Hmm varric sticking it to Orzammar- race-gated against dwarves! (I would cry)
Not going to lie, I would snicker a bit because so many are convinced he'll be dwarf only. And then I would cry because my hopes for a dwarven power couple would be crushed...
This is kind of making me think Varric would rebel and marry someone other than a dwarf just to rebel. I seem to remember him being pretty vocal in his displeasure about the caste system and just Orzamaar's society in general.
I've always wondered if the reason he shaves his beard has something to do with this as well. Oghren has a quote in Origins about the importance of beards among dwarves and I'm pretty sure most of the higher caste dwarves have beards. Shaving could be his way of "sticking it to the man".
Actually, I could really see him doing that. It's very..Varric.
I'm not convinced that the racegating is due to story reasons so much as animation reasons that are excused by story reasons. That is what happened with Iron Bull. As soon as the animations are in, suddenly he's not worried about breaking the Inquisitor.
As far as Varric with a human, they may be able to use the male Dwarf x Josephine/Cassandra/Dorian animations.

I know some people are bothered by the idea of reusing animations but I'm not. As I've said before I'm more interested in unique dialogues than unique animations.
That's not weird, I've been thinking the same thing. Even if we can't romance him, I want him to know how I feel at least. I don't want the playful, round-about way Hawke did it in DA2, I want my Quizzy to pour her heart and soul out to him! Then, he can let her down easy but I just want him to acknowledge her feelings. It'll hurt but at least we got to tell him and I won't have to deal with the "what if'?"
I am so glad I'm not alone in wanting this. I mean I at least want to be able to try, even if it gives me a hardcore case of the sad feels. 
Guys, when have Varric ever seemed to care about dwarven traditions? I don't think that he'll use that as a gating excuse.

In addition to what he said in DA2 to begin with, his bio makes a point that he doesn't really like the Orzammar dwarves very much. All of his contacts are Merchant Guild.
I can't really imagine the Merchant Guild caring about whether Varric has a child or who he's dating.
I think it's more likely that the reasons he would have for not dating x race would be: He's just not into them. In the case of Qunari, he could also be uncomfortable being with a qunari because of the bad memories from Kirkwall.

No, your definitely not alone. It drove a stake through my heart every-time I was given the option to flirt with him and Hawke would just make some semi-serious joke about Bianca or whatever; then they'd both laugh and that was the end of it... *sigh* Let's just hope we get a little more closure this time around.
