PC's greatest advantage, which is being an open platform, is also it's greatest disadvantage. As PC gamers, we have no company to back us up, to draw third party developers to our side. We have exclusives too sure, but rarely are they games like God of War series, Infamous series, Halo series etc. We get screwed by developers like Bungie who spit on us by not releasing even a fully online game like Destiny while commenting by saying things like "we feel bad for PC players".
Then we have companies like Lionhead and Square Enix who want us to beg(petition) for their games to be released on PC. When they do release their games, half the time, it's sloppy ports that takes 2 titans to run the game at 50 FPS. You talk about PC being better because it has options and consoles don't, but that's only on the hardware side. Doesn't matter how amazing your PC hardware is if you don't have anything other than those damn MOBAs and MMOs to play.
Also, saying that games like The Order don't interest you is irrelevant. The fact stands that we have no access to certain games even though we can easily run them because Sony and Microsoft have made backdoor deals with their developers to make sure of it. And I believe this will continue to happen throughout the generation.
Meh, most of those AAA games are only AAA in terms of marketing. They are dumbed down, lowest common denominator, dribble meant to appeal to a broad, casual market.
I tend to stay away from such games.
Moreover, while you are completely right in that there is no $ony or Micro$oft to money-hat developers and to market and subsidize their hardware, that only shows the strength of the PC exclusive catalog, and the strength of the platform overall.
Think about it: When was the last time you saw a TV commercial about how awesome PC gaming is and how it's where "Greatness Awaits" or some such nonsense? Never, would be my guess. How about a TV commercial of a PC exclusive game? Heck, even multi-plat games will show a trailer, then either a big Sony logo at the end or a big Xbox one. Or they'll show both console retail boxes and you'll see a tiny little PC logo on the bottom right corner. EVEN PC exclusives that ARE featured in big marketing pushes like Diablo 3 or Star Craft 2 or the Sims, rarely even mention the platform of the game. They Just show a small logo at the end or some guy crams "PC/MAC!" breathlessly in the last .25 seconds of the trailer.
No one is paying to make PC hardware cheaper, no one pushes the platform in the market space, and no one money-hats developers into spending millions on PC exclusive games.
AND YET - PC gaming brought in more revenue than all consoles combined last year. The biggest, most popular games on the planet are PC EXCLUSIVES. The most talked about independent games last year were PC exclusives, or only available on PC first. There are over 80 million active Steam users, with an overall Steam install base of over 130 million, and other digital marketplaces are doing well too like battle.net, GOG and Origin.
Heck, most of the biggest publishers in the biz have PC exlcusive titles, while only a few have console exclusive ones, and they are all bought by MS or Sony or even Nintendo. Why would they do that, given that no one is paying them to do so? EA was TOR, Sim City and the Sims (no the console version is not the same game). Activision/Blizzard has SC, WOW. Ubisoft has The Might and Magic and Heroes of MM games as well as the Settlers, and a couple of others. Take 2 has of course Civ series, stronghold series and a few others.
PC gaming is huge, larger than any single console, inspite of not having a Sony or Microsoft, as you mentioned, behind it. I think that alone speaks to all the amazing ways this platform is better than consoles and always will be.
Because, no one would be talking about Xbox if it wasn't for the billions of dollars Microsoft has sunk into that brand.
