I like Orlais! With playing the game and dressing to gain the right keys to the door. Vivienne knows what she is doing, and anyone would do the same if they know it would help their reputation. People forget that they would do anything for their dream job, and how you dress can tell a lot about you as a person.

I think people want everyone to dress, and act like they were in Ferelden, but sorry we are going to a place that's all about the way you look and playing the game. Which is something I can't wait to get into. So, try putting yourself in Vivienne's shoes, a mage that's basically treated bad just cause of what they're born with. I can understand why someone would grow up, and be better than what the average person thinks of a mage, and I applaud Vivienne for becoming an important mage, not only

I don't think Orlais shouldn't be in the game or be like Ferelden, I just think their culture is stupid. They can dress all fancy if they wish, I want to keep my armor. I wouldn't put on a retarded impractical outfit for any reason. I don't want to play the game, if an enemy is a noble of orlais I want to just bash their door down and slaughter them right there, no messing around.

That's not entirely the point. While ambition isn't evil by itself, a great many acts of evil have been motivated by ambition... and Vivienne seems to have no fear of committing them, in addition to being painfully conservative.

A great many acts of evil have been motivated by good intentions too though and sometimes you need ambitious people to get things done.

I won't deny it... but Vivienne only seems to be accomplishing positive things by virtue of her association with the Inquisition.

Well nobody seems to be accomplishing anything much any other way. That's sort of the point, she still managed to worm her way into a powerful position at court which should be good for mages who support the circle at least.

I guess it all depends on what her intentions truly are, is she truly in it to help mages or just to help herself?

That's the whole point of diversity, and I'm glad that you feel that way. Since, I'm on the other side of you, well maybe not all the way on the other side. But, I do want to dive into the culture of Orlais, and not slaughter everyone with a Orlais accent. Let me ask you this. Would you feel the same, if Orlais was the main setting of Dragon Age Origins, and this game would had been our first time going to Ferelden?

That isn't true at all. I think you are letting your dislike for Vivienne blind the facts. Vivienne was about to become the first Enachanter, and then bam! The mages broke away from the circle starting the mages and Templars war. She is associating with the inquisition to restore balance and order. She was already an important person in Orlais, so she doesn't need to prove anything to anyone, which could be why she is so cocky.

Firstly, I don't want to kill all orlesians, I just said if I had an enemy in orlais I wouldn't play The Game against them, I'd just kill them directly. As for your second question, I don't prefer Ferelden because I visited it 1st, I prefer it because their culture is more compatible with me

It's hard for me to view 'their culture is stupid' and 'their clothing is retarded' as nuanced and intelligent opinions.

Orlais is the largest, most powerful, and most prosperous nation in Thedas, and has been for several centuries. It could easily be compared to America, the French Empire, or Rome, all nations in which citizens indulged in opulent displays of wealth.

DA:I will likely pander to your desire to run around in full armor because it's a game. Let's be honest though, you should be treated like crap and barred from any place where nobles gather if you refuse to dress like a noble.

One recalls a certain Prince's reaction to Turkish visitors appearing in his court and refusing to take off their turbans: he had the turbans nailed to the men's heads. Extreme, yes, but powerful members of societies that value status don't take kindly to outsiders flouting convention.

While you have a point, I'm not a noble, I'm an Inquisitor. And if these people both want my help at stopping the Breach and are able to accept the fact that I'm an elf, I suspect they can also accept my not being a fashionista.

I think it's a difference of perspective. Vivienne has clearly accomplished much with a role that was meant to be nothing. However, if you oppose the Chantry controlled Circles, you may not see Vivienne's past actions, or her apparent support for the Chantry controlled Circle, in a positive light. If the Inquisitor supports mage autonomy, or considers the Orlesian Empire a threat to the sovereignty of Ferelden or an independent Dales, then the player might see Vivienne as a potential opponent - depending on how she reacts (even if it's simply as a verbal sparring partner).

You're playing a dalish mage.

This is akin to a black man in 1778 kicking his way into the Capitol Building and going 'If you want to win the war, give me a bunch of money and soldiers' and the Founding Fathers thanking him for saving them instead of having him dragged into prison.

Which is fine, BioWare likes to give us massive power fantasies. But let's admit that this is what's happening. Those nobles want you to save them because BioWare is suspending the social norms of the fictional setting they've created just for the special snowflake that is the PC.

As I said earlier, I'm a blunt and pragmatic kind of person, overly elaborate impractical outfits and "the game" come off as meaningless and stupid to me because they're needlessly complicated. And I consider an outfit retarded if it's primary and possibly sole purpose is fancy aesthetics. Taking pride is dressing in impractical and uncomfortable ways is simply idiotic in my eyes. This personal directness and dislike of needless complexity is also why I tend to express myself with simple words.

Also, I doubt people like vivienne would dress in normal clothes if she came to Ferelden, so I don't see why I should make an effort for them. Besides you're the leader of a major faction, plus if previous DA games MCs are any indication, an extreme powerhouse by yourself, how exactly would they bar us out of anywhere ? With guards ?

Every faction, race, country and character by BW is made so we can have different opinions of them and act however we want towards them. You find Orlais interesting and you want to follow their rules that's fine. I don't.

Kicking? I'm fairly sure I was invited somewhere.

And don't worry. If I can somehow choose it myself, I've got my own fabulous Fen'Harel-themed outfit that may or may not pacify the nobility, because Orlesian fashion seems rather arcane.

You mean they'd let their country be destroyed by demons just because they don't like thhe Inquisitor's clothes ?

It would actually be fun if that hindered your ability to interact with nobility. I don't wanna be forced into clothing choices either but if it happens it happens.

I think she'll want to have strong words with you. Or someone.  Whoever propagates such baseless, crude rumours!

If I remember correctly, didn't David say something about nobility skills or am I wrong? If I am not, I think that skill will learned from Vivienne, and most likely will be able to use it against nobles, and even Vivienne herself. But, in the past games, you were able to influence companions, and we will probably be able to influence some changes with Vivienne. Don't expect her to be the same the whole game.

Would be interesting if you can turn her down. I doubt we will have that option with every companion.

Yeah him or laidlaw (I can't remember) said there were persuade skills and that one of them was about "understanding the nobility" Also humans will be naturally more skilled at this I think where as elves will be better with elves ect.
