If they wanted to give Human protagonists a bonus, they'll probably make Viv and Varric romancable to Humans as well. Dunno if that's on the table tho.
Why would they want to give human protagonists a bonus?

It's possible, I see Viv possibly being Human and Qunari only. But if they wanted to make Varric available to Humans it wouldn't be hard. Since we really only have the one line as opposing evidence.

This is another possible knock against it, I'm not sure if Humans really need more options. I'm not opposed to it if they decide to go with it, but I doubt Humans will be locked out of pretty much anything as it is.

I really doubt any of the LI's would be gated against humans. Besides Varric calls Hawke beautiful more times than he says he's not into humans.

With the idea that most people play Humans. I don't know if it'll happen but then again I would've never guessed they'd make DA2 Human only. Pure speculation.

I don't recall him calling Hawke beautiful... when was that?
I don't recall him calling Hawke beautiful... when was that?
During one of the first conversations you have with him while you're discussing the Deep Roads he'll say
"You're in luck, I'm always willing to talk about myself to beautiful women."
He has another line later in the game, "You're beautiful, deadly, and hang out with fantastic dwarves. It would be a crime if people didn't talk about you."
Yup. This is what I use my freakishly good memory for these days, memorizing video game quotes. Good for me.

The first time you speak to him in the Hanged Man he'll say there's nothing he likes better then somethingsomething and talking to beautiful women? Something like that...

From a story-telling aspect I could see Varric only being gated against qunari. I really don't take that jokey line from DA2 to mean he's not into humans. He's just not into Hawke or just not ready for a relationship during the DA2 game.
Since it's not a technical problem but a story one it doesn't have to be fair or add up nicely in terms of gating.
The ideal for me would be Vivi - qunari + humans and varric - elves + dwarfs. But it could end up being Varric humans, elves and dwarfs with Vivi only being into humans.
Yes that's unfair to the qunari players, but as I said; it doesn't have to be fair to make sense as a story aspect.

What does he say to male Hawke?
What does he say to male Hawke?
No clue. I never played a male Hawke. I picked up the "high maintenance" one from seeing it on youtube a long time ago. I can look it up if you give me a bit. ![]()
Found it!
If Varric is gated, this is what I figure.
Qunari--Maybe. I'm of two minds about this.
I'm going to do some more research on the effects of PTSD, but I wouldn't be surprised if Varric's got a mild case of it due to the Qunari. Not to the levels that apparently Iron Bull's story arc is getting into, but I think it's still there for Varric. My husband recommended a couple of documentaries about that. I know of vets of wars as well as victims of terrorist attacks that don't hate every member of the aggressor's group, and might have friends with them after the conflict. The ones that are shell shocked don't typically feel romantically attracted to the group, although there are exceptions of course.
I don't think he'd actively be racist towards any Qunari. I don't think he's changed that much; I can't see Varric hating ever single member of any group just because of how they were born. Perhaps very cautious, leery, but not hating every member of the race. I also think the gate might happen, but not just because of Kirkwall. Remember, Tallis was of the Qun and thanks to her, he found himself battling a wyvern and almost starting a huge political SNAFU. So far, the ways of the Qun have come back to bite him in the arse twice. We all know that our Qunari isn't of the Qun and I'm pretty sure we can tell Varric as such. That doesn't mean that the association would ever entirely go away. Combine the two and I don't see how a romantic attraction would work.
On the other hand, this would be the perfect time for a romance arc with a Qunari Quizzy, who teaches him that not all Qunari are born of the Qun. That helps him overcomes his mistrust of every member of the Qunari race, as well as his past with Bianca. Talk about an awesome battle couple. Just be standing there, she would have an expression that reads as, "Just try it," with a look from Varric like, "Oh please do. Bianca was getting bored."
I think the romance would also look lovely, especially thanks to the "One Size Fits All" fanart that Aimo did.
Human--I really doubt this one. I didn't even know about the "not into humans line," until after I started posting full time back in November. I had never done the Merrill romance and to this day, I've done it only once on my only male Hawke. That seems awfully obscure to put it in one conversation in one part of the dialogue tree during an entire romance arc. I figure that Hawke was being enough of a jerk to hit on Varric in front of their lover, so Varric was trying to be a gentleman. Considering, you know, Merrill was standing right in the room at the time. ![]()
That's just what I figure, anyhow.
Was this the conversation about how Varric's PTSD might get in the way of him becoming genuinely attracted to a Qunari?
Also, a thought, what if he's not romanceable by the Inquisitor, but it is possible for him to form a deep loving relationship with one of our other companions?
You know, I'd be okay with that if that really was the case. At least the poor guy could finally move on and we would still get to see the character develop. He deserves love, even if the player can't be the one to give it to him. So that's still a win for me. My love of the character is deeper than my love of romancing him. ![]()
So theirs a decent chance of him not being gated for Humans, neat.

Cheers he says "you may not be my best dressed or cleanest friend Master Hawke" instead of the "you're beautiful and deadly" one. Just looked it up. Can't find the other one though, which discussion does it happen during?
Oh, and we're now passed the Josephine thread.
Cheers he says "you may not be my best dressed or cleanest friend Master Hawke" instead of the your beautiful deadly one. Just looked it up.
Okay good. I was struggling to find the first one that he says during "A Business Discussion".
This is something weird I just noticed while trying to look up the "you're in luck I'm always willing to talk about myself to beautiful women" line:
I watched bits of a bunch of Let's Play of Dragon Age 2 to find it but I noticed that the only people who were really talking to Varric were people playing a female Hawke. Everyone I saw playing a male Hawke didn't pick the Investigate options, just kind of breezed through the conversations. Considering it's an "Investigate" option that leads the the response it's making it very difficult.

So it is the business discussion, good to know. I do have a male Hawke, wonder if I have a save for him that early in the game.

Neat theory! I can get into that if Qunari are restricted from him because of that. Although at the same time it does make me want to romance him as a Qunari even more. I just hope they handle any gating in a believable way, instead of "lol too tall nope nope nope".
One thing I need to add though, when Varric says he's not into humans, Hawke isn't flirting with him. Hawke is actually hitting on Merrill, which really changes the context of the line if you catch my meaning. It always seemed to me more like he was playing wingman than anything else.
Here's the scene if you all are curious
I never come on this thread so I don't know if this has been posted or how many times it may have been posted but it made me giggle. ![]()

Dat GIF is awesome. Posted a million times, possibly.
Anyway, in case anyone is interested in numbers.

Here's the scene if you all are curious
See to me this comes across that he's clearly joking. The whole sentence is being exaggerated for the fun factor
I'm still of the opinion that Hawke just wasnt his type. I have a few friends who I flirt outrageously with because we're not interested in each other at all and its fun
Exactly. Just because you're friends with someone for a long time doesn't mean you're going to end up in a relationship.
I don't understand why it's hard for so many people to grasp the idea that maybe, just maybe, Varric simply wasn't into Hawke. Aveline wasn't into Hawke either.
Yeah, looking at it again. It's likely this was meant in a joking way.

It sounded to me like he was trying to do what he did a lot for Merrill by that point in the game: Try to cheer her up. It could be a way to dodge the hinted flirt (which he certainly does...a lot,) as well as try to give a pretty friend a compliment. By this point, he was already starting to get a little worried about Merrill and he was always protective of her.
I really want to bring back that Harry Met Sally thing I mentioned earlier, if a turned down Hawke realizes Varric is in a romance. LOL
"All this time I thought he didn't want to get married. But, the truth is, he didn't want to marry me."
