Heterosexual Male (that typical WASP, basically, expect I'm german and too young to really count) and No Idea. My best Friend is gay, I have no Problem with him.

 

Sometimes, though, I suspect it is because I don't feel I can authentically roleplay a homosexual Character.

 

That seems like a reasonable sentiment. There was a bit of a kerfuffle on the Sera thread awhile back because a lesbian user was unsure how well a straight male could write a gay woman, so certainly the concern's something that exists.

Ah, okay, that makes sense.  I'm in a cautious but hopeful mood.  The sudden attention that Varric's been receiving from BioWare has got my hopes up (ugh, thanks for that BW, I was trying to avoid getting too hopeful) and it looks extremely promising.  

 

However, and I hate to be the downer this time, we have to try to keep those expectations in check.  While I still believe that Varric is in except for the official announcement, we have to be prepared for disappointment.  

 

So, let's try to keep our hopes high but tempered.  I will never stop thinking that the devs would have let us down by now.  May I not be wrong.

Ah...! I thought that was a lovely picture of Varric before, but not that it's associated with the quote there's something very elegant and wistful about the whole thing. It's a very nice sort of elegance. I picture staring up at the castle with a sad smile on his face and a determined look in his eye, background music muted and nothing else to be heard but the wind blowing in the leaves and the birds chirping in the trees... it's all sort of romantic in a way.

Yeah, same here.  That why the DA team finally got my hopes to really rise about this.  I no longer feel optimistic, I feel almost certain.  That scares me a little, because if I isn't a LI, that will increase my disappointment.

Melancholy that the word I was looking for! Kinda stumbled around it with wistful and elegant... though it is those things too.

I think that's a reasonable concern. Not that I would automatically discount the romance or anything.

Thinking about it, I felt like Traynor's romance came off as something a straight guy would write (she was written by Patrick Weekes, just looked it up after writing that). You know. Lesbian shower sex scene. Lesbian hot tub sex scene.

The entire asari race also came across that way too.

Playing a rogue, a "mundie" with a sense of CG, is what that's like for me.  I could empathize with Varric and Isabela at the end of Act 3.  I didn't want mages and templars to start slaughtering each other.  I sure as hell didn't like being forced to pick a side.  I think get why the writers did it, which was to show once again that Hawke really was a pawn and had little control over things when all was said and done.  

 

I could see where both groups where coming from, and I didn't want anything to do with it.  I just wanted to get Bethany, get my friends, fight whom I had to, and get the hell outta dodge.

Remember, they know he's popular, they know he's wanted, and they regretted not doing it before.  We can pull out the "Wah-wah-waaah" noise when they confirm he's not.  Until then, what Natashina said, reproduced in some sigs.

My mages that romanced Anders, not so much.  However, my rogues?  That was the last thing they wanted.  The only reason why I kept going mage really, other than the game forcing me to pick a side, is because of Bethany.  As a mage, I always put Carver in the Wardens, so I knew he'd be safe.

Basically, there has been more screenshots of Varric and a fairly recent VA video.  BW is giving Varric way more attention over the last day or so, so hopes are high.

You know this picture also makes me want to call Varric beautiful in the game, and not mean it as a joke. I've always wanted to call a potential male LI beautiful, I always find it very romantic in movies with a guy's love interest refers to him that way... beauty is so often associated with the feminine, but it can be a masculine feature as well.

I think like DA2, Varric isn't going to care about whether you choose templars or mages, as long as you don't have many innocents sacrificed in the process.
