If that was the case, people might hate everyone but Garrus and Varric.
And they do, pretty much. Of course, different people hate different companions, depending on their preferred playstyle.

As I pointed out though (some earlier in this thread), these characters are meant to be loved or hated. Gaider himself admits the faults of Alistair -- because he purposely put them there. He went so far as to call him a dense man child and an assh*le. lol. What he doesn't want is for characters to be ignored. That's worse than hate.
People don't like companions that have cheek to disagree with the almighty PC.
People don't like companions who want you to think like them rather than discuss.
The warden's responses don't help, I might have liked Wynne more if I was able to have a proper discussion with her. Especially during the Zevran romance "talk".
You can disagree with Morrigan too and she disapproves, but she doesn't come off as she's trying to force you. She can leave you in the middle of your mission, but she made it clear she was there for her own agenda from the start. She never swears any oath or preaches about honor and loyalty. You can disagree with Sten and still become friends. He respects you even if you're a mage woman, which is near impossible for a qunari. He only dislikes you if he thinks you're weak and a coward. They seemed less hypocritical to me.

I've never seen much sign that the ability to have a discussion has much impact, if the companion continues to disagree at the end.

I think it does. People with different opinions can get along and respect each other. My Warden wasn't too sure about the qun, but she respected Sten. With Wynne I felt like talking to a Jehovah witness.

Funnily, I didn't feel this way about Alistair until I made a Dalish warden. I was more in sync before that. I bought more into the whole Warden ideal, liked Duncan more when I was a Human Noble. For various (maybe subtle) reasons, the Dalish changed things for me.
Hell, I could've been happy with a whole game being Dalish and doing entirely different quests. And it wasn't about the Blight at all. It was the first time I felt like I was being taken away from something good. And to have this other character who wants you to basically be his clone and have the same emotions about everything got annoying.

This.
How do they dare to give advise or critisize actions of the PC? The PC with teenager-like mind aka Dont-tell-me-what-to-do-you're-not-my-mom will show them who is the boss!
And who is an immature brat as well...

Oh come on. I think we're all having a pretty good discussion on it. On both sides. It doesn't have to be so simplified now.
I wish I was an immature brat myself. I just turned 37 yesterday. ![]()

Nah. I can't stand those players who get pissy when characters challenge their opinions and views. Unless they advize something truly immoral. Argue with me, spit in my face, fight me, hate me but do not submit to my opinion just like that. And even if we do agree, be yourself and not some pathetic sidekick. That's probably why I adore Carver yet can't stand Bethany. Show some personality, gurl
Oh, don't worry mental age doesn't always fit the biological one ![]()

I thought you were an idealist. Greater good and all that. Boiling people down to caricatures is an injustice. It's dehumanizing, you know. To quote Alistair, you're hurting my feelings. All one of them ![]()
I think it might've helped DAO if there had been more dissenting opinions among the whole squad. No one gets to voice these sort of opinions except the PC. Until Loghain later on at least. Who else is going to disagree with Alistair except the player? It's not like DA2 where you had more debates and representative viewpoints among the crew.
Honestly? I think its mostly that as the scope of our lives expand and our everyday begins to encompass a more global set of cultural norms, we are more open to questioning what it is, exactly, that defines a person's "goodness". As our global society grows, we find more and more that a traditionally Western set of morals is not only not the be-all-end-all of what a "good guy" can be, it is often actually a rather narrow and undesirable state of being. *snip*
The last time I heard stuff like that was in a very bad place. That is an example of something called "the thin end of the wedge". Hmmmm....

Fighting ignorance and teenager-like mentality is the greater good, since it's they who generalize characters down to caricatures just because somebody doesn't listen to the almighty PC and has a diffirent point of view. Besides, not all of them are even humans, you can't dehumanize non-humans
you can only deelf, dedwarf or dequnari them in DA
You mean "I HATE MAGES/TEMPLARS/HUMANS/QUNARI/EVERYONEBUTME!" kind of opinions? Please, no. I've had enough of this **** in DA2, I'm done with Anderses, Fenrises, Avelines and Isabellas. If you want companions disagreeing with each other without turning the party into a circus, go to DA:O with hilarious Sten and Oghren, or Sten and Wynne, or Zevran and Wynne and Wynne and Alistair and Morrigan banters. You know, where people had diffirent opinions without turning it into a war. And, well, PC not being forced into choosing one side instead of being more or less neutral

So I picked a different dialogue in a game, and share it on a forum. And now you're fighting ignorance?
I appreciate your passion for the game (it's better talking to you than someone who hates Bioware or Dragon Age, after all), but I wish you'd chill out. Have fun with this. This conversation was going pretty good. It won't get better if you just simplify people and exaggerate their maturity levels. This is how threads go bad.
To be fair, I get annoyed at Morrigan disapproving everything I do - we're going to have to kill all these zombies some time, why shouldn't we do it when there's still some live people to help us? But it's perhaps easier to brush off criticism from the, shall we say, less morally upright companions, because it doesn't come across as a judgement on your moral character.

NOOO! More dissenting opinions simply means more hassle or stress. Real life is hassle enough thanks.
No, I don't need NPC's to be mindless drones. It's fine for Justice or Sigrun to disagree with my choice regarding the Architect. But general dissent? I'm married, there's not a game in the world that would get even close anyway.

Hating other people (especially elders) for "preaching" is ignorance. The ignorance which has a hint of teenager-like mentality with all the "I hate adults!" "I know better than them!" "How they dare to tell me how to live?!". Doube ignorance, you see. If Wynne was contantly critisizing the PC or forcing them into doing something inappropriate I would agree. But don't be surprised if people frown at you for kicking puppies, stealing food from orphans or being in general selfish mean jerks cuz, well, jerks deserve it
Oh, but it's also how thread go fun ![]()

I like you Mr Magic, we've disagreed on things, but you're always very respectful in your interactions with others I find.
Happy belated birthday (I'm still older than you

I'm not doing any of these things. I've stated right at the beginning that I like Wynne and Alistair's morality. Other posters might have a different moral view, but as for me, I don't disagree with them on a whole lot. It's the idealism of the Wardens I don't like. It has nothing to do with disagreeing with them for being "goody" characters.

Then what are you arguing about?
I'm critisizing folk who gets angry becauze Wynne dares to disagree with their selfish or amoral decisions and call her preachy for it. If you don't have a problem with Wynne behaviour and opinion, then I don't have a problem with you

lol.. I would ask you the same question. What are you arguing about?
My first post here set out most of my views on this. If we don't actually disagree here, cool.

Fair enough. If you're mostly talking about moral disagreements, then I'm with you. No kicking puppies here. Don't worry ![]()

Oh irony that you try tell that players who hate peoples for disagreeing are ignorant for not liking old lady that hate you if you don't act way she wants...
