I'm uber excited for Inquisition, all the recent information from E3 and the new trailers has been extremely thrilling but there is one thing I'm dying to know and can't find the answers anywhere. What happened to the previous protagonists? will we see them in the new game? will we hear what happened to them? What are they doing about the crisis? What happened to their relationships and so on..
I know it is probably extremely likely that we have to wait until the game is released to find out but October is so far away, anyway interested in what people think
What is the role of The Hero of Ferelden and Hawke (The Champion) in Inquisition

I have no idea if the warden or hawke will make an appearance in the game. I'm sure they will be mentioned in some way.
Since my Warden romanced Leliana, she is relaxing at their house waiting for Leliana to finish her work helping the Inquisitor and Hawke is with Isabela on their ship traveling all over the place

All we know is they both 'disappeared', I wish both of them had a happy ending but it sucks with the lack of closure for those characters but I suppose this could be because they might consider bringing them back or something. But the disappearance is odd, were they kidnapped?
I hope the game will resolve this.
Also seems romancing Leliana is the most common

Warden could be a few things went in the mirror with morrigan so he might be looking after the kid. But if not his appearance will be when you assault the warden base. If Hawke sided with the templars like i did he might be helping the templars in the war.

There's no coincidence that they are both gone.
I am fairly sure Flemeth kidnapped 'em.

Can't say that in those cases they are actually "missing". I doubt that those group would hide the fact that they are supported by such famous figures.
Hero of Ferelden:
Depending on Origin/Dead or Alive/Mirror factors: different dialogs; small altered side missions; factions may have a bit different stand point (would be easier or harder persuade in DA:I). Cameo... unlikely.
Champion:
Based on decisions: different dialogs; small altered side missions; factions may ...
Considering that S/He has a voice-actor cameo is more possible, but most likely will be at the level of "small guest" (Maybe a little bit more that DA2 Alistair), because I don't think developers want to step on that "That's not MY..." beehive. + We would need to recreate "our" Hawke's face, on new graphical engine.

It depends on the Warden and Hawke. I'd like a mention at least but am not expecting a cameo from Warden or Hawke, but Hawke is a more likely appearance.
Honestly in regards to my characters personality (Which doesn't matter because the game won't be programmed to their specific personality, but this is in my head just a warning) I'd more want to see Rosalie Hawke , who is selfless wanting to help everyone along with her Warden sister Bethany, and friendmanced Fenris would probably tag along.
However, Selena Hawke would be off somewhere on Isabela's ship because she's done throwing herself in the middle of people (though to be fair she was dragged into the situation and sass'd it up the whole way in Kirkwall).

True but bioware might just have hawke put a helmet on to cover his custom face. But it would be easy for bioware to use my and other peoples hawkes for people who use the default face.

Well the only thing that raises any questions is what Leliana and Cassandra were discussing at the end of DA2 - they're not just off doing their business, they're missing.
I think it has to do with Flemeth, though I can't begin to speculate what. My Warden wouldn't just abandon her husband (Alistair) and her duties (as Queen). Hawke I could see vanishing off into the night with Fenris and leaving Kirkwall behind, but it seems the two (Warden/Hawke) are linked.
I would be fine to headcanon my own epilogue, but Bioware kinda took it out of our hands with that last little scene...kinda requires further explanation on their part. I don't think they're dead, and I think that Leliana, Varric, and cameo LIs will speak more on the matter.

Their role is probably to die in an explosion in the prologue that rips open the veil =P

I would love the Option to recreate them in the new Engine. This would allow for a proper Appereance and since many Wardens and Hawkes can probably play a Role it would be great to see them that Way again.
But I don't expect that. Maybe we'll have some Characters commenting about them, but unless we get the option to recreate them, I doubt we'll be seeing them.

The Warden should be dead though no matter what choice you made in terms of the Dark Ritual, The head Warden at Wessioff? should have had a hand in getting you to the Anderfels and having you assassinated, whether they know why you lived or not, (The Warden and Alistair were both new and knew nothing of any real political or secret be them dark or not secrets the Wardens had.) All this because the previous defeaters of the Arch Demon have a role to yet play in some scheme the wardens have, and having heard of one that for some reason survived should and would demand a explanation especially for the plans said Wardens have. Maybe a secret plot to resurrect these heroes with unique power similar to the arch demons they slayed, and thus them wanting to study your warden and why you lived.. maybe even realizing afterwards the soul of the old god having passed to another, and the taint been apparently separated from it.
Imagine if the Wardens could capitalize on Flemmeth's ritual, it would mean away out and rebirth of a warden, sure you are essentially just passing on the soul of a character and not their memories but some might see that as still alway to be reborn in a world that says you soul passes back to the Maker, or at the very least into the Fade.

One of the Devs mentioned that you can claim areas in the "Name of the Hero of Ferelden". Whether this is because you meet them, rescue them, find them dead was not stated. It could also be that since it had been indicated we are likely to get at least a small cameo by the Monarch of Ferelden (Alistair or Anora) that we do some sort of quest and in return are allowed to use the Hero brand to bolster our cause. In the canon version the Warden did the ultimate sacrifice, so clearly that has to be linked to the permission of the king/queen because the Warden is definitely not there to give it. In that scenario I must assume that Lelianna's reference to the disappearance of the Warden, actually referred to the replacement Warden Commander from Orlais. Whatever the case, I am hopeful we will at least get some information about what happened to the Warden.
Hawke is less clear as no mention has been made yet, but there have been hints that we will hear something. May be finding them or information about them will be part of a sub-quest.

My theory of the day:
I like the idea that they are with Flemith - they both owe their lives to her and maybe she called in her favours. I bet you they are somehow involved in helping Flemeth beat the bad guys. They will be in the background, not seen. Flemeth will be involved in the final showdown. Remember - you heard it here first! ![]()

Them being mentioned I see as pretty much guaranteed, but actually appearing would be pretty complicated. A CC in The Keep would be really neat, but I can't really see them spending that much time/effort on something like that compared to other aspects of the game.

Probably prisoners/puppets of Corypheus or Flemeth.
The only connection between the two are Corypheus (fighting Hawke, then sneaking into the Wardens) and Flemeth from what I recall.
Perhaps the Warden found Corypheus out, contacted Hawke, then something went wrong and they are captured, and somehow word of the problem gets to the Inquisition and then we have the Inquisition fighting the GWs.
