David Gaider: Dorian is gay—he is, in fact, the first fully gay character I've had the opportunity to write. It added an interesting dimension to his back story, considering he comes from a place where "perfection" is the face that every mage puts on and anything that smacks of deviancy is shameful and meant to be hidden. Dorian's refusal to play along with that façade is seen as stubborn and pointless by his family, which has contributed to his status as a pariah.

He does sound like a merry fellow. Why would Tevinters care for that, I wonder?

This is pretty much already being discussed in the Dorian thread unless you just want a place to discuss this exclusively?

Awesome but im kind of confused I thought no one in the dragon age universe gave a crap if you where gay. But now it seems like its making Dorian an out cast or am I just reading this wrong? or is tevinter just weird like that :P

So homosexuality is taboo in Tevinter? I wouldn't have expected that considering the supposed backstory of Danarius.

Apparently, slaves are A-OK. Serious suitors, not so much.

Ferelden and the other nations don't because they are the good guys and you are supposed to be rooting for them so they are shown to have more progressive attitudes to women and gay people and whatnot. Tevinter are the bad guys so they need to represent everything you hate like slavery, puppy killing and conservative views on things like homosexuality in order to make it clear who the good guys are and who the bad guys are.

Yeah I double checked World of Thedas and apparently it's "considered selfish and deviant behavior among nobles but actively encouraged with favored slaves." But also "Nowhere is it forbidden,"

Oooooh I guess that makes sense.

What if Dorian does not even "gasp" own slaves?

Can you imagine the scandal?

This is what the World of Thedas has to say on the subject (p. 72):

The view on indulging lusts with a member of the same gender varies from land to land. In Orlais, it is considered a quirk of character and nothing more. In Ferelden, it is a matter of scandal if done indiscreetly but otherwise nothing noteworthy. In Tevinter, it is considered selfish and deviant behavior among nobles, but actively encouraged with favored slaves. Nowhere is it forbidden, and sex of any kind is only considered worthy of judgment when taken to awful excess or performed in the public eye.

I don't think likening Tevinter attitudes towards sexuality to modern conservatives is exactly accurate.

Edit: now my post is redundant because someone said the exact thing as I was typing hehe.

I bet they're shooting for 2/2/2 in regards to love interests and sexualities, assuming Dorian is a LI at all. But then I'm only basing this on the fact that we have a gay male and a gay female announced so far, and I'm willing to put money on the other two announced love interests (Cassandra and Cullen) being straight. Iron Bull and Scribbles for bisexual?
