Like I've said int he past. Formal titles during the job, pet names in private. Win-Win.
Oh no, 'Inquisitor' is going to be the new 'Hawke' isn't it?

Our companions that are soon to be friends shouldnt be calling us inquisitor in our down time. It sounds weird and too formal.
And that is why there are set surnames for our inquisitors. It is also possible they can refer to you with some kind of nickname.
Also, how often do people even call others by name? If I see someone to ask them how they are doing I don't use their name either considering they should be able to tell I am talking to them. And even then I have been addressed by my surname more often than by my first name especially in school and at work.
And no, I don't think set first names is more important than being able to choose one. It is a terrible solution and makes Bioware games just the same as practically any other game of any other company out there. In an RPG I believe it is more important to be able to at least give your character a made up name instead of having to choose from a list because an RPG is about being able to roleplay whomever you want instead of a games company deciding that for you as well. This is why I see The Witcher series more as an action adventure type of game instead of as a real RPG.

I'd prefer to be called "my Lord Inquisitor" by them.
Lesser people will have to refer to be as "m'lud", since "Inquisitor" is probably too many syllables for peasant tongues.

Dont bother me tbh, the alternative is they just dont call you anything, which i guess alot of you wouldnt mind, but i prefer being called something an if it means the reference me with my title so be it

No, the alternative according to some would be set first names, which takes away too much choice for no real, important, gain. There are enough games out there already where you don't get to name your character at all, no need to expand this to real RPGs as well just because some people can't deal with being called by their surname, despite the fact this does happen in real life. Not to mention that there is no real need to address someone by their name all of the time. If you ask someone how they are doing, I don't see why a name needs to be said at all if it is clear you are talking to them and not someone else.

I hope they can pull something like this off in game. Even if the Pet names are set in stone/contrived...I rather be called "Eminence" while out adventuring and having companions call my character something more personal during 'camp' time.

Where did this "Eminence" thing come from?
This thread is the first I've heard of it and... I'm not a fan. Far too grandiose for me.

Since the game is fully voiced the only options are having the companions refer to the player character by title or last name, or the player character having a canon name that the player can't alter. If you want characters to refer to the Inquisitor by first name, he or she would need to have a first name created by the writers that the player can't change.

It appeared in a gameplay video (26:38). Soldiers of the Inquisition calling him "Eminence". It's not strange; for each title, there's a protocolary treatment. The Empress of Orlais is "Her Imperial Majesty", while the Divine is "Her Holiness". WoT even gave a complete chart of forms of address for nobles in Orlais, as in giving us a clue that in Orlais protocol is serious business. The Inquisitor must have one then.

Which, I've got to say, I think is pretty awesome. Now all I need is to be announced at the door as such when we attend that party in Halamshiral.
"Announcing His/Her Eminence, Lord/Lady Inquisitor [Last Name Here] of the Inquisition."
On topic, I really hope they come up with some sort of pet name, at least for the LIs to use. Didn't Merrill occasionally address Hawke by that elven word that means "dear one" or something in her romance? And I actually thought Thane's use of 'siha' was rather cute in Mass Effect, though I've never actually played his romance. With non-LI companions I'm willing to abide with DA:O's policy of avoiding referring to the Inquisitor by name or title.

I suppose so long as it's only grunts and soldiers and the like that call us that... I just don't want party members and main characters going and calling me that.

I hope we're mostly called Inquisitor not Eminence.
I would like to hear surnames too.

Outside of your close relationships most would call you sir, mam, or Inquisitor. Varric might give you a nickname that fits all or one for each gender. The only problem I see with this is love interests. But I assume they will just say things like "my love", "darling", "dearest", etc.

We don't know that. Every playable race has a unique last name. It's quite possible your character will be referred to by last name by some characters (Cass isn't one of them, we've heard her call the main character "Inquisitor" before).

Will have to settle for Eminence based on stuff so far, trust me more powerful meaning then Lord in a society dragon age takes place in.
Suppose they could dust off Grand/High Inquisitor also,

What's the point of having a given name in a game when nobody use it ? Save game ? The illusion of making your own character ?
Hmm

Hopefully surnames will change that a bit, but even then, what did you expect a system that pronounces the names each player types in?
Well, yes. Sometime in the future hopefully!

I think that's a way off at this point. And when we get to that point, voice actors will be out of business.

Both. The way old games got around it is not having voice acting involved. (However, that was mainly due to technical limitation) Games made in the like of D&D still do this.

Dont get me wrong, id love that more than anything, its just not realistic to expect anything of quality to be implemented in terms of a system like that unless you want them to sound like Glados
