Just did Varric's companion quest and I have a question for y'all. Did you kill or spare Bartrand? I had Anders heal him and it felt wrong for my Hawke to kill him after that...I still don't like either choice myself.

They're both fairly terrible, yes.

It depends on which Hawke I'm playing - I generally lean toward sparing him, though.

I let Varric decide and he shot him. It was his brother so it didn't feel right for me to decide. I can understand why he did it, it's just no life to be incapacitated like that forever. It's still very sad though.

That could work. I'd kind of rather Varric made the choice to stay with you, though, since I'm picturing a conversation of, "Well, Inquisitor, should I go back to my girlfriend?" and I can't see any way to do it that wouldn't just be horribly awkward. But yeah, maybe if Bianca showed up late in the game, and he decided to break it off with her dependent on whether he was with you at the time? Or something? I dunno, I'll admit it still kind of sets my teeth on edge.

Me too... I'm hoping it won't be too awkward, whatever happens. I have demons to fight, I can't handle too much drama on top of that... But I can handle a little if done well.

@twilight- I have playthroughs of both... Wasn't sure which option was better really :/

I usually spare him, but it's a tough one.

I kept Bartrand alive- perhaps I drew from my experience as a sibling, but I didn't think I could ever deliver such a permanent punishment to a family member, especially when he wasn't well. And I wouldn't let Varric keep the red lyrium chip (I didn't want him to go coco) - did anyone else?

Definitely didn't let him keep the red lyrium. That was an easy choice.

Do you think letting him have the red lyrium will make that big of a difference in inquisition?

I kept him alive, then gave the idol to Sandal because I didn't want to risk Varric going crazy like his brother.

EDIT: Whoa, looks like alot of you chose to not let Varric keep the idol as well...

I killed him in my main playthrough, if that makes you feel better.

In my Warrior World - of course, Varric was a Friend - I had Anders heal Bartrand and gave him the Lyrium Idol. Why? Because he wanted it, that's why.

I can't play a Hawke without a ... questionable Judge of Character.

In my Mage World - where Varric was the only friend besides Merrill - I killed Bartrand and didn't give him the Idol. Why? Because Hawke was an Ass, that's why.

I spared him on my canon playthrough. After the sad talk he has with Varric after Anders heals him I just couldn't kill him. And there's no way I'm letting Varric keep the shard of craziness after everything that happened.

I spared Bartrand for Varric's sake, even though death seemed more merciful... Also, I gave Varric the idol, which is something a lot of people in this thread didn't do. xD; I may change it in The Keep.

I'm wondering about it myself... It's seems to be too much effort to make him different for whole game but maybe it will make a difference in crucial moment.

I did both, though I think killing him is the kinder outcome- I still don't like either outcome.

I didn't  let Varric keep the Idol either.

I was like your already half way to crazy town just by holding the thing so noooooooooooo way are you keeping it bud.

No WAY was Varric keeping the shard. I also had to say no to Merrill just now which resulted in 115 rival points 0_o. First time I've done this. *Sigh* hate me if you must Daisy but I know you end up killing your clan and the keeper (who I like) with your demon mirror if I let you have the tool.

I never let him keep the lyrium shard. But it'll be interesting to see the repercussions in DAI.

I'm honestly a little surprised at this! The majority of players I've talked to have always chosen to kill Bartrand/give Varric idol. Guess I'm not such a special snowflake afterall...*weeps bitterly*

Was it really that many rivalry points?! I said no to her too, but all I really remember is her yelling at me and saying she hated me.

I was honestly just weak against Varric and didn't want him to dislike me. *sigh*

Will do... I feel like I should have at least one playthrough where I don't change anything so I can see the true consequences of my actions, so it will probably happen... even though it's scary. And The Keep makes it so tempting to easily fix that. xD

As I understand it, if you're on the Friendship path with Merrill and you don't help her fix the mirror, you go from Friendship X to Rivalry X-15. So if you have Friendship 80, suddenly you drop to Rivalry 65. Which is a ton of points, when you get right down to it.

I have a Hawke who gave Varric the shard, but he's pretty low on my list of characters to continue. One of us will see it eventually, I'm sure.
