Hey, a little off topic - because it doesn't really involve Varric - but I did have a question. I'm sure it's been answered before, so I'm kind of hesitant to ask outside of this thread.  I hated having to wear helmets in Origins, but I liked being able to have the full set bonus that some armors have. DA2 was nice because we could still equip the helmet, but didn't have to see it outside of the inventory screen. So, have the devs announced if there will be an option - like in DA2 - to toggle off the appearance of helmets? Because that is one of the things - other than the Varric romance - that I'm still anxious to hear about.

If Varric is gated, this is what I figure.

 

Qunari--Maybe.  I'm of two minds about this.

 

I'm going to do some more research on the effects of PTSD, but I wouldn't be surprised if Varric's got a mild case of it due to the Qunari.  Not to the levels that apparently Iron Bull's story arc is getting into, but I think it's still there for Varric.  My husband recommended a couple of documentaries about that.  I know of vets of wars as well as victims of terrorist attacks that don't hate every member of the aggressor's group, and might have friends with them after the conflict.  The ones that are shell shocked don't typically feel romantically attracted to the group, although there are exceptions of course.

 

I don't think he'd actively be racist towards any Qunari.   I don't think he's changed that much; I can't see Varric hating ever single member of any group just because of how they were born.  Perhaps very cautious, leery, but not hating every member of the race.  I also think the gate might happen, but not just because of Kirkwall.  Remember, Tallis was of the Qun and thanks to her, he found himself battling a wyvern and almost starting a huge political SNAFU.  So far, the ways of the Qun have come back to bite him in the arse twice.  We all know that our Qunari isn't of the Qun and I'm pretty sure we can tell Varric as such.  That doesn't mean that the association would ever entirely go away.  Combine the two and I don't see how a romantic attraction would work.  

 

Actually, that show I just mentioned marathoning, "In the Flesh" had a very good depiction of how PTSD could get in the way of social interactions and and sexual attraction without making the character look like a racisit douchebag. In the show people suffering from zombieism have these really warped dead looking eyes. For awhile, prior to a treatment being discovered, anyone with those dead-looking eyes was pretty much shoot on sight, cause that meant they were rabid brain craving zombies. Now a treatment's been discovered that allows the zombies to function as normal people, though they still have those creepy dead eyes. One of the main characters was on the frontlines during the initial zombie outbreak and can't look any zombie in the eye without suffering from some serious PTSD induced flashbacks of her experiences. It makes sense, prior to the cure she'd only ever been exposed to zombies when pitted against them in a very violent guerrilla warfare, so she associates the dead eyes with the pain and destruction she experienced when fighting them.

 

I'd say something similar might happen with Varric. He's only ever known/met Qunari in violent and frightening situations, so it could be that he came to subconsciously associate the grey skin, horns, and gigantic size with the violence he suffered through. It might not be enough to make him outwardly racist, but it might be enough for him to have a great deal of difficulty forming romantic attachments to anyone of the horned race.

Someone yesterday asked about my thoughts about Bianca.  I managed to dig up my post:

 

 

Here's just my thoughts on how to include Bianca in with a Varric LI.  Your mileage may vary of course, but this is my ideas about her and Varric.

 

 

How do you think might it be plot related? 

The Merchant Guild's connection might coming into play.  The Carta as well and the strong hints of Varric's and Bianca's ties to that group as well in the past.   I've kicked around a few ideas:

 

1) The Carta's role in Legacy is likely going to come up.  After all, Varric did have to kill Bianca's (the xbow) creator, and I have a feeling that Bianca (the woman) may have heard of that.  I'm also willing to bet the knowledge that part of the Carta broke off and vanished was spread throughout the organization.

 

2) If they play their cards right, they could have a stronger foothold in the black market trade.  With the Circles gone and the Chantry divided, getting legitimate lyrium supplies could be rather difficult from some groups.  The Carta is happy to help with the cost...

 

3) They could have full blown mostly fallen in league with the Red Templars due to the red lyrium driving them insane.  Bianca asks for Varric's help in trying to save some of her friends.

 

4) A bounty on Varric's head for the deaths of several Carta members (in and out of the DLC,) has been issued.  Under false pretenses, Bianca has come to end Varric for good.

 

5) Bianca is torn between the Carta/the Guild and her former lover.  She's passes Varric along information that's crucial to a major quest.  Stating that she can't get too deeply involved, she lets Varric know that she never meant to hurt him so bad.  They then part ways, leaving Varric free to move on.

 

That's about it, now off to watch Frozen for the first time with my hubby.

I vote we make page 200 a more sophisticated affair, with champagne and classical music. We had a huge bash for page 100 (and 101, and 102) we are now a far more mature thread, being a full  3 days older and everything, and we should celebrate in a manner reflective of that new maturity .
