Varric the Storyteller: Keeping us company in the Keep

Okay, so back when we picked apart what the dev said about Varric still being hung up on Bianca. One theory bantered about (feel free to claim your theory) was that Varric might just be a difficult romance. Take it too seriously, he gets frightened and breaks it off. Take it not seriously enough, he thinks you're playing. That makes sense, because Varric covers up anything he doesn't want to deal with using humor and word play, like when he overblew his involvement with Bartrand and the mansion. His relationship with Isabella is also full of playful flirting and suggestive dialog.
If the dialog wheel is similar to that of DA2, with one nice answer, one sarcastic, an aggressive, and a romance, what if they throw us a curve ball and, having spent the last game training us to hit the romance option any time it comes up, with Varric we can only hit it every other time the heart icon appears? Or every third? And choosing the heart at all opportunities causes Varric to treat you like he does Isabella, but too few and he doesn't even think about it?
Funfunfun.
Cheers that was my theory (just about verbatim) and yeah it sounds complicated when you start phrasing is as button sequences and such, but I think it would actually be a bit easier is practice. If you get to know Varric well as a player you'll have an easier time understanding what would go over his head, or make him uncomfortable. By judging his mood in the moment, it might be easier than you think to pick the "right options", though I kinda cringe when describing it that way.

Oooh, instead of there being a pattern, pick the heart response he responds to vs the one that scares him? PERFECT!

The new Varric thread looks great so far! That said I hope Varric will tell us the exaggerated versions of his adventures with Hawke or any stories for that matter, his voice is awesome. They were always fun when you got to hear a bit of them in DA 2 before you started chatting with him ![]()

What's with everyone doing new threads? This makes 3 now: Solas, Varric, and Vivienne.

Oh I'd love to hear him retell some of the more "boring" sidequests. I'd like to hear the Aveline/Donnic romance quest through his story filter.

People wanted active OP's who could update the top post with new information on the characters in question.

My theory is that when prompted, Varric can do, "Previously, on Dragon Age..." segments in the style of the opening before importing the warden. That way Hawke and the Warden could be in Inquisition without anyone objecting to not having control of the character, or their appearance.
It would be something like:
Inquisitor: Varric, tell me about the warden.
Varric: What did you want to hear?
Inquisitor: About how she saved the Circle.

That'd be a good way to get players updated on what happened in previous games, Learn about it while interacting with the character known for telling stories. You could have him do Hawke and Leliana do the Warden.

Although Varric telling stories he wasn't there for sounds fun. Maybe Leliana walks in and fusses that it didn't happen that way, especially Leliana was the warden's LI.

Would like to add some of my old banter to this thread:
Solas/Iron Bull/Varric
Varric: Hey baldy I heard some of the others are giving you trouble. You want to hear a story to cheer you up?
Solas: It depends does it involve sex or a lesson on how one should handle Bianca's trigger?
Iron Bull: It better involve sex. Speaking of sex you should get some Solas. What do you say? Want to ride the bull?
Solas: Er no thanks I'm good.
Iron Bull: Ah maybe later then! I have never been with an elf. Most seemed too fragile, but you seem...different. Thought I would test that.
Solas: *blushes*
Varric: Hehe you should see the look on your face baldy. It tells a whole other story.
Solas: I think we're done with this conversation.
Varric: Who said anything about "we" I think I might write another book called "So a Qunari and an Elf walk Into a Tavern and they..."
Solas: They what?
Varric: There is nothing more to the title. You see baldy one of the important things you need to think about when writing a story is that you have to have a title. A title that grabs the writers' attention.
Solas: So why not just call it "The Qunari and the Elf have Sex". It would seem that alone would grab people's attention?
Iron Bull: I like the way you think Solas! Think of the MAYHEM!
Varric: I think your finally starting to loosen up baldy.
Edit: sorry if some think it's inappropriate, but Iron Bull and Varric are a part of this so... ![]()

^ Reminds me of a banter I did between Solas and Cass, they were so used to dealing with Varric, Iron Bull and the other party members that they'd forgotten what it was like to have a conversation that didn't include crude humor or bullshit claims.
"So no ****, the Warden rips the head straight off of an attacking genlock when-"
*Leliana and Cassandra bust in*
"Bullshit!"
We do have three very experience mages on our side. I bet they figure out a way to cast an anti-bullshit spell on Varric's room or something ![]()
Since we're reposting dialogue, I enjoyed this too much not bring it here for anyone who hasn't seen it.
The user Heimdall made this up, but I find it funny -
Cassandra: You know Varric, you really need to work on you descriptions.
Varric: Pardon?
Cassandra: Whenever you start describing caves or mines, they all sound exactly the same.
Varric: Hey, I'm a surface dwarf. If you want someone to wax poetic about a dank, dark, uncomfortable cave, go to Orzammar.

That was one of my favorite quests in that game. I wonder how he would tell it...
Do you think he'd do Aveline a favor and make the story super romantic and suave or would he play up the awkwardness for laughs?

Hahaha ! I would love it because we'd know the truth of how much Aveline failed.
"What do you think about swords?!" Haha

Ah, that mission hurt me. x.x Something about watching someone fail so awkwardly projects onto me and makes me feel just as awkward haha. I wouldn't mind a Varric remix of it, though, those are always way more fun. xD

I would be fine with either personally. Both versions sound like they would be nice to hear. Maybe depending on our personality he'd tell us different versions? ![]()
I think that would be asking too much I suppose. Though if I had to choose...it would have to be the awkward version. Seems like there would be more humour in that version.

One of my favorite moments with Varric is when you give him the Tethras Family Ring and his dailogue then with Sarcastic Hawke.
Oh, and when you talk to Sebastian in Act 3, and Varric says "Hawke said Diplomatically/Sarcastically/Aggressively"
And then goes "Hawke said in an angry aside to the dwarf"
Ahh Varric
So great.

But I bring Varric pretty much everywhere unless I'm trying to hear a specific banter or something haha

This is still my little favorite bit of dialogue. I can see him employing this kind of dark humor more often now, since life has banged him up more since the end of DA2. Bela and Varric have really a lighthearted tone in their voices, which makes one of my favorite moments of gallows humor in DA2:
