No banter while riding mounts... :(

On the positive having read this interview I am now totally rethinking my class options. I generally pick a stealthy rogue with lock picks for plot reasons, but if Cole can play that role (and by the sounds of things better than me) maybe I should play something else.

http://www.gameranx....onal-companion/

However I am really not convinced by this companion disappearing mount system... especially if they kill the banter during it. What this means is that if I want to go exploring I have to choose between being bored by the fact that I am moving slower but having entertaining banter to make traversing the distance worth it... or moving faster but then being less engaged by not having my companions voices in my ears.

Companion banter in the previous games has really added to things and made longer stretches of walking easier to deal with, kind of like the radio in fallout 3, it adds to the atmosphere... and part of me would now worry about turning mounts on for fear of missing some cool observation when my team enters a new area.

I understand having them on extra mounts might be difficult in terms of physical space... but even if you cant visually show them, I would at least like to be able to hear them without having to sacrifice travel speed for diologue.

I'll only use mounts in areas where I've already extensively explored and do all my exploration on foot.  That should get most of the banter.

Maybe. But if I go back to an area I have been before I would be tempted to bring other companions to see what they can do/say about the area.

It has been suggested that banter may not happen in areas where you can use a mount. That is to say that the game will only trigger banter in specific situations where you are most likely not using a mount, thus ensuring you don't miss any.

Whether or not it is the case is anybody's case. Either way, I've decided not to use mounts too often. I managed in Skyrim and I'm sure DA:I's world won't be more expansive than that.

Most likely I will only use the mounts if they are needed to reach a certain area or if I have exhausted the banter in an area. Or if I get tired of seeing the same place over and over again, I'll use a mount, but I like exploring over all, so I'll probably walk most of the time.

I walked almost all of skyrim so i can manage Thedas.  If I need to quickly get from point A to point B after walking the whole world, turning over every rock to see if there are torn trousers or moldy scarves underneath then I'll use a critter.

I am hearing what people are saying (and I will probably do the same), but it seems like a waste of perfectly awesome mounts that the team has spent a long time developing to feel like you can't use them for the fear of missing something. Unlike Skyrim these mounts aren't just horses but seem varied and awesome so they should feel like a 5th member of your party not something that is counter to you having a party.

If it is difficult in terms of physical space it sounds like the last gen consoles may be a part of the reason as to why they couldn't make it work.

I also doubt mounts are only usable in select few areas where there is no party banter. That kind of solution just make no sense to me. All zones are decent in size and thus it makes sense you can use a mount almost everywhere you want to go. How would the developers even explain you can't mount up in certain areas only because it can trigger party banter? I just can't see this happen.

Anyway, with companions disappearing I see no use in using a mount, unless I am absolutely forced to do so, which I can see happen with the saving the village and keep scenario. I much rather don't use a mount at all though, not the way it currently works. For me a mount is a wasted feature the way it is implemented currently.

I certainly will use mounts at one point in-game. However, I decided to go full walking exploration on my first playthrough(unless I'm forced to use it ofc). When I have an area to explore, I like to take my time to immerse myself in the ambiance offered. It's even better when I stumble across locations with plenty of spots with elements to loot. I just want to maximize the experience as much as I can and for sure will go through the same places multiple times.

So yes, I'll use them. Just not from the very beginning.

Guys, have a LITTLE faith in the devs?

Knowing that banter is a big deal, do you really think they would build the game to exclude it?

Remember, banter is keyed to trigger at specific locations. It's quite likely that you can't be mounted in those locations anyway, or at least are close enough to points of interest that you are unlikely to be mounted at that spot.

I seriously doubt they would say, "Here's a long boring stretch of terrain, in which 99% of people will be mounted to ride through. Perfect spot for banter that no one will hear."

I'm sure the banter will become repetitive at some point, there aren't infinite lines of dialogue.  Once I'm satisfied I've heard them all I'll probably use my mounts much more frequently.

I like to walk in open world games, so I can search every nook and cranny, and pick every single flower, mushroom, etc. I would feel like I was shorting myself by blazing through any area that I could be thoroughly exploring.

Even with Shadowmere in Skyrim, I only used him (her?) very infrequently. Frost kind of ruined horses for me. And so, I walk.

This will give my femQuiz and her followers more chances to chit chat, methinks.

I'll walk 99% of the time .
And I guess use fast travel , I'd rather use mounts , but companions vanishing is a big no no.

In DA2 , the couple of times I walked around Kirkwall without companions,it felt strange ...but I did it for RP reasons.(mostly when you go visit companions to chat at their home base.)

The whole thing is way too immersion breaking for me.

I don't even care about missing some banters.

I hope they are going to look into ways to improve this for future games.

For now I'm seeing mounts as useless.

And I hope I won't be forced into some cutscene with my pc riding and my crew suddenly disappearing.

It would have to depend on how big the environments really are, how much I like my mount, and how much I've explored an area.

And if quests have time limits.

Unrelated to the question, but is there any information about racial restrictions for mounts.  I ask because I can only imagine the red hart's back snapping under the weight of a heavily armored Qunari.

Walk every wear at first but then use mounts to get places I've previously explored quicker (then again, there's fast travel) and just to reach my destination faster.

Wow, that's very disappointing. I agree with Reznore57 that the disappearing alone is totally immersion breaking. Missing the banter just makes the matter worse.

Seriously though, I've walked everywhere before, I don't mind it now. Even in the larger open world games like the Elder Scrolls, I've walked. It's not really a problem. If banter is provided then walking will have its benefits. I think the mount system is there just as a means to get to places you've been before quicker.
