BTW didn't I just start this thread? Why is it saying someone else started it? This is weird. It's still my forum title and everything. :/
The thread was possibly merged with another.

I didn't even know threads could be merged like that. Wild. Now I have the same post in two threads.
I didn't know that either ![]()
What I don't understand now is why I was given a warning about it? Did I do something wrong for starting a new thread?

Skyrim does have mounted combat.
Skyrim didn't launch with either companions riding mounts (they just ran behind you on foot) nor mounted combat (that came in a dlc).
Both of these things Modders did on their own with the creation kit, some were done fairly quickly and easily.

I prefer to walk / jog.
Even in Skyrim, all my characters walked / jog.
I never liked using horses. I prefer using mechanical vehicles. Organic ones, they are a bit off for me. I prefer to let animals roam free and do what they want to do.
I am a long distance / endurance runner so I can run, walk and jog for a long time. So when I roleplay, I justify the idea of me not using horses with this.

I used to ride horses (English seat). It would be easy to banter if you're just moving along at a walk, but the posting trot would make discussion rather interesting... And once you're cantering or galloping, forget about casual conversation. It actually makes sense to me that banter won't happen when we're mounted, because if we're mounted, we're probably pushing our mounts to move rather faster than a walk.

I've never been one for talking while being mounted tbh, spoils the mood

I understand the reasons why...but I have to admit I was a little sad when I found out about this. Not mad or anything. Just a little sad.

Being stuffed into saddle bags doesn't exactly encourage conversation.

Pre-order canceled.
Who am I kidding? I'd never pre-order a BioWare game.

Mounts are probably for vast open areas that don't have banter trigger points anyway.

I really thought the devs could contrive a way to include the companions on horseback too. Like while moving they would show a camera view directly behind the PC with no other party members visible. But if you stopped and panned around the other party members would be depicted mounted behind you, just for the effect. And while moving again you would hear multiple hoof beats and banter even though the camera is directly behind the PC. A shame that a believable solution like this couldn't be devised so it doesn't seem like the PC is alone on horseback.

I was actually really disappointed by this news. I understand there may be technical limitations (what with "path finding" and all that) but I thought it would be neat if all of the companions could have mounts. I was already envisioning Varric riding the nug-bronto hybrid mount that's been mentioned...
If it's not possible for companions to ride their own mounts, they should at LEAST include party banter so I can pretend as though they're riding right behind me... but if it's just silence, I can't picture myself using mounts much at all. I'd rather just run everywhere. :\

I suppose you'll just have to dismount once you figure out where the triggers are located for party banter. It would be a complete waste if you all decided to just walk everywhere when DA brought in mounts. And they didn't just bring mounts. The BROUGHT MOUNTS. I don't know any other single player fantasy RPG that has such a variety of mounts available. I mean, we have Horses, Armored Horses, Elk, Nugalos (That's not the official name. It's a cross between a nug and a water buffalo), Big Lizard Creatures (I suspect it might be a Wyvern, but I'm not 100% certain), undead horses with swords sticking out of their heads, and more.
I would like it if they enabled party banter while on your mount, even though your party disappears, but I'd be fine if they didn't.

xRogueSlayerx it would seem that yours and my threads have merged which is probably a good thing in that they are on the same topic. Although I did like my initial title "to mount or not to mount." :-). I think at this late stage it would be very hard to show companions on mounts. While yes, companions do come in similar sizes to all the PC options they are different and particularly allowing them to move on the mounts regardless of what armour they are wearing would take some time.
I do think that having the voices does greatly add to the story though and the believability is no less than the believabilty that your companions just suddenly appear and disappear every time you get on and off a horse.

What I don't get, in regards to pathfinding, couldn't they simply do quick old school /follow pahtfinding where the party members simply ride in a line and follow exactly where hte player goes? This is a quicker and easier way to do pathfinding and one of the ways old school mmo's did it (like Everquest) and DAOC, etc.
Just have the parrty members arrange in a straight line behind the player and limit them by "X" distance each (so none of them are sitting on top of the player or another party member) then just have them move when the player does and follow directly the pathing that the player takes himself.
