I am white, straight, and male.

Are you upset by this, bioware? Am I wrong for being white and straight and male?

No, of course not, I didn't ask to be born this way and to insult somebody for their race, gender and orientation is extremely bigoted.

I've noticed though that bioware is really trying to push the idea that non-white and bi or gay is the only way to play this game, and if one wants to play as a straight character their romance choices are extremely limited. In addition, there's a big emphasis on (dare I say) making the women in this game really quite unfeminine, if for no reason other than to appeal to ugly man-hating tumblr feminists. I'm talking breasts that sag impossibly low (Sera), a pig snout for a nose (Sera) and massive man jaws (Morrigan, Cassandra, Isabela). This is in comparison to Triss, Yennefer and Ciri from The Witcher 3. Women that *gasp* look like women. If bioware wants to make the women pretty ugly then please make the men also repulsive to look at. Thin arms and legs, massive pot bellies and greasy baby faces would be excellent.

It looks to me that bioware is trying to marginalize core gamers (men in their late teens and beyond) in favour of getting the support of the LGBT community and women, in regards to the character design and story. (actual gameplay looks really good though, looks like its moving towards a better version of DA2).

The statistic that 48% of gamers are female is extremely egregious at best. Only a tiny fraction of those females play anything that isn't extremely casual mobile games of which gender norms and sexuality etc do not apply (like flappy bird).

In conclusion, bioware is trying way too hard to appease women, people of colour and LGBT representation in games by shoehorning it all in with absolutely no subtlety and actually harming other groups in the process. The forced nature of this is both incredibly annoying and detrimental to telling a good story and also in my opinion very unflattering to those people bioware is trying to win over. Someone being gay, bi or trans does not make them superior over a straight and non trans person. Please keep that in mind bioware. It feels as if bioware can't decide which audience they want to take seriously.

In addition, I also have to say that the grammar in the promo art for the characters is incorrect and awkward to read.

Those sentences are not gramatically correct. Come on bioware you can do better than this. Or maybe not, the staff that worked on Baldur's Gate 2 are gone and you're now EA's b*tch.

Good for you. There are white straight male characters even in BioWare games. There are more of them than anyone else.

the staff that worked on Baldur's Gate 2 are gone

Just so you know, Lukas Kristjanson worked as the lead writer on BG, and David Gaider, the lead writer for DA team, writes for Bioware since BG2. Other than that, you should chill out.

...This again?

A similar post was made back in 2011 about the so-called plight of the Straight Male Gamer in Dragon Age. David Gaider responded far more eloquently than I would have. To quote:

The romances in the game are not for “the straight male gamer”. They’re for everyone. We have a lot of fans, many of whom are neither straight nor male, and they deserve no less attention. We have good numbers, after all, on the number of people who actually used similar sorts of content in DAO and thus don’t need to resort to anecdotal evidence to support our idea that their numbers are not insignificant… and that’s ignoring the idea that they don’t have just as much right to play the kind of game they wish as anyone else. The “rights” of anyone with regards to a game are murky at best, but anyone who takes that stance must apply it equally to both the minority as well as the majority. The majority has no inherent “right” to get more options than anyone else.

More than that, I would question anyone deciding they speak for “the straight male gamer” just as much as someone claiming they speak for “all RPG fans”, “all female fans” or even “all gay fans”. You don’t. If you wish to express your personal desires, then do so. I have no doubt that any opinion expressed on these forums is shared by many others, but since none of them have elected a spokesperson you’re better off not trying to be one. If your attempt is to convince BioWare developers, I can tell you that you do in fact make your opinion less convincing by doing so.

And if there is any doubt why such an opinion might be met with hostility, it has to do with privilege. You can write it off as “political correctness” if you wish, but the truth is that privilege always lies with the majority. They’re so used to being catered to that they see the lack of catering as an imbalance. They don’t see anything wrong with having things set up to suit them, what’s everyone’s fuss all about? That’s the way it should be, any everyone else should be used to not getting what they want.

The truth is that making a romance available for both genders is far less costly than creating an entirely new one. Does it create some issues of implementation? Sure– but anything you try on this front is going to have its issues, and inevitably you’ll always leave someone out in the cold. In this case, are all straight males left out in the cold? Not at all. There are romances available for them just the same as anyone else. Not all straight males require that their content be exclusive, after all, and you can see that even on this thread.

Would I do it again? I don’t know. I doubt I would have Anders make the first move again– at the time, I thought that requiring all romances to have Hawke initiate everything was the unrealistic part. Even if someone decides that this makes everyone “unrealistically” bisexual, however, or they can’t handle the idea that the character might be bisexual if they were another PC… I don’t see that as a big concern, to be honest. Romances are never one-size-fits-all, and even for those who don’t mind the sexuality issue there’s no guarantee they’ll find a character they even want to romance. That’s why romances are optional content. It’s such a personal issue that we’ll never be able to please everyone. The very best we can do is give everyone a little bit of choice, and that’s what we tried here.

And the person who says that the only way to please them is to restrict options for others is, if you ask me, the one who deserves it least. And that’s my opinion, expressed as politely as possible.

And I think that about wraps it up.

Your vitriol is confusing. Firstly, if all the women were unattractive, wouldn't that be a strike against lesbians as well? Secondly, what does being white have to do with any of this? Thirdly, you didn't mention Vivienne--oh, wait, suddenly I understood the "white" part.

I don't really get how straight males think LIs are being limited.  There's strictly straight women, there's bi women.  There's strictly gay man, lesbian woman, there's bi man and bi woman.   To me it seems the same.

Bioware is under no obligation to make a game that appeals to your narrow definitions- no matter what they are.  This rule applies to everyone who rants and raves about here on the forum.

Don't like it- don't buy it.  It's really just that easy.  You're not entitled to a game.

I think all the women are attractive in their one way. I'm glad BW didn't go the Barbie doll route. Comes down to personal preference. He doesn't like their looks. Come on if Vivienne were a real person, she'd be a model. She's gorgeous.

I also don't understand what leads the OP to make the statement about non-whites. In what way is this game against the white male? Is it because of Vivienne? Sorry but the OP comes off as extremely bigoted and racist.
