Very glad to see this thread resurface.

Can we talk about Vivienne finally getting her pre-release hat? Looked fierce as hell tearing down Qunari. I didn't leave her in the Divine armor, not having her statement silks twirling around her in combat just didn't feel right.

What do you mean? The two hats we saw her in pre-release were in the base game, iirc?

I'll try to be objective about this question: when should I ever trust Vivienne? She's always playing the Game, and as Cassandra says, "That one wastes no words;" everything she says has an agenda behind it, and lies and manipulation are everything to an Orlesian power player. It's virtually impossible to tell, based on this, if she's ever being genuine.

Although she is lovely to look at, Vivienne is too much of a matronly figure in-game to consider romancing.

I really want to have a relationship with her I want to have an opportunity to get to know her better, because I want to know about her life before the circle, what hardships she have to endure, and why is she's dedicated to the circle. But it seems that BW don't want no one to have a relationship with her (very obvious of you BioWare  ) I was wondering if a relationship would heal her sadness of what she's gone through but maybe in the next game....

She has no life before the Circle. Like all mages her magic ability manifested itself in her early childhood so the majority of her childhood was in a Circle.

She hasn't had to endure much hardship since she was a Duke's mistress and the Empress' arcane adviser.

She's dedicated to the Circle because it has been her life and she agrees that it is a needed institution.

Bioware didn't want no one to have a relationship with her since they made it so that she is in a relationship during the game.

Her relationship with Bastien has brought her a lot of happiness.

I doubt she'll appear next game in any big capacity since she can be the Divine.

Meh. I really liked her story with Bastien and how that's affected her. I understand why she wasn't a romance and I don't think she needed to be one.

But I want to hear it from her not hints and fragments of her life. Every woman tells you about their lives but her and it's unfair that you won't have a dynamic relationship like with Morrigan @ Origins. Its very odd to me how they write her to be hateful, and constantly being mean to anyone without knowing why she's that way. Typical......

Hateful? Hateful of who? And she's hardly "mean" to everyone

Also, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. "Every woman tells you about their lives?" You gotta be joking. She, as a character, doesn't have to automatically spill her guts simply because you aren't satisfied with what she has told you.

You're really reaching now.

I want to be with a black woman and I thought they would made her a romance option but they didn't, I never even get a chance to be with a black woman as a romance option ever in my gaming life. I want to really get to know her like with other women, but they chose not to and that's very typical of them.

You are aware that Isabela happens to share her ethnicity and nationality with Vivienne, as both women are from Rivain?

Go back and play DAO and DA2, because the option is there.

(And even if you don't romance her, go back and play DAO and DA2 anyway)

People already said this but in typical n7valentine logic apparently Isabela isn't a real black woman

I don't know if you'll see this since it's older, but can I ask why you really liked it? I loved Vivienne as a character but I was disappointed in her arc. I don't think it needed to be a romance arc to be meaningful at all (although I definitely would have romanced her if she was an option, lmao), but I felt like I was sort of left wondering "what was the point?" at the end. I don't know, I just wanted more out of her I guess. Not necessarily that she opens up more, but just...I didn't feel like I had any better understanding of her at the end of her quest than at the beginning. I appreciated her viewpoint and her dialogue, but her personal story felt very thin.

I don't think Vivienne is the type of person to open up fully, even to a close friend.

I liked her arc well enough, I just wish the snowy wyvern had been a bit tougher to fight.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't expect her arc to be about her pouring her heart out to you, so I wouldn't rewrite her quest exactly as it is except with her opening up more. I just felt like it wasn't that compelling, especially compared to the other companion arcs. Varric's wasn't that interesting either, but it at least expanded on a character we already knew instead of functioning as an introductory thing.

It's possible Mary's approach to writing characters just doesn't match my preferences. Outside of Loghain, I tend to think her characters (Merrill, Varric, Viv) are more fun than they are deep. So her dialogue works for me and I generally enjoy them and want to develop a relationship between my character and them, but I'm left kind of dissatisfied with their arcs. If that's the case, then, shrug. Other people enjoy it and I have other characters whose stories are more to my tastes.

Isabella is not a black woman and even if she is why do they have to make her a slutty/Jezebel stereotype of a over sexualized black woman? Plus she doesn't have African facial features and her hair supposed to be nappy not straight. BioWare obviously put black companions as sex symbols, like Jacob wearing a tightsuit looking like Chocolate Thunder. *sighs*

My regret is that we cna't selectively remove hats from our companions.

I would be happy to leave Madame de Fer with her glorious hats while everyone else went bare-headed.

Unfortunately with Vivienne, as with some other characters, you only get insights into her background if you take Cole around with you.   However, knowing how she viewed Cole I wasn't going to do this because I had enough of companions sniping one another in DA2.    Plus of course even if you did take them round, the dialogue just might not trigger.    I am hopeful that next game we return to the old idea of finding out about our companions by actually talking to them instead of some mind reading spirit spilling the beans whether they want to or not.

Also I think there are times in Trespasser when Vivienne is being genuinely concerned.   I think her words of caution to Dorian are those of someone who does care about what happens to him.   Likewise her concern over the Inquisitor and saying she and Dorian need to put their heads together and see if they can come up with something to help.   I don't think she is always playing the Game but it has taught her not to be too free with her emotions or revealing herself to other people because its conditioned her that way.   She also approved back at Haven if you succeed in rescuing all the people, which suggests she actually genuinely does care about ordinary people and their safety.

I don't really see Vivienne wearing that type of garb even if anything like it existed in Thedas and it really fit her character either.

Vivienne lives and breathes the courtly intrigue of Orlais and that is where the persona of "Madme de Fer" that she wears is most at home. She has to be pressed to even tell the Inquisitor that she was either born in the Marches to Rivaini parents, but she clearly does not consider herself either a Marcher nor Rivaini. It's probably fair to say that Vivienne considers Orlais far superior to either of those nations and may consider herself Orlesian more than anything else.
