I know that this is probably way too late or may have been brought up before but, in both DA:O and DA2 with subtitles you had the option of having them off while traveling around the world but come on for conversations/cutscenes or on all the time.

What I would like to see is if we could have the option to have them on while traveling and off during conversations.

The thing is while traveling and something sets off the party banter I'm sometimes distracted by something else and miss part of what they're saying, so I have the subtitles on so I can read what I missed.

But during conversations/cutscenes my full attention is on what the characters are saying so I don't really need them then and the subtitles generally go over the characters face's and the can be pretty immersion breaking.

So yeah, could this be an option?

tl/dr: an option to have subtitles only come on outside of conversations/cutscenes

Many games do have this option so it would be odd for this not to be in the game

Yet not in either of the DA games. I just finished off a playthrough of both and either it was on all the time or just for conversations. No option just to have it on while wandering the world.

I am playing Origins and they are there.

Why not just have them on all the time? Does it really bother you that much to have them on during conversations?

I do have them on all the time. And well, yes, it does bother me to have them on during conversations. That's why I made this thread. During the conversations you can be having a dramatic moment, but you can't see the look on the characters faces because there's a wall of text in front of them.

Can I ask what system you are playing on?

I'm for this as well. If for screenshot reasons then nothing else. I don't tend to take a lot of screenshots while walking around adventuring, but I DO during cutscenes.Having the option to have the subtitles on during random adventuring means I can stop and read what folks are saying to each other, even if the music overshadows the voice actors. But during cutscene conversations I don't want huge lines of text taking up room in a screenshot i might want to take.

Normally for my first couple of playthroughs I'll run full subtitles. I've spent most of my life living with a deaf person and have gotten used to reading what I was hearing, so in the beginning its my preferred option. But later on I like taking screenshots and as per above, lines of text ruin them, while I still enjoy read/hearing the companion chatter :)

I play with the subtitles on all the time.

Me too.

There are also many non-English speaking players who appreciate having subtitles to not miss anything.

Subtitles in DA never went "in front of characters' faces" during conversations/cutscenes; they were on top of the screen and quite off the way, leaving the characters fully visible.

I'm not suggesting that subtitles be removed completely, in fact quite the opposite! I'm just suggesting that there could be more options added to enhance some people's enjoyment of the game.

I am not in any way, shape or form saying that subtitles should be removed. While not deaf I am occasionally hard of hearing, always have been, always will be. And I know what a god-send subtitles can be. There is all ready an option to have subtitles on only with conversations and off while wandering the world, all I'm asking is that there be an option that this could be reversed. On while wandering, all the better to follow party banter, and off in conversations.

It's not really that huge an ask, it it?

See i usually play with subtitles on all the time but i'm a habit of skipping using the esc/square(ps3) button whenever I play once i read through the text, i like not having subtitles on in conversations especially in DA2 where it's more cinematic so i can appreciate the scene and the voice acting without having text to distract me. But at the same time I would also like text boxes to appear around in the world when for example companions banter or npc's are spouting something without having to have htem on in conversations which is what the op is asking.

I'm not sure about DAO since I haven't played it in awhile but I know for sure that DA2 doesn't give you an option to not have subtitles in conversations and have them in open world, just subtitles constantly on or just in conversations only. Which I would hope they would allow the option for in DAI. :D
