This song really reminded me of Vivienne.  It's so elegant:

Do you know what would show everyone else what an awesome hunter I am? If I wore the skin of a fierce animal I had killed. I mean, I live in a region so warm that my species is losing its hairy covering to acclimate, but if stick this on I'm going to be an absolute badass.

The earliest clothing was likely worn for non-practical reasons because early humans adapted to hot weather, not cold.

Because clearly all early humans lived in warm climates. I wasn't guessing like you seem to be, animal skins sewn with bone needles is (pre)historical fact.

The theory is that we did though. Africa. Living on the move, sweating our asses off, and evolving without body hair. Then we migrated into colder Europe and Asia later.

There are many thoeries. Some archeological cites in Asia are more ancient than those in Africa

So, yeah, it's all very uncertain and confusing

Neanderthals had clothes, do you think it was to look pretty ?

I find it funny that we're debating anthropology in order to determine if "fashion" or necessity came first. :D

Anyways. I don't know much about neanderthals actually. So I'm not going to answer. That's only fair. I'd imagine it'd be necessity if they originated in colder areas.

Part of me really wants to go into my spiel about how Neanderthals are now considered to have been no less intelligent than time-equivalent humans and so it is perfectly possible to suggest that they had a concept of aesthetics. Some studies suggest that Neanderthals used black pigment for decoration, as well as making houses from mammoth-bones and creating tools. I believe there is a dig site in Africa where several painted skeletons were discovered, too, suggesting ancestor reverence.

Now I'll rein in that part

I think neanderthals were smart enough to build graves/have funerals. If they can do that, they can look glamorous too.

They may have personalized their furs but they wore them to keep warm. My problem with vivienne is that she thinks *only* fashion matters, that's stupid. But I have no issue with liking to improve the aesthetics of something practicality so long as the function comes before the looks. For exemple I like Metallica t-shirts, but I'd much prefer a bland shirt to going shirtless with a Metallica tattoo on my chest. You can like studs on your coat but if you go out in winter with just studs on your bare skin you're an idiot (or possibly a badass)

I think I saw that in Hellraiser.

I think it's far from stupid to think only fashion is important when you live and work in the Imperial court of Orlais, where one can be ruined just as easily for wearing the wrong clothes as for walking into a pit of hungry lions.

So I had this idea for one of those companion banter kind of things...

Though I'm not sure the initial part really works that well!

This is a valid point but in my eyes that doesn't make vivienne smart, it just makes all of orlais stupid :P

Orlais is frivolous. Definitely not my cup of tea. I don't know about stupid though. For some reason, they make it work. And built an empire.

Fair enough. But I definitely feel Vivienne is not originally Orlesian. She's come to Orlais and quickly seized the opportunities that presented themselves and has manipulated the Orlesian political system to become a powerful figure in the politics of some of the most powerful people in Thedas. And from a mage? From someone not born in Orlais? That's pretty impressive.

There's a whole lot of social climbing going on within the rigid social structure of Orlais. The majority of that climbing is lateral as a result, but it's been pretty common in societies across the globe for appearance and presentation to carry a very specific message, even down to the cut and colour. It makes the culture very complex and difficult to experience as an outsider, but it doesn't make them stupid. It just means that careful manipulation and attention to detail can get you a lot further than honour and honesty. It's not 'fair' or 'nice' in the eyes of many, but it's no less valid for that :)

Orlesian society working like this is what I find stupid. I'm a blunt and pragmatic person, acting nice to enemies and turning around the pot makes no sense to me.

Like Leliana said, it's a game meaningless to anyone but themselves.

Most of this stuff was originally posted by Eluvianus Ixious Rex, so thanks Eluvianus for being such a dedicated finder and poster of Viv art (and other viv related stuff).

And that makes her smart.

Also, love the OP post. <3

It might make her smart, but I just wonder if she's one of those people who washes off the makeup at night, looks at the mirror, and wonder if she's a sellout.

Her original position was to be some glorified court jester wasn't it?
