The character blurbs have been awful.

Really?

I enjoyed all the trailers and reveals so far. Not all of them sang to me, but they were rather exciting.

I guess it's because unlike most people I play games as an awestruck kid rather than a cynical adult. Sure it makes me naive sometimes but I'd rather have a positive or neutral stance rather than an incredibly pessimistic attitude I see some employ...

Lighten up will you :)

I was like you once...but then I got burnt by people too many times.

Hence my cynical attitude.

This is a silly thing to be grumpy about. It's three days from July - which means it's Three Months and Ten days until DA:I releases. I absolutely prefer they continue with the slow release of weekly blurbs and pictures then for them to spoil the way we find/meet these companions. I really don't even want to know if they're LI's for the most part -- because I'm looking FORWARD to meeting them and finding out about them myself.

Three Months, Ten Days. We really do not need full on movie introductions and breakdowns of these characters because it's Dragon Age. We already know they're going to be fantastically written characters who will eventually be more real to us then actual fleshy folks in our lives :P

Given how DA2 was, I'd say that's by no means garuanteed.

I don't really have a problem with any of it.  Though, to be fair, me buying this game was never in doubt.  As such, BioWare doesn't really have to sell to me.  I'm just glad for whatever info I can get.

From just casual observation, seems like a lot of complaints are from people that didn't see a character turn out the way they would have wanted.  Another problem may also be the people who just browse the web and aren't reading the full character reveals, just those pictures.  I can see how those pictures with the quote alone wouldn't tell you much, I think you're meant to read the paragraph descriptor as well as the writer interview.  It may be harder to see those because of the way they stagger the release of the complete set of information.

The blurbs mostly feel like they're trying to hard to be awesome/witty/whatever.  But I don't think it's a big deal.

The only people reading the blurbs and profiles are the fans who visit this place regularly aka DA Fans. I don't think some passerby to the website is going to drop by and read Dorian profile blurb and say "You know this game interest me. After reading that  I am no longer going to buy it."

If these blurb somehow get you less hype about the game. Perhap you really weren't hype for the game to begin with.

Say what you will about DA2, but the characters were great. There, guaranteed.

I really like the idea of the stillshots with the quotes, though I will agree that some (ie Dorian's) seem a bit amateurish. In terms of their grammar I don't see a problem, since it's the characters speaking and therefore impersonal.

I loved the character trailers from Origins and Awakening, they increased my excitement for the game ten-fold and kept me on tenterhooks until it released. However, at least with Origins, I feel they had a lot more time and spare manpower to focus on marketing and hyping the game than they do with Inquisition. With Origins, the game was pretty much finished for a decent amount of time while they were porting it for consoles, giving them room for more focus on marketing (and incorporating Shale into the game). It seems with Inquisition they are more focused on getting the game to the best condition it could possibly be before going gold, which I am okay with. I get my hype from that.

I think a lot of people underestimate the time and energy that goes into the process of trailers and such.

And just to add, 'I've seen a lot of people agree with me' does not good evidence make. If anything it devalues whatever point you're trying to make, at least for me.

I've liked the blurbs.

They aren't supposed to be highbrow literature, just a snapsnot of something that character would say.

I feel like I can better imagine them talking to each other, and even what their attitude towards something might be based on the blurbs. Not to a huge degree, but it gives you a general idea. Take Sera's, for instance, it shows you she has some kind of moral code, but she seems quite flippant and has a sense of humour. Similar with Dorian's, but that he has a high opinion of himself too (unless it's tongue-in-cheek humour).

The quotes have not been great, but I'm not too concerned with it. It's just a small part of the marketing that likely very few people will ever see once the real ad campaign starts in the lead up to Oct 7th.

That said though I do think the biggest issue with the quotes is that they're trying too hard to encapsulate the characters and why we should like them with these lines, but there's so little context that they often fall flat or appear juvenile. Sure the quotes probably sound good in the context they are taken from and after we get to know the characters and hear the lines spoken they'll fit right in, but as they stand on a screenshot they're not very good. Other games like FFIX and Fallout NV have done something similar and more successfully and I think they did so because the lines they used weren't attempting to convey so much to the reader. They were interesting lines and/or more focused on broader themes and ideas, rather than attempts to convey their personality and get players to like them right off the bat.

I think these would have worked better if they were done in conjunction or after a character video which gave us a better idea of the companions in action, then lifting these lines from the video or new ones so we would have that foreknowledge of them to better interpret these lines.

I think Varric's, Dorian's and even Cole's were pretty good.

I didn't like Iron Bulls or Sera's... but it's likely because I dislike that kind of: "Killing is way cool." character.

I don't recall what others there were.

My personal opinion is that a great one liner could do wonders for a character - while a bad one liner does almost nothing based on the idea that one would just decide to choose to wait for the character in game.

They are okay. I'm more surprised people liked the Final Fantasy IX quotes. Different tastes and all that.

Funny how the Cole quote is basically just Vivi and Zidane combined, though.

I still haven't figured out how the grammar is supposed to be working on Iron Bull's.

But then, Vega had grammar issues too. (Where is the Krogan? Where is the meat?)

I may be wrong, but I think it's possible to treat "the Krogan" as singular.

It hurts me to ask, but where's the grammar error in Iron Bull's blurb?

I like the blurbs. Short to the point. Informative without being spoilers. :)

I don't really care one way or another on the blurbs. The interviews with the writers were good in my opinion.

The blurbs are short, to the point, a tiny glimpse; the structure of the sentence is dialogue and gives a peak into their personality. Not much more to read into it than that...

I just want more videos like Freddie Prinze jr/Iron Bulls.

That's all I want.

Preferably 10-12 featuring just Dorian by himself.

Hopefully there'll be more character videos like DAO and Mass Effect. Overall, I am fine with the way they're doing things.

Apologies for the late reply, my 4 year old had a playdate!

Yes, I'm meaning the little quotes on the pictures.

Do you think it'd have been better if we simply teased Dorian and showed the picture, sans quote then?

I'm just asking because response, from my impression, has been mostly enthusiastic and positive.  Especially the interviews.

I honestly think you guys should've just stuck with the Character Kits imo.

I think it would have been better if it was just a picture......of Dorian....shirtless

This is fine, but at the same time I think the only thing that can really remedy some of this is the game itself.  Because, if we were to successfully hype the crap out of the game for you and it didn't satisfy you, you'll only get more upset.

But if you're already "on guard" so to speak, I think there's inherent challenges to marketing especially with lighter weight beats.  People that don't have a feeling of being burned are possibly the ones being more enthusiastic then?

The interviews and voice actor promos have been great, I think. From my experience it's the 2 paragraph character summaries that turn some people off.

Ditto, I also notice that some of the characters who have a "dryer" way of speaking usually end up with a better quote image.

They're pretty bad, I guess they're better than nothing, but I'd rather have a character trailer; to actually hear them and get some (good) lines.

And the whole "Character: The Noun!" shtick, I find them more humorous than informative.
