon mods and hefty war assets.

3) Digital Deluxe: I rate this one highly because (a) I love some of the customization options like Liara's "Matriarch" armor, and (B) you get a bunch of extra weapons that are really nice and give you some much-needed variety early on (along with being part of an N7 set).

4) Citadel: As a fan and as someone who watched the "your Shepard can't do side missions while the galaxy's burning" arguments, this DLC is so off-kilter that it's weird. You suddenly have gameplay elements that never showed up in the base game proper (your entire team participating in a mission), the tone just feels off considering the galaxy is in great danger, and it's difficult to reconcile a lot of the lore revelations with everything we've learned over the course of the trilogy. Still, it's very enjoyable, there's a lot of unique dialogue for the squadmates and the arena element was sorely missed after being absent in ME2.

5) Alternate Appearance Pack: I'm not big on Liara or EDI's alternate armors, but Garrus' Terminus suit looks awesome, and the Ajax Armor Shepard can wear is insanely good.

6) Omega: Somewhat enjoyed it. The gameplay feels like an endless shooting gallery most of the time, it's filled with bugs and glitches, and it's hard to get attached to any of the characters, especially when everyone goes back to acting like nothing happened after you finished it. Yet, it has an interesting villain, there are a few nods to decisions you've made and the final boss battle is really fun.

7) Groundside/Firefight Weapon Packs: Hideously overpowered. I don't understand why Bioware released these. Not only are there an absurd amount of weapons (most of which you'll likely never use), but some of them are incredibly broken (Harrier, Venom, etc). I can't see myself buying weapon packs that break the challenge in the game.

It's hard to watch people complain about Citadel because of the story, it was tongue in cheek and supposed to be funny. I found it hilarious bioware poking fun at themselves and letting you kill stuff  for one last time with ALL your surviving squad mates before you get down to saying goodbye to the game and it's characters. 10/10 no if ands buts or maybes.

We complain because of two reasons.

1. A lot of the content isn't that funny and makes no sense if you don't hang around the BSN.

2. It's presented as part of the story, lodged between Sanctuary and Cronos. This isn't some AU but something that is actually occurring while ME3 is happening. And as such it just doesn't fit and does more harm than the endings.

By the time your read this, you've likely already made up your mind -- but incase you're patient enough to read to this point:

Like others have stated, I can't even imagine playing ME3 without ALL of the DLCs  (Overlord an exception - but still good).   I think you will be left in the dark if you don't get Leviathan since that explains the origins of the reapers & other things -- but don't expect any real brain splitters when you converse with Leviathan.

Like many on the forum, we think Leviathan has sawdust for brains as evidenced when it says "we built the catalyst who built the reapers -- which have destroyed some of us"   Then Shep says "now we all gotta pay for your stupid mistake" -- to which Leviathan says "no mistake".   To say any more would be a spoiler.

As with any serious interest (golf, skiing, photography, scuba diving, videography), you're going to have to spend some serious BUCKS.  After 2 years, don't hold your breath for "deals".   The ME trilogy is going to be an "anchor point" in your life anyway you cut it.    Regardless how you feel about playing ME3, keep this in mind -- it GROWS on you the more you play it.   With EXCEL, I document things to see & do in my games.   ME1 & ME2 had about 30-40 rows.   In ME3 I documented some 175.    You are in for a real joy ride.    Enjoy the game, but don't put your  <3  into the ending.

I always say that it was the "right DLC for the wrong game". Even as a tongue-in-cheek work, it has serious tonal shifts from the rest of the game. The galaxy is burning, and my entire crew is either caught up in a glorified gang war or hanging around the Citadel doing nothing besides menial activities. And this was after eight months of diehard fans complaining that it would be impossible to add more side content because Shepard is trying to save the galaxy and they have no time for detours.

That said, I can enjoy it as a standalone piece and I love isolated moments from it, but that's about it.

If you took Citadel seriously/found it humourless/hang around BSN then the problem is with your perception of the DLC not the DLC. You're under no obligation to wait till after sanctuary either, it becomes available after the Cerberus attack on the Citadel. If you chose to wait and that conflicts with your story that's no fault of the DLC, you chose to do it that way.

I'm not sure what you're getting at. It has nothing to do with my "perception" of the story, nor when you do it in the plot. The point is that it's tonally inconsistent with the rest of the game. I enjoy it on its own merits, but that doesn't mean that it's just a bit absurd that you go from a a light, fairly jokey piece of DLC back to the grimdark nature of the main storyline.

I actually enjoyed all the dlc in Mass Efect 3. Citadel was definitely for the fans and it was so hilarious that it was worth the $15 for me. Leviathan I thought was interesting and fun to play.

Now, if the topic was best DLC in all of the ME trilogy then my answer - Lair of the Shadow Broker

Honestly, all the DLC is worth the cost, but in terms of which ones I liked more than the others?

Order goes:

  1. Leviathan
  2. From Ashes
  3. Citadel
  4. Omega

Leviathan is the biggest and to me, most impactful of the DLCs because it answered the burning question of "Just where the flying f*** do the Reapers come from anyway?!"  While at the same hand indirectly explaining the Catalyst and it's reasoning.  Plus the mystery atmosphere and having to solve the "which criteria will help us track it down" aspect is really nifty.

From Ashes adds the ever so controversial (at least he was in the beginning) Javik, and his unique insight into the Prothean culture, while adding some unique scenes as well, including the revelation on Thessia, which is probably his biggest splash.

Citadel being the fanservice DLC that it shamelessly advertises itself as, doesn't disappoint.  You get to see everyone again, get some awesome and hilarious scenes, the entire DLC spends most of it's time shamelessly poking at itself for fun, and rewards afterwards, like the Armax Arena, are pretty nice as well.  It's nowhere near the lore addict's dream, but it's a good old fashioned chunk of nostalgia.

Omega, while still fun, feels...odd?  It doesn't add anything story-wise, besides expand on Aria's story of how TIM punted her from Omega and let's you resolve the conflict the Invasion comic set up.  Petrovsky doesn't deviate from his character, and Nyreen was great for being the first female turian we got to encounter since the comics.  But it lacks the same bit of "fun" the other DLCs have.  I still enjoyed it, don't get me wrong.  Just not as much as the others.
