Thanks! If this is what they do, I'm curious to see how they'd justify him liking elves but not humans. Elves seem to have gotten a lot taller and aren't so physically different from humans (apart from the awesome ears). But I could see him being anti-Qunari after Kirkwall. Vivienne being race gated would definitely seem to fit her personality.

though if Vivi is into qunaris I'd be a little curious as to why. Isn't that a bit scandalous?

The ears are impossible to resist.

Indeed. Two extra romances gated for just two races (one of which isn't very popular). Unless they are very storycentric romances I doubt Bioware would go through all that trouble...

So... Out of curiosity, since a number of us are into fanfiction, or are at least familiar with it, what sort of romance tropes do you think might make into into a Varric romance in-game? Other than friends to lovers. Or, if you don't know, what would you like to see?

So I thought I'd wander into the Varric thread and see what was up, and this thing of beauty has just reminded me exactly how much I loved Varric in DA2. And how frustrated I was that hitting on him produced zero results. And what a hot jacket that is. 

 

I think I need to come in here more often. 

 

If you don't mind my asking, is there a going theory in here on if/how he'd be gated if he's available? I'm planning on playing an elf and then a human (one a rogue, one a mage, haven't decided which is which yet but both female) and I'm hoping that if Varric is a LI that he'd be an option for either. For what it's worth, I'm feeling like he's awfully likely as one of the remaining two.

 

Oh, we got theories. We got theories coming out our ears. My personal take?

 

Iron Bull and Varric were both originally race-gated, so I don't see a lot of gates there. I doubt two of the three(ish) male LIs would have a bunch of gates between the two of them. And given the fact that Iron Bull was finished with some crunch-time, I'm guessing he only had one racegate. So Varric probably has one gate himself, maybe two.

 

He has some issues with Qunari after Kirkwall. If he's racegated at all, this is almost certainly one.

 

He's mentioned in canon he doesn't go for humans, but it's hard to say if he was being serious. Still possible.

 

So my guess is he's available for dwarves, elves, and probably humans.
