Oh no, 'Inquisitor' is going to be the new 'Hawke' isn't it?

I really don't have a problem if the close companions and LI don't call me anything when talking to me.  I find the idea strange.  When I'm with friends, or my family we look at each other when we talk and don't start out every conversation with - Tom, do you want a beer.  Molly, did you work yesterday.  John that suit looks great on you.  -  unless the person is in another room, or across the road and someone yells TONY  come on over here I want to talk to you.

I'm not sure I want them to give me a nickname, unless we have options to pick from.  Sparkles is nice.

   I'm all ears beautiful.

Beautiful? isn't that a little inappropriate?

is there something  you'd rather I call you?

   how about gorgeous?

True this wasn't a real option, but it did make me laugh.

I can't wait till my friends, allies and LI calls me by my TITLE :'(
At least with Hawke it was technically our name.

How awkward is this going to be?

I thought this was going to be a reveal of how everything goes to **** for the inquisitor and there is nothing you can do about it as you play a character who has the worst life ever in the history of ever.

To which I would have responded with

"Don't say that! Don't you EVER SAY THAT!" and then go sob quietly in a traumatized ball in the corner.

Your explanation is much more agreeable to me.  I kinda expected it, ME shepard was Commander or Shepard.  DAO you were addressed as Warden and DA2 you were Hawke.

Wow.... just wow.

Its not like anyone in Origins ever referred to the PC as Warden. No, Clearly they just said , hey you.

Blank Stare.

Wow.

I've been wishing for a set of pre-set first names to choose from for a while now, so characters that are personally close to you can address you by name every once in a blue moon. If you had six options per cc combination, it'd just mean that either the occasional line would have to be written to disc 48 times, or 48 variations as long as you avoid writing the name and class (or whatever's being referenced) into the same sentence between pauses. I'd gladly give up the blank first name to make those scenes feel that much more real. It'd eliminate that disconnect everybody has now. I don't think there's anybody that doesn't recognize how awkward the names are now, whether you care about it or not.

I'm not really a fan of it because it makes me wonder why no one else is just called "Inquisitor."

Isn't everyone in your party technically an "inquisitor?"

At least Shepard and Hawke were your characters names so it made some sense...

I think that's a way off at this point.  And when we get to that point, voice actors will be out of business.

Well, all they will do is speak a couple of lines into a voice box and that voice box and can generate a 10 million different words and phrases in their voice.

The problem with a vocalyzer, assuming it would sound natural, is that you'd have a hard time getting inflection and emotional information out of a procedural generator, at a high quality anyway. But if my NBA 2K can go seamlessly insert a chosen first and last name out of hundreds of options each, Dragon Age shouldn't have a problem fetching a few lines for 48. That's the way I'd go with it.

I like "Eminence" and I'm fine with companions using the surname or a pet name or some version of friend/love. And anything is better than "Warden."

It is a matter of courtesy and etiquette to name someone when there are more people in the room part of a conversation. Also, addressing by title confers status to the one being spoken and the person speaking the title expects to gain a little recognition at least from whom he/she addresses. It is why there are volumes on diplomacy. It is better to hear a placename than nothing at all.

I don't need to name a character to feel it is mine to control. That was done in the design of the game. As long as I have a level control as typical in a BW game then I am pleased. Being able to choose significant actions and even varying spoken words really flesh out a game and allow roleplaying. A name is just a name.

I dislike the silent protagonist anymore as people talking to you is quite stilted asking questions for you and the like. It was the norm but the new direction of BW making games more emotional and cinematic is where I envisioned they could go long ago. I get some people may not like it sorry.

It will only become an issue when characters stop referring to the Inquisitor in a formal matter and instead try to engage him/her in a more intimate matter. When I'm leading an army and fighting dragons I don't mind being referred to by my title, when I'm making love with my sweetheart however I don't want to be that person to be calling me by my title, I would prefer something more personable, something more intimate.

Hopefully the Inquisitor will have a selection of default surnames ( or perhaps first names ) so that we can avoid potentially awkward scenes like the one from the scenario I just described.

I named my female Hawke "Sera" and had a lot of people calling her by her full name. :)

I'm interested about the rest of the Inquisition. If the PC is THE Inquisitor, what are the others? How do you call them?

That's especially important if the Inquisition goes on after the game ends. Will there be only one Inquisitor in all Thedas? Will the PC become the "Inquisitor General" or "Grand Inquisitor" and give orders to other Inquisitors? (that's assuming they survive, of course, but giben Bioware's record with protagonists...)

That's the price for allowing the player to choose the name.

It will make the love scenes sound odd.

"Oh yes take me Inquisitor!" Sounds like a S&M thing.

tbh having to do the VA for the many variations of dialogue with two pre-set names (one for each gender) alone would be hard enough as it is. Anymore and it just becomes to costly to manage it would be easier said then done.

I do not want default names. It's a slippery slope to having a default character. I can not play the Witcher because the game(s) resemble a great Bioware RPG, sans me being be able make my own character. I can't stand that Bitcher.

I would also hope that surnames would be mentioned in dialogue at least infrequently. Or they come up with something else, otherwise we're gonna have to return to DAO where they slyly worded dialogue to not mention the protagonist by name at all, they literally called him "you" at times.

The should make the inquisitor an amnesiac and early in the game everyone will learn that he is Revan, so everyone will just call him that. One name to rule them all.

Titles work well enough if your simply cool or impressive enough to warrant it, or have enough pop culture to back it up.  "Lord Vader".  "Doctor". and a few other sci-fi classics serve as examples.

I would rather have a nameless DA:O than DA2's Hawke.  Is that because names are bad, or because DA2 disappointed me even more than ME3?

If I recall, DA:O found uses for the surnames occasionally (Usually only in the Origin stories though).  I expect to hear the surname used in particular instances, like announcing the Inquisitor according to their full title, but not very often.
