Further thoughts into the Varricmance situation from Former Fiend:

 

But I shouldn't have to go through a specific race to romance a specific character. That's a limit on the stories I can tell as the player. Let's say Varric's romanceable only to dwarf females as some have predicted; the the only romance story you can tell with Varric is dwarf/dwarf. You can't tell the dwarf/elf story. You can't tell the dwarf/human story. You can't tell the dwarf/qunari story. The only option you've given the player is dwarf/dwarf. 

 

That's one of my main problems; that it limits us. 

 

Continuing with this example, I think it adds more to Varric's character that he was using the "I'm not into humans" line to cover his lingering feelings for Bianca rather than actually not being into humans. The former shows the struggle of a man who can't let go of his past and is letting his life slip through his fingers while holding onto a memory. The latter shows a man who doesn't like women taller than him. Those two options do not give an equal amount of character depth.

I think you're problem is more with the devs then Varric. It seems likely he'll be gated, but I still think he'll be open to Elves. Just dwarves would be a bit to limited.

Oh, my problem is absolutely with the devs.

 

Truthfully I don't have an opinion on the likelyhood of Varric being a romance. I'd like him to be, not because I have any interest in romancing him, but just to see something different, something that hasn't been done before. 

 

I had originally placed that post in the race gating thread and used Varric as a dwarf-only as an example because it is a suggestion I have seen many times.

I'm still of the opinion that they should of made Sigrun a companion in DA:O over Oghren. She was such an awesome character and would of made for an interesting romance.

 

Yeah, she would have made such a more interesting companion even without the romance. Oghren was very forgettable to me, but she wasn't.

I liked Oghren well enough I suppose, I just liked Sigrun more.

Sounds like a good idea, you only get one chance at a first playthrough after-all. I've already had plenty of games spoiled for me in the past & I've finally learned my lesson. So, this time I'm being extra cautious especially since DA is one of my favorite series...

Oghren was pretty cool pre-DAA. But they Flanderized him to a point that he's annoying and no longer funny.

 

Sigrun was a great character, I think Bioware knows that, along with Nathaniel but due to the risk that they can die in DAA, and the fact they admit to retconning Anders and Leliana's potential deaths, they played it safe by not bringing them back.

 

But if the Dragon Age Keep system works out, I think they could make them optional companions in a fourth or fifth incarnation of Dragon Age.

Sounds like a good idea, you only get one chance at a first playthrough after-all. I've already had plenty of games spoiled for me in the past & I've finally learned my lesson. So, this time I'm being extra cautious especially since DA is one of my favorite series...

I just worry about someone spoiling the Main antagonist, and I have a feeling theirs going to be at least one major plot twist in there as well.
