The Vivienne Thread - more than just parlor tricks

To those who are asking why she couldn't be a romance: play the game. You'll see why. Her companion quest line shows why. She was never intended to be a romance option. They had a different story to tell with her. Would I have liked her to be an option? Sure. Am I thrilled with her story despite that? Absolutely.

Vivienne loves me in my first playthrough, which is very unexpected. I allied with the mages, even, but I guess we just get along pretty well otherwise. Taking her, Cole, and Bull in the party provides some amusing banters.

I HATE VIVIENNE. (Why is is she in the Inquisition again?) She is too stupid, and self absorbed for me, and cowardish. She is very delusional to add to that. "Restore the circle of magi"..lol Yah, OK

Stupid... yeah no. Someone who is stupid I'd would not have mastered the game the way she has. She is a member of the Orlaisian courthe which is difficult for a noble let alone a bloody mage with no noble background.I HATE VIVIENNE. (Why is is she in the Inquisition again?) A coward seriously what game are you playing and where can I not buy it; she is more than willing to join the Inquisitor on the front lines even though she could have easily stayed in Orlais as the Inqusition's ambassador.
Self absorbed maybe a little, but that's just her and if you had bothered to get to know her any you would know she does care about helping others and has people she cares about in fact her whole reason for wanting the mages in circles is because she believes they pose a threat to the common man.
To answer your question the only reason she's in YOUR Inqusition is because you allowed her to be. She makes her opinions and ideals clear from the get go so you've got no one to blame, but yourself.

This reminds me of one of her first banters with Bull. They talk about how the Qunari keep mages on leashes and she said something like, "My dear, leashes can be pulled from both ends!" or something equally idiotic. Like, okay, Viv, try manipulating some Qunari handlers with your lips sewn shut. I would love to see you put your mind to that.
Does anyone have this recorded specifically? Was it less bad than I remembered? It was one of the many things that kind of made me kind of despise her in the beginning.
I do agree with her about

So I made a big decision which gave me a greatly dissaproves hit with Vivienne. I was worried she'd be angry with me but instead she talks about taking certain safety actions relating to the decision (not giving too much details because spoileriffic) and how I am an amazing friend and great leader and more. I can't help but be so moved by how deep our friendship is that even when I do things she doesn't like, she's there for me. Damn Bioware. You done good.

I knew that I would love to hate Vivienne even before the game was out, and my expectation has been fully meet.
I think she is the most beautiful and best written female character in the game.
Even though my character as well as I personally disagree with her on just about everything and loathe her arrogance, she just fills that part of arrogant b!tch to boot. You can just see how much fun the writers had with her.
I've been pairing her with Dorian a lot, and those two are just lovely together. "We're having a perfectly civilized conversation."
Also, she has one quote that will definately go into my repertoire of quotes to be used often on the forum, whenever somebody whines how the game does not cater to their personal unique preference: "Try not to cry in public, my dear. It is ever so demeaning."

I hate her. She is ugly, self centered and narrow minded. For now worst character that Bioware ever created.

I'm happy and content to have Vivienne as the Divine, with conscripted mages in the Inquisition.

Well, she doesn't mention that she'd aligned with the templars and started attacking the rebellion. And I know that, despite her claim, it wasn't somehow necessary, because Redcliffe contains plenty of mages who didn't support the rebellion but stuck around anyway.
Anyway, Vivienne hates me. Which I'm fine with.

You know...I've seen this multiple times but where does this "she's arrogant/she's a know it all" come from?
When you ask her what life is like in the circle, she EXPLICITLY tells you that each circle is different and even for mages in the SAME circle, they experience it differently. This is an arrogant person?
She doesn't say "oh my life experience is how every cirlce mage experiences life". She points out that even the much loved dalish use some form of control (excess mages that can't be placed in another clan are forced to leave their clan and be nomads). She acknowledges that some mages have grievances but takes issue twith the fact that they launch a rebellion AFTER a mage killed so many in a terrorist attack.
Where is this "she's an arrogant know it all" idea come from since the game itself doesn't have her say aything arrogant IMO.

She's arrogant not for her opinion on the circles, but for her opinion about other people who are less noble, less versed in Orlesian politics, less powerful, less suave, less rich, less Orlesian.
Listen to her remarks towards Sera. This has nothing to do with any mage/circle stuff, but with the fact that Sera is a low-life, street urchin with a pottymouth and a horrific sense of fashion.

It's because Vivienne doesn't fit the "Oppressed Mage" image that so many painted all the Circle Mages as, so now she's the problem.
What I find funny though is Dorian is arguably the most blatantly arrogant member of the party but you don't see anyone bashing him for it.

Couldn't agree more!
As I said: My character dislikes her, as a person, I wouldn't like her very much, as a fictional character, she is awesome and makes the game so much richer.
Among all the random goody2shoes (I found Blackwall very boring so far), she really stands out!

His arrogance is different: He is "I am great", while Vivienne is "I am great and you are not". Vivienne is purposely condescending, towards everybody.
I like both of them in my party, and their banter is boss.

Vivienne was one of my pre-favorite, and she lived up to the reasons why she was. "I always have time for you, my dear," -Vivienne. Now back to play my unfinished game

I really thought I would love her. I do truly enjoy the ice queen personality, and I jumped on her fanwagon since so many people had a preconceived hate for her. And her trailer got me so pumped!!
But, needless to say I'm a bit disappointed with her. My Lavellan is very pro making choices for yourself, and giving second chances. Something that Vivienne seems to be against. I don't think her approval is so low she hates me (I did get her snow white side quest) but there's barely any interesting dialogue between us. At all.
Also, most of the b****y characters in these games show that they have a warm side if you get to know them. Morrigan called my Amell her sister! I just don't get any redeeming qualities from Madame de Fer
Hmm. Maybe my second or third play through will have better luck with her. I'm planning on eventually making a Trevelyan mage who had felt comfortable in her Circle (my eventual Cullen romancer). I hated Isabela my first go at Dragon Age (she ran and never turned back) but after listening to some banters online and trying another play through I began to really appreciate her and the depth to her character.

Her opinion on mages and the circle pretty much reflects my own so I don't have a problem with her, I do have a problem with her class elitism.
Mages are dangerous ;( and they need the proper education and support to understand the fire they are playing with. I disagree with the way the Chantry has been treating them but I do agree they still need the support system and the reformed Templars are also needed to keep stuff under control since they're the only real thing that can shut a mage down efficiently.
Education is the key and that's what Vivienne supports, including their freedom - Which is Cullen's opinion as well and what he also supports. If you bother to think outside the box and really step back on what it is to be a mage - it's fine to want freedom, but if you can set fire to an entire village with a simple thought, you still need the education and tools to protect yourself and the non-mages.
Vivienne for the divine 10/10, would play again.

Man, I feel like Vivi is seriously plotting to kill my Inquisitor. Just turned down the quest about the dragon heart and she was not pleased, her words cut deep.
Haha. I don't have the guts to say no to her.
