Just for a mad moment, what if Dragon Age Inquisition took a leaf out of Grand Theft Auto's play book and introduced mini-games?

Actually, Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs do it too, so here is a 'could have been' list:

Tavern games:

  • Drinking games
  • Poker (or whatever is popular in Ferelden or Orlais)

Town streets:

  • Steal a horse and evade the guard or reach a checkpoint before the horse is killed
  • Parkour: Run around town and rooftops (using jump ability)

Circle tower

  • Leap of faith into conveniently placed hay bales
  • Lyrium induced halucinations - combat imaginary demons while off your head

I'm sure the answer is no, actually I really hope the answer is no.

Nah. I like GTA, but I don't think it would mix with DA.

Minigames can be okay, but the problem with games like GTA and Assassin's Creed is that they tend to go for quantity over quality. Their worlds are full of little activities, but few of them are well polished and fun to play (at least more than once). If BioWare started adding minigames to Dragon Age I'd be worried they'd fall into the same trap; a lot of content that's hastily added in to say "hey, look how much we have", and that content feeling more like pointless busy work than something that's actually fun and adds something to the game.

I wouldn't mind a few card games here and there like in Red Dead, but that other stuff has no real place in Dragon Age.

They have hinted at Wicked Grace in Varric`s bio .  I think card games would OK , BW had Pazaak in KOTOR and it was an other way to money and have fun .

I'd be cool with a couple of card games. I always loved Pazaak in KOTOR, and I seem to be the only person who liked Caravan in New Vegas.

A sidequest where you collect Diamondback or Wicked Grace cards would be pretty neat.

I loved Caravan, the only problem I have with it is that it doesn't translate well to the real world like some of the other in-game card games. Best time to turn on Radio New Vegas was during Caravan games, "Big Iron" is still stuck in my head all these years later.

As a general response to the thread, I'm against things that seem overly gamey, especially in RPG's which are supposed to adhere to a stricture standard when it comes to suspending disbelief. An In-Universe Card game is one thing, but Giant Timers and horse races? I think those would have a harder time passing the test.

Echo me in as one who wouldn't mind mini-games, so long as they're in-universe/make sense.  Nothing like timed races, but some tavern games could be fun.  Also a fan of arena combat if they can make it fit into the lore properly (Fable, KotOR, Oblivion).

In part I threw this up because I was quite disappointed to find mini-games in Watch Dogs. I found them immersion breaking.

Yet there does seem to be a trend for packing games with a host of mini-games, fetch quests and collectible quests for which I blame Rockstar and Ubisoft.

I hope BioWare steer clear of these unless they are a genuine and appropriate tavern diversion.

The fade is eating the world.

This is not the time to be messing about for Lolz...

Seconded.  It can be really distracting to have open access to minigames at any moment, especially if they don't fit the series well.

FFVIII as Squall: "Oh no, nuclear missiles have been launched and all of the SEED schools are under attack!  We have to get to...oh hey , someone wants to play cards?  Sure, I have a minute."

Me: You're...serious.  And I have to reload because I didn't realize that was the Queen of Cards I just talked to.  You mother--<grumble grumble>

Well as long as the minigames are optional, so not like in Mass Effect 1 and 2...

I liked the gambling in Fallout New Vegas (though I never did get the hang of Caravan). But I never played the Assassin's Creed mini games more than a couple of times. Plus the world's about to end, right? I have to fix up my keep and romance my chosen LI and collect all the Elfroot and uh... close some Fade rifts? No time for checkers.

Only if they were lore appropiate or like the dice games in the Witcher .... I wouldnt mind a horse race but without timers and a minimap etc.

I think something like card games could be worked into it.

The rest not so much.  Unless it was part of a meta-humour DLC package - that could work, just not within the main game (and I suppose that would make it more Saint's Row-style than GTA-style, wouldn't it?).  I can't really see it happening though.

Because I see the mini games popping up in other games with a plot driven story I thought it would be worth posting that this would be a problem in DAI and if it were introduced that it only be immersion appropriate.
