I don't think warden or hawke will make an appearance in the game.
What is the role of The Hero of Ferelden and Hawke (The Champion) in Inquisition

Hawke is running around "Saving the day" by allowing people who try to have him/her killed leave without a fight, letting spies escape with important documents, and letting people force them to take sides.
The Warden will glower at people because he/she cannot speak.

I'm hoping they return in some fashion. Or at least that their disappearing act gets resolved, they return, and move on to doing whatever it is they would have been doing before vanishing.

The Hero of Ferelden accomplished great feats and ended the Fifth Blight, one way or another. Then, if you survived and played Awakening, they became the Warden Commander and eliminated the Darkspawn threat around Amaranthine and discovered the Architect and possibly helped them.
The Champion didn't end a Blight but he/she was an integral part of the mage/templar war and, by the end of DA2, you are either a rallying call for the mages or a sign of oppression for the mages and seen as a supporter of the Templars.
Therefore, my theory is simply this. Both characters achieved major success one way or another, for good or bad, and affected the world in their own ways. Because of this, I refuse to believe that they are both dead. They are both too important to lose and the fact that they both went "missing" links the two together. Whether they WILL end up dying is a different question. As for where they are, I have no idea.
My human mage Grey Warden survived the Blight but lost personal respect when they refused to die and did the ritual with Morrigan. In order to atone for dropping the Grey Warden way, he became Commander of the Grey and vowed to do better. He figured that, by siding with the Architect, he could help calm the Darkspawn and potentially end the Blights for good and he felt that would make up for what he had done.
My Champion of Kirkwall was a female mage who looked on magic as a gift but never let it go to her head. Refusing to submit to the Chantry and their old ways and be locked away, she sided with the mages whenever she could in Kirkwall. She understood both sides of the story, however. She knew that there were mages who abused their powers and needed to be locked away but she also knew that there were other mages who just simply wanted to live a normal life. She knew that the Templars had a difficult job and that there were some truths to what they said. In the end though, when all eyes were on her, she went with her heart and became an inspiration to the mages.
TL;DR? They are both too important to simpy be dead. The fact that they both vanished without a trace (after all they had accomplished between them) leads me to believe that they DO have a role in the new game. Whether they will actually appear in the game is unknown but they are, in some capacity, alive.

One of the Devs mentioned that you can claim areas in the "Name of the Hero of Ferelden". Whether this is because you meet them, rescue them, find them dead was not stated. It could also be that since it had been indicated we are likely to get at least a small cameo by the Monarch of Ferelden (Alistair or Anora) that we do some sort of quest and in return are allowed to use the Hero brand to bolster our cause. In the canon version the Warden did the ultimate sacrifice, so clearly that has to be linked to the permission of the king/queen because the Warden is definitely not there to give it. In that scenario I must assume that Lelianna's reference to the disappearance of the Warden, actually referred to the replacement Warden Commander from Orlais. Whatever the case, I am hopeful we will at least get some information about what happened to the Warden.
Hawke is less clear as no mention has been made yet, but there have been hints that we will hear something. May be finding them or information about them will be part of a sub-quest.
I guess it could be possible that Hawke and the Warden become agents that we can send to do tasks for the inquisition.

For my canon Hawke at least I don't want her to show up again. In my story she sailed off with Isabela to become a pirate and leave everything else behind. Good reason too since Cassandra just wanted to use her to get the mages to fall back in line. So unless we can have some piracy side-quests with Hawke/Isabela lets leave them out of it.
I have heard something that there's a possibility of their return, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. I am wondering what happened to Wardens like those who went with Morrigan through the Eluvian.

Honestly I prefer the huge plot hole of them not appearing because if they appear it's 99% certain that they'll **** up something, especially on the Warden. Fact is if you make the Warden an NPC with lines and/or actions it WILL ****** a bunch of people off. The only way to be sure you get everyone's Wardens right is to give them full control over everything they say or do. Which of course BW won't do (most probably). So I say leave them out

My thing is I'd be perfectly fine if they gave their stories an "end" but its been gone out of the way to say their tales are not over. Such as in Awakening when it says "suddenly the warden disappeared without a trace, but many believe their story is not over," or something like that. As well as it being noted that Hawke has disappeared along with the Warden. Now depending on choice your warden can be King / Queen of Fereldan, and Hawke can be Viscount / Viscountress of Kirkwall. How can persons of such high standing, such high position be disregarded like that. Like for instance if Alistair is king he gets involved in the events of Dragon Age : Inquisition as we know, so isn't it off that the king / former warden would be involved but not his queen / hero of Fereldan. Or how such prominent characters such as Leliana and Morrigan, previous love interests, return to the stage, but not their past lover. And even if your Warden / Hawke don't hold such stations, I'm sure they wouldn't sit on their hands as the sky gets torn a new butthole. So to me if they make a cameo it has to mean something and not just be some cloaked character with some quick exposition, and if not that some heavy referencing and explanation as to what's become of them, or just a conclusion that can sum up why they're supposedly "gone" would make me perfectly satisfied.
