I go back and forth about whether I'm a die-hard romantic or not a romantic at all, and it's mostly because of how other people see romance. I think love is great, and it's difficult, and it's partly great because it's difficult and yet so very, very worth it. Some people think love is great, and it's all swooning and gentle kisses and always thinking exactly like your partner. I think the Varric/Bianca romance has mostly been quiet longing and not much actual substance, and if you're part of the second group that's pretty much perfect. Not so much for me.

 

Edit: This post might be kind of dickish. I still think it's true.

Nah your post doesn't sound Dickish at all, just an opinion. I'm personally just not all that into the "lovers reuniting after years of separation" trope, people can change so much over several years, and the trope hardly ever deals with these changes.

Wow I didn't even look at the username, Rhea was the name of just about all my pokemon trainers for awhile. Fond memories of that name I have.

 

Wouldn't it be great if we could upgrade one of the commerce/political keeps to sell Inquisition souvenirs, I bet Varric would be totally into that I imagine he'd want to be in charge of the designing the plushies .

Good, I'm glad. And I agree that people can change a lot over ten years. I won't say you couldn't do it right, but with Bianca as an NPC rather than a party member, I'm not sure they could address that change well without dragging the game to a halt.

Why do I suddenly have an image of Varric standing behind a stall, trying and succeeding to sell friend fiction to the inquisition soldiers and the locals.

Good, I'm glad. And I agree that people can change a lot over ten years. I won't say you couldn't do it right, but with Bianca as an NPC rather than a party member, I'm not sure they could address that change well without dragging the game to a halt.

A lot of it would be in the background, and I'd rather my favorite companion's story arc not revolve around romance drama. Aveline was cool because it was adorable, but romantic drama isn't that fun to deal with, especially if you secretly want to get with one half of the couple. Now Varric getting dragged into Carta drama because of his past with Bianca would be rather interesting .

Aveline was cool because it was adorable, but romantic drama isn't that fun to deal with, especially if you secretly want to get with one half of the couple. Now Varric getting dragged into Carta drama because of his past with Bianca would be rather interesting . 

 

I thought Aveline's romance arc worked because it started with a clean slate, more or less. You kinda had to deal with her feelings about Wesley, but that had more to do with Aveline herself than with her relationship with Donnic, and it was handled pretty well in her personal arcs. With Donnic she had one quick flirty exchange, and she had off-screen time. That was plenty.

 

With Varric and Bianca, though, there's a lot of baggage that needs to get wrapped up before they can have a believable romance. Taking care of it off-screen just seems narratively lazy, and dealing with it on-screen is time-consuming as hell. Not to mention, yeah, romance drama, a lot of people don't want to wade through that crap.

D'awww thank you, for the headcanon and the compliment. I love the idea of your inquisitor reading excerpts from his books to amuse him That's pretty adorable. Sounds like Varric's learned the fine art of the puppy eyes . My Inquisitor would be too busy trying to encourage the other companions to reenact scenes from the books to actually out of them .

I see my saarabas as having the leader of leaders, warrior woman thing about her.  My Dalish mage is going to be certain of her people's extinction and attempt to ease them into it by romancing Iron Bull.  Haven't decided on my dwarf rogue, other than romancing her to Varric.

 

It would be neat if Bianca represented Varric's past and darkness, while the romancing PC represent his future and brightness.  Perhaps the romances are a bit too subtle, and while one can raise his approval back up, it doesn't change the fact you let the village burn, and he hasn't forgotten that...

 

Such things would make it difficult to talk Varric out of siding with Bianca.

 

Or, more heart-stabbingly, what if the crossbianca is symbolically destroyed?
