Ah crap, Nat... now I'm going to have to go into the stupid romance thread. You just had to tempt me, didn't you?
I'm not a big romance person, often I don't even do the romances, and I only really care this time around cause of Varric, so I have gone into that thread exactly twice- once on accident when I misclicked, and once to see a post of Allan's. Dang it- I'm holding my nose now and plunging in!

i dont want to look rude, but this is ridiculous... Racist against fantasy race in a game?... we are talking about qunari...elves and dwarves(its not real).... this is not racist... this is gaming... i dont even want to go look in the romance thread... i guess people always need to argue about something... i understand their points.. but calling this racist... i think its an insult to people who really live with racism everyday...
ps: sorry i really dont mean that in any offensive way, love you all
Eh. I do sympathize with the idea that we use fiction to explore complicated, ugly issues at a remove. And if you're using human-elf relationships as a metaphor for gentile-Jewish relationships (this is a random example), then I can see how that could get problematic. I just don't care for the sweeping generalizations.

The older I get, the more that blanket statements just infuriate me. I had to do that a lot back when I was a little braver and used to get into mage/templar debates on the forums. I was usually nicer than this, but in my thoughts..
"You do f*cking NOT speak for everyone in your f*cking group. ONE of your f*cking friends doesn't mean everyone is that way. F*cking stop it!"
I keep my language clean on the forums, but in real life, especially when I'm very tired, I cuss like a sailor.
@Jewlie No doubt hun. By the way, how are you feeling today?

Hi! I feel so much sympathy for those of you interested in a Varric romance. Though I'm dying for some Solas loving I will be so happy for you guys if they confirm Varric
It'll help me through the tears.
Now get it over with and tell us Bioware

well, maybe if you stopped insulting the memory of their forefathers...
For reals, though, that board is a pendulum swinging between great and terrifying at all times
Yup, it's so nice when the topic changes to something that's safe, I skip in...drop a comment or two and before you know it the topic is right back in dangerous territory so I creep out quietly...

Aww, thanks for coming by. We're rooting for you guys too; a Fade romantic date would be really cool and I do think he's cute. ![]()
I think BW's marketing team dun goofed here. This hasn't been healthy for the morale of the forums have this stuff coming out in dribs and drabs like this. Watching some of the Blackwall/Solas/Vivi/Varric fans getting into arguments has been rather sad. ![]()

Why can't people just have faith in the writers? This is Bioware, if they say they have a good story reason then they have a good story reason. As much as people like to complain about DA2 and ME3, most of us agree that the characters were spot on. I just can't see any point to arguing about race gating when we don't know who is gated or why. That's all I'm going to say, if people want to keep arguing they can do that. I'm not touching it.
And yes, while I agree that you can explore difficult subjects by using fiction, some people take things way to personal. At some point you need to step back and tell yourself that it's just a game.

Just saw this in the Romance thread and I had to cover my mouth because I was giggling so hard it could have woke up my hubby:
In response to comment (Jessica is reading off some real criticisms they've gotten): "It seems like you're making games for minorities, and straight white guys are an afterthought."
P. Weekes: I think straighty is gonna be ok. I think straighty's gonna make it through.
David: *laughing* Stop saying "straighty"!
P. Weekes: I can say that, i'm a straight guy. I'm taking the word back.

I agree! These guys put their heart and soul into what they write. The cuts that they have to make to the dialogue and story sounds like at times it can verge on a little heartbreaking for them. Plus, I know that sometimes they want to tell us what's coming. I get the hunch that at this point they want this LI mess to end as much as we do. However, they can't until they get the ok from the marketing department. It must be a little frustrating. I think writers like Mary avoid the forums out of caution to avoid giving anything anyway they shouldn't. I could be very wrong, but it's a hunch I have.
With regards to the writing and art teams, I guess that's why I'm getting pretty fed up with folks calling Iron Bull a "monster" or Solas "Nosferatu" (holy Odin, I spelled that right!) The writing team as well as the art team and cinematic team worked their tails off in order to give us what we have.
The writers do have a little bit of say in how the look of the character turns out, but the art team is just as amazing to me. They take basic ideas: "dwarf," "beardless," "late 20s," "exposed chest hair," "crossbow," "leather armor," and the art team takes it and brings it life. They have just as much of a hand shaping our characters as much as the writing team.

Sorry for the FTFY, but I've seen folks claim their views for everyone the world over that fits into whatever group that they belong to.

The Nosferatu thing still pisses me off. I mean, full disclosure, first time I saw Solas I went, "Eh, not really my type, hope he's not romanceable." I changed my mind later, but that was my first reaction. But I never would have mocked the character as ugly, or whined about how getting him meant getting screwed over. It still blows my mind how rude people can be about this stuff. The devs interact with us all the time, and I appreciate that, and you'd think we'd be more polite as a community because of it... but no.
Edit: Politer is totally a word, shut up.

Give me a few. There is a great article Allan has put up in threads before from pbs.org One of the points of the article was that some studies over years showed that boys take up 90% of the classroom time, even in classrooms that have around a 50/50 split. When one of the teachers decided to give both genders equal time, the boys complained that they were being neglected and even the teacher had to overcome his own feelings that he was "neglecting to give male students enough attention."
Even though it was just equal.

I saw the 'monster' thing last night and want to thank you for your reply on that.
On a rare occasion, someone will come into IB's thread and talk about how 'ugly' he is and we're pretty carefree in there so we just ignore them, but it gets a little irritating after awhile. This is why I left the DA facebook page for good and came here. It's way better here, but every once in awhile I see something that reminds me of how horrible it was there. *shudder*
edit: and interesting! I would love to see that article... it would really help explain why some reactions seem so strange to me. x.x
