Vivienne is not dangerous at all.

Play the Game with her , she's powerless and she knows it.

Tell her what she wants to hear , and do your thing on the side.

 

She loved me and I was mostly pro mage freedom.

It's not her views on the circle that I find objectionable, though I'm not fond of the hypocrisy that factors into them. I do, by and large, agree with her in that regard.

 

It's simply her personality I can't stand. The haughtiness, the arrogance, the snobbishness, the ignorance, the bigotry. 

 

She is a complex, well written, and interesting character. But I don't find her to be a likable one.

That's a bit vague.  I did alot.

Recruited the mages.  Recruited the Wardens.  Left Hawke to rot in the Fade.  Allowed Morrigan to drink from the Well of Souls.  I think that those are the major quest decisions, right? 

 

Like I said, I openly told Leliana that I didn't support her as Divine.  I also told Vivienne that I didn't support Leliana and she loved that.  I never brought up the "Maybe you should be Divine" dialogue with Vivienne because I knew she'd get mad at me if I rejected her.  I told Cassandra I supported her. 

 

I did all of  the companion quests:  Gave Blackwall to the Wardens.  Convinced Cole to be 'less human'.  Rejected the Qunari alliance.  Supported Dorian, Varric, Cassandra, Solas, Sera, and Vivienne on their personal quests. 

 

Mostly agreed with Josephine and Cullen (surprisingly) with my War Table missions.

Vivienne's a horrible person but I still love her as a character. The relentless vitriol she spews (coated in a sugar sweet manner) towards practically everyone in the party doesn't exactly endear her to me but I just love her absolute self-confidence. In real life, I find many of her personality traits abhorrent but she just entertains me for some reason. She's so well-written and you can just see how much fun the writers had with her dialogue.

Heck, my Inquisitor hated her for the longest time but they seem to be on good terms now (I get the pleasant-sounding "Can I help you, darling?" instead of the haughty "Yes?"), which is probably the best I can hope for in this playthrough given the endless "Vivienne greatly disapproves" notifications I'd been getting.

I think it's just story-gated. (I got it after Halamshiral, but I'd done the Warden quest beforehand, too) I'm not sure if we were friends when I got it (we weren't by the end of the game and she hated me for a while), and I've heard about Inquisitors who Vivienne hated getting it.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong, of course.

Vivienne is a guilty pleasure

 

I should hate her for some of her put downs but her confidence and witty remarks are endearing (to me at least). I am also glad that she gives an alternative mage perspective that supports the Circle. Vivienne is one of the more interesting party members IMO.

I can't recall if I said it in here, but ultimately I ended up liking Vivienne despite my initial negative impression of her. We may have opposing positions, but I think she made some very valid points, and she and my Inquisitor are on relatively friendly terms, and I can respect her political acumen and intelligence. I also find her sharp-tongued barbs amusing most of the time.

I absolutely love Vivienne. 

I think that even if you hate her (and you have good reasons to), you have to admit she's an amazingly written character. 
One of Bioware's best characters, to be honest.

I just want to call her on her ****.  After siding with the Mage Rebellion she goes on this rant about caring about the mobs that would happen if the mages are given their freedom and the danger that would pose to mages everywhere.  But when we first meet her, she uses magic on a mundy to scare him.  If you are going to go on about humans fearing mages, then you should be actively trying to avoid frightening regular humans all the more.  Not abusing your maker given powers to torment and humiliate them.  Wish I could call her on her **** with my inquisitor instead of simply taking her hypocrisy.  If only she had more redeeming qualities I could actually appreciate her character.  As it is, I don't like her.

A little surprised by the negative reaction to Vivienne, I thought she was an interesting and well-written character. I also liked that her obligatory Defrosting Ice Queen arc didn't turn her into a completely different person but gave a little more insight as to her character and background. I'd like more background on her time in the circle and formative experiences which gave her the stance she has now (which I and my canon Inquisitor find at least a bit more agreeable than those closer to the "Anders" end of the spectrum).

