I'm very tempted to contact the artist and ask for permission to use that avatar. It's just so gorgeous.
Okay, since we're all unabashed Varric fans here, what was it that made you fall for the guy? I think he had me at "Varric Tethras, at your service."
Since my first Warden was a dwarf, I was left thinking, "Where the hell were you in Origins? I had to put up with Oghren for the game and for the expansion. I had given up on any non-stereotypical dwarves becoming party members. Now here you are. Pretty late than never, and it's nice to see in my party, finally. Hello lovely, my aren't you a stunning dwarf...
"
At first, his voice.
I love that dude's voice. Bloom does awesome work with him. Not just the voice in general, but his tone. He tells a story even when he's not meaning to, he so expressive haha.
But what really got me was over the course of the game when you really get to see more of his personality. I have a soft spot for those who deflect their feelings with humor. I just want to hug him, you can tell he has problems but he never puts them on anyone. he just wants to make people laugh or entertain them. :3
I love Varric he's my favorite character in Dragon Age. I love him because he breaks every Dwarven stereotype. Instead loud and rambunctious, he's calm, cool and collected. Instead of sporting a ridiculously long beard, he's sporting chest hair. He'd rather talk than fight and sit back and tell stories albeit exaggerated and unrealistic. He's very snarky, It's very fun playing as a Sarcastic Hawke and engaging Varric in a snark to snark combat. There's not one conversation in which Varric makes me laugh with his wit. Aside from defying every Dwarven cliche and humor, what drew me to Varric's character, is his fierce loyalty to his friends. He would do anything for them, for example Varric pays off guards in order for them keep attacking Anders and Merril. While we're on the subject of Merrill, he often drops meat on her doorstep because she keeps forgetting to eat as she works on the mirror. I could say more, but I need more time to gather my thoughts. All in all Varric is a great character and I'm looking forward to see his role in Inquistion!
I'm reposting my open letter to the DA team from the old Varric thread, with some edits.

All of these! Theres honestly NOTHING about Varric that I dislike. He is my favorite character in Dragon Age. The way he's written, his voice, his looks, his personality, his story, just...EVERYTHING has me loving Varric. He's been the character I've anticipated the most coming into Dragon Age Inquisition and nothing has changed that!
I was around when the first smirky faced concept art that was released and the Varric fandom first exploded.
Before that, dwarves weren't trendy yet since they were stereotyped to be the bushy bearded drunk kinds in most lores.
My first playthrough was as a Dwarf Noble, admirer and knight Gorim was so dashing and loyal! Unfortunately, due to certain events, we all know he ended up fleeing to the surface, with some injuries and settled down with a surfacer to become a merchant.
"DWARVEN CRAFTS!"
In the Commoner playthrough, it is implied Leske (also Brian Bloom, but with a huskier, more scoundrel approach) and the player had a fling, though apparently his performance wasn't impressive, based on the insult thrown at him.
So anyway, back on topic, the mystery of this dwarf with an abundance of chesthair, smirking on a stone throne, drew me in.
"Who is this dwarf?" I wondered "and why am I so attracted to him?"
Then DA2 was released and wow, he did NOT disappoint.
Except for the fact that he isn't an LI back then!
I always played sarcastic!hawke (with some exceptions here and there), so it didn't hurt that the way I played the game gave me the BEST relationship with him possible. We rolled jokes off each-other and laughed all the dang time. Just his relationship with my character gave me a super soft spot for him. He was my Hawke's ultimate best friend.

I also love how they seem to be adding a sympathetic aspect to him in DA: I. He seems to want to save as many people as he can judging from the pax demo we saw.

That's when it went from, "Oh, this guy is cute," to "I really hope I can romance my best bud in the next game." I married my best friend RL and we have a great time being smartasses together, which is something I would love to see in a Dragon Age game. Varric just fits the bill for me. I still don't have any real hope he'll be a LI, but I'll help keep the candles burning until the devs tell us that Varric is not happening.
I also did not romance anyone in DA2. The only people I liked were Varric and Aveline. I liked Isabela but in more of a buddy way.
And if he is not an LI, he's still going to be glued to my party because well...Varric! Hawke doesn't need to be his only best friend. He and my Dwarf Quizzy (Who will no doubt be my first play through) will be best friends too! Haha

Recently, I just did all the romances in DA2, with Merrill being the LI for my (first in the DA series) male character. It wasn't bad, but I am a glutton for punishment. My favorite is...Anders. Please don't shoot me! I'm not going to start a debate about him, but he's the character that I tend to romance the most.
For too many years, I did too many "forever alone" characters in BW games. I didn't care for Amoen in BG2; didn't even know about Genn in NWN for years, and I played that game at least a dozen times; outright laughed at the paladin choice in NWN2 (seriously, a CG tiefling with a paladin??) never touched the Bishop mod because his CE arse wasn't any better.
I also never played KotOR or Jade Empire. I just missed those on my radar. I tried KotOR recently, but the graphics are at a weird in between-generation stage that hasn't aged very well, and I wasn't able to get into the game.
So far, the Garrus romance in ME2-ME3 has remained my favorite, but it's the whole "dearest friend-turned-lover" arc that keeps me hooked. In the DA series, it's been Leliana so far, mainly because I felt like her friendship was woven in decently to the romance arc.

Now, this is a story all about how
My chest hair got flipped-turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute
not long, that’s all
tellin you how I became the dwarf of the town called Kirkwall
Up on the surface, born and raised
In a tavern was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
Chasin’ stray nugs outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom was all
“You're goin with Bartrand to the city Kirkwall.”
Anders? Me too.... *sympathizing hug* You'll find no judgement from me.
The only other person I've romanced in DA2 was Isabela.
While I don't judge you Anders lovers, I have only romanced him once (-cough- and that Playthrough is in the abyss of Act three unfinished).
I tend to romance Isabela and Fenris. Isabela the most , but if I had Varric...well... you know.

The only other person I've romanced in DA2 was Isabela, and that was only once or twice.
Anders is awesome, I only romanced Merrill in DA2.

That was beautiful. Here's an image of an overly excited kid (and one of my favorite Pixar movies):

Do you come up with these on the spot? Because you're awesome.
Queen Aimo all the way.

I totally had him planned to be glued to my party... but then everyone else was reveal and also looked awesome, and I can't pair him with any of the rogues because I'll be playing a rogue, and that'd make for a super unbalanced party. I really really want to take him around with Cole, I think they'd have some pretty cute conversations, but I won't be able to use that party for anything but the most benign missions because I'm a firm believer in having a tank and a healer with you at all times (though I could respect a mage or a rogue to tank, there is the Night Enchanter spec.)
