I let him have the shard because I was weak, admittedly. It was easier for me to deny Merrill for her own safety on her quest, but Varric was so adamant on keeping it and I didn't want him mad at me. I really hope I didn't make a horrible choice. ![]()

With the lyrium shard, I just had Sandal deal with it. So I'm not too worried there. I wasn't letting that shard o' crazy stick that close to Varric or the rest of the party for that matter.

I also loved the nicknames he gave the characters (Minus Aveline and Hawke)
Though I did giggle when I heard him call Selena 'Chuckles' because she was sarcastic Hawke 100%. It fit her personality I had in my mind perfectly, including that awkward joke when Saemus died in the Chantry. She doesn't know how to deal with those kind of situations.
Though My Diplomatic Hawke/Rosalie being called Waffles made me go ? WHY WAFFLES? haha
Varric's nickname's were a really neat aspect for his character. I cannot wait to see what nicknames he has for the companions for Inquisition ![]()
My guesses so far are: Cassandra:Seeker (we know this one so...freebie), Solas: Baldy, Iron Bull: Horny(
), Dorian: Moustachio or Mustache twirler, Vivienne: Fancy Pants, Cole: Shaggy. The rest I have no clue as to what their nickname could be. Some of these I completely guessed on so if their not Varric's style then I don't know what their nicknames will be.

I let him keep it one play through (the shard) and just thought : "What have I done? D:" because I was so worried he'd go CRAZY LIKE Meredith and his brother. SO, I destroyed it all the other times. Haha

It is harder to say no to Varric than to Merrill. I guess he just has better sad puppy eyes.

But then again I always felt like I was Merrill's mother.
"Merrill you stop working on that Satanic Mirror or you are GROUNDED!"
"You're ruining my life! Sally's mom lets her have a Satanic Mirror!"
"Don't you talk to me that way young lady! You go to your room!"

Thanks!
I will tell you now though. I will not be able to take the game seriously if I keep hearing Varric call Iron Bull "Horny" all the time. All the bad parts of the game will be overtaken by my laughter.

I've just imagined Merrill laying on her stomach in her little house, communicating to Sally via the fade
"Hawke is such a loser--She's all ' Blood Magic is bad' and 'I only do this because I love you'. I wish I had your mom." and slamming her door loudly ala moody teen.

I like this question - I think I might have to steal it for the Morrigan thread.
I mentioned this before in the last incarnation of the Varric thread, but I would say that he really started to grow on me after reading about the Legacy DLC. I found the death of Leandra to be extremely disturbing - so much so that I have a hard time replaying DA 2 because of it. Hawke's fireside chat with his deceased mother was really moving, though, and helped make the whole episode a bit more bearable. Varric later admits that he invented the conversation because he felt like Hawke deserved closure.

....What made Varric think Hawke was partner-material? Why was he waiting for him/her in Hightown? Was their reputation that good?

Yeah I denied both Varric and Merrill during my first playthrough. I actually found denying Varric to be incredibly easy, the shard kinda sent his usual personality out the window for a moment, and I had no problem pissing off the snappish grump it left behind.

I always wondered that personally!
I understand that he heard good things about Hawke through the smugglers/Mercaneries but at the same time it's a big risk he took!

From what I heard, he was waiting for Hawke. She had developed "quite the name for his/herself," so I'm betting word got around. Plus, it didn't seem to be a big secret that either Hawke or Bethany was a capable apostate. Combine that with the statements that everyone was looking for a way out of the slums, and Varric probably decided Hawke was a safe bet.

So, Varric lovers of the thread; What was the moment that made you really fancy Varric?
I am curious!
"Varric Tethras, at your service."
No doubt that I agree with this single sentence, before it as well. He is different than most dwarves...of course his past has some of the involvement, but he even says that dwarves in Ozammar have a superiority complex, but then again what race does not in Dragon Age (XD)? I started to notice this more come around my second play-through and I really started to notice things about him instead about just the game itself. Varric is suave, expressive, a liar, a story-teller, gentlemen, loyal, flirty (the teases hurts though because we cannot have him!), and sexy dwarf if I might add.... But it is not just about looks. He has standards and dignity... For that I praise him also.
Though he is not always about greed...The stories he makes are much richer than just gold and how he can be so persuasive, charming, and witty if felt like. That and he gets a long with mostly everyone he meets, easy-going and all. He brings humor and life to the group which he needs more credit because of Anders and his mage issues and the broody elf guy. They all have hard times because of their past and Varric did not have it easy either, but his attitude reflects something else that he is trying to make the most of it, not by talking about it or mentioning it every five seconds (I swear) but by taking care of it off hand and protects his friends and family as a focus.
It is when I went through and actually started reading a lot of stuff, including the Codex... I noticed the quests, the rumors.... Everything involves Varric hearing in on everything and giving you the information. Including the conversations that you have with him around just by walking about, Anders brought up something about his clinic being more quieter and believe Varric is involved... Varric non-nonchalantly/humbly dismisses saying he is a merchant and business man, but he protects those he cares about without saying anything. That just warmed my heart. Also, the stories he makes is not about him or anything, it's about his friends, the Champion and others...
Even when he brought up some personal business (though it still could be relevant to explain what happened overall to the Seeker) he tried to make it into a joke or otherwise dismiss it because maybe it is not about him... And it is kind of personal since it involved his brother. I felt bad for him... I probably would not have wanted to talk about it either, but since the madness had to explained (Honestly though what more do you need? Bartrand lost it, he sold the thing to someone else. It was resolved. End of discussion). He did it anyway.
I am seriously hoping that this third installment he will do things like that for you and more of course...I hope I can do more for him and hopefully he can be romanced because I'll will raise Hell if not haha! Honestly I am scared that he won't... argh. I am sick and tired of romancing elves and humans. They are not the only races with FEELINGS, though the Qunari are bit of a mystery in that sense and entertaining to think about. (Also noticed if you go by the window in the high-town estates you own... F!Hawke wonders what Varric was up to... COME ON! My character and I were in love with the guy!)
Take this all with a grain of salt as it is just my opinion.... (Little overboard maybe?)
GIVE US SOME VARRIC LOVE FFS!

Ironically enough, that's pretty the most classic dwarven line you can think of, except maybe "hi-ho". It's how all the Dwarves first introduce themselves in "The Hobbit" as well.

I suppose, but when he walks up to you in a swagger, with a spreading grin playing on his lips while twirling an arrow with his fingers, I do not start thinking about "The Hobbit" or anything else that has some kind of dwarf in it. At least he was not wielding an axe.... And the fact that he even bothered to stop the thief, get involved, and introduced himself set me off.
