Summoner combine with nature magic. Be able to summon wolf, spider, bear, and buck (male deer). These are substance spells. The other spells  could be insect that drain your health and restores health to the caster.  Vines attacking from ground. Summon a tree to defend and take damage for you.  Use the death of your enemies to restore you by having the ground decay them for a health and mana/stamina regen.  Plants dragging to your doom. Insects and flowers causing status effects. And posion plants and the ability to turn the ground into a toxic swamp.

Your summons are the same level as you. Only one summon can be active at a time. The buck is very fast and hits hard. Those horns hurts. Basically the buck is use to take out enemy mages. Mages need time to cast spells. So boom to the chest they fall down and buck rams them again.

This would be a magic specialization. Maybe a dlc idea. But something to look into.

Shapeshifting could be bear,wolf,insects,spider, crows.

Crows can pick locks and disable traps.

While in shapeshift form your stats are increase by a certain type and you are level base of that creature.

this sounds great for a game where you only control multiple characters but for a party based game it sounds OP for a single character.

You clearly didn't read all of my post. 1 creature summon at a time. This isn't any different then ranger in origin or are you saying ranger was too powerful?

And shape shifting is not summoner.

And note on the tree shield. The tree takes x3 damage from fire base damage. But take 0 damage from nature and spirit damage.  The tree shield can be destroyed.

Shapeshifting would be cool since I saw Dragon Age Origin playthroughs on Youtube and it would be a great comeback.

only problem with shapeshifting was the limited number of skills when you change, made the character effectively useless, i cant say i ever used morrigans shapeshifting, never saw the need

What do Necromancers do then if Rift Mages are the summoners? I assume curses and the like, but Necromancers are also known for their summoning arts.

last I checked, summons are usually fodder, not mage hunting commando.

and by fodder I'm definitely not talking about tank; if the first installment and the expansion are of any reference value, one can recall that the summons hit meh, endure meh, pull meh and have little to no use outside of combat.

Comparatively speaking, sure, having a truly multi-purpose mage wouldn't break inquisition any harder than arcane bloodmage did origins, but that's not a good comparison to make.