Also just love her entrance   My first playthrough, I played as a ruthless/aggressive personality, and ordered her to kill the man. I wasn't expecting her to go all FFX Shiva on the dude and Diamond Dust him on the spot   Second playthrough, played a more whimsical/humorous personality, told her I didn't care what she did with him. The verbal lashing she gave him was arguably just as brutal.

I have just completed Vivienne's personal quest with a high approval rating and WOW. I have decided that Vivienne is the best character out of all the games so far. The quest shows you a different side to her and shows how well written the character is (I have a huge amount of respect for Mary Kirby ). I liked Vivienne before the quest but now I love the character. Vivienne is the first mage party member who I support and agree with.

 

I have seen in other threads that some people hate her but this is again testament to how good the writing is. Hating a character is better than indifference.  

 

Anyway, I am still loving her barbed tongue and I expect to still like her by the end (as I haven't finished yet).

Agreed. I think in our first conversation at Haven, she said some entirely sensible things about why ending the civil war(s) wracking southern Thedas was a good thing to do, but this didn't no much to mitigate the poor impression she would leave on me before and after that conversation. I did like some of her banter with characters, particularly Cole. (and not just the ones where he made her feel insecure)

I have to say, her personal quest did not move me much. (at that point, I only had mediocre approval with her. she hated my Inquisitor earlier, though) Especially the scene later where her relatives visit Skyhold. At that point, I was just being diplomatic so I don't know how she would have responded to a critical Inquisitor. Now that I know her quest isn't approval locked, though, I probably won't be making any efforts to win her approval in future games. We'll mutually despise each other all the way to the bank... where we store experience and power gains from companion sidequests. (poor metaphor, I suppose)

 

I disagree that creating a character people despise is necessarily a sign that they're well-written. Not saying that Vivienne isn't. (Sera, on the other hand... not the thread)

I'd love to give Viv a fair shake but she seems all kinds of glitched for me. Her banter has never fired off with anyone in 110 hours and worse still I don't think I've gotten a cutscene with her since her recruitment despite checking up on her often and having already completed the narrative up through to the end of Here Lies the Abyss (haven't done Wicked Eyes, Wicked Hearts yet though).

I'll just keep trying, I guess.

I haven't got to this point yet but I know you can support Vivienne in becoming the next divine. I love Vivienne as a character but I am conflicted in whether to choose her as the next divine. My view is that the status quo should be restored with the Chantry at the head and mages in the circle (So Vivienne does feel the natural choice).

 

Pros:

- Personal bias because I love the character.

- Circle restored, Templars restored, chantry restored (which fits my views)

- Strong willed, intelligent and capable leader (as she was involved in Orlesian politics)

- She has an understanding of circle life and would serve as a connection (and perhaps later even inspiration) for the mages and the faithful.

 

Cons:

- Main problem for me is she is a mage and a mage as a divine is unsettling.

- Vivienne is against demons but she may get tempted later down the line (especially by a Pride Demon). Then a demon could theoretically be in charge of the Chantry. I know this is highly unlikely but it is a possibility.

- Also giving Vivienne the power to declare an exalted march is a frightening thought. (although I would support it against Tevinter )

- Not being able to select Vivienne in future DLC (as the divine shouldn't be gallivanting around the wilderness)

 

So at the moment I am not sure (but I am leaning towards supporting her as divine). Has anyone else got any thoughts?

Is this where we pretend the noble wasn't trying to start a duel to the death at a party she was hosting? Simply describing it as using magic to scare him is misrepresenting the situation; especially since she'll only kill him if you demand it.

The main thing I'm currently getting from Vivienne is that she thinks mages need to be smart about how they choose their battles. Not that they must always be docile.

I also don't know who to support for Divine, even though I lean towards Vivienne. 

I think she's a good option because she suports the circle (as I do), but at the same time it's stated that she gives mages a great deal of freedom and responsability. I think the main problem with supporting Viv is that even though the new Templar order she creates is pretty tame compared to the old one, all the power is firmly tied to her hands only. So I fear that once she dies, the templars will be free to abuse mages again, like before. 

I like Leliana as an option as well. But I think giving the mages full autonomy is too radical, they need a place to learn to develop their abilities. And I don't know about Cassandra.
