Not in DA2 but from what I've read about the characters in Inquisition I could easily see myself becoming a IB/Varric shipper.
Well, now.Edit: Y'know what, never mind. This didn't need to be brought up again.
So, we brought up Fenris/Anders shipping, and we've mentioned shipping DAI companions before. Anyone here ship Varric with a different companion? Just curious.

Heh! Hadn't even thought of that match-up.
I'd kind of like to see Dorian and Varric flirt. Not seriously, not meaning much, just the two of them riffing off one another.

By the way, I think it's so funny Varric seems to be the only rivalry that's pointless. All the other ones are about being a friend by disagreeing with the character's views or actions. But from what I could gather, being Varric's rival seems to be about Varric thinking you're a horrible human being? Did any of you do the rivalry?

Not in DA2 but hopefully that changes in DAI. I know some people hate them, but I like companion pairings.

I've done it myself. From what I remember it's not... quite as bad as you might think. You're not so much an irredeemable jerk as you're someone who's aggressive and blunt. Granted, you can get a ton of rivalry points by being a stab-happy lunatic, but that's true of most of the companions.
On the other hand, you're not changing Varric for the better or really challenging him, so it is fairly pointless, yes.

But I'm curious that you mentioned Isabela's rivalry - I think she gets the same development in both paths, just in one you are nice to her and in the other you pester her about everything she does. I thought it was more like Fenris, in that he reached the same destination by different paths.

Ah thanks, so it's not as extreme but it boils down to him disagreeing with you and not being affected by it. Very different from other paths.

She changes a bit for rivalry at the end. When you're doing her final quest with Castillon, for friendship you let the slaver go free in exchange for the ship but for rivalry you kill the slaver. It's been a while but I believe that if you do rivalry she reluctently says that she feels like you've done the right thing. So she changes a bit.Yeah, I haven't done it. I was trying to see if there was any point in it but what are you even disagreeing with Varric about? His idea that you shouldn't be a huge jerk?

I rivalled Varric once to see what it was like, but felt so bad that I reloaded. There nothing like Varric basically telling you that your a git, to bring on a guilt trip the size of Thedas. it's pretty pointless.

Pretty much. I should say that I've only done this once, and the character was kind of a jerk but that wasn't where most of the rivalry came from. So I might be remembering this wrong. But yeah, you get a lot of rivalry from being bloodthirsty in conversation... but not more bloodthirsty than you'd expect from your typical blade-for-hire (which, let's face it, is mostly what Hawke is). So it didn't seem that extreme.
Laidlaw tweeted that a qunari mage won't have Circle training either.
I wonder where they got training then.
Maybe the Vashoth have a thriving society? That could be interesting, and they might hide their mages from the Templars as a matter of course.

Hmm, but you can give her the ship in both paths and you can kill the guy in both. If you don't give her the ship in friendship she tells you getting a ship doesn't seem important anymore. So she's not even reluctant about your being right.

Here, it says in the wiki that if you're in rivalry with her and kill the slaver she will "admit that her choices have hurt people" and that it's tough for her to "see the consequences of her actions but she will try for Hawke." http://dragonage.wik..._(Isabela_Act_3)Hmm, but you can give her the ship in both paths and you can kill the guy in both. I do like how many of the rivalry path were mostly about the characters learning to look more closely at their actions and choices. Maybe that's why Varric wasn't romanceable, he was too perfect to have a rivalry path

According to Gaider, they considered him, but they didn't think he had enough conflict in his personal arc.
So... pretty much that, yeah.

Never thought I'd say this but as of now I'm kind of glad he wasn't an LI in DA2 because it's allowed him to join us on another adventure. Also Gaider posted this the other day on his tumblr. Maybe I'm crazy but because he won't directly say "no" I'm taking this as a yes. http://dgaider.tumbl...in-regards-to-aAccording to Gaider, they considered him, but they didn't think he had enough conflict in his personal arc.

Mmm. The thing about Gaider that I think everyone should keep in mind - he tends to get annoyed when people make assumptions, so he's always careful to point out when people shouldn't. I don't really read that one way or the other, just him saying, "If Varric isn't a romance option - AND I'M NOT SAYING HE'S NOT" because you know damn well if he didn't say that, people would assume Varric isn't.
Edit: But I agree, having him not available in DA2 is worth getting to spend time with him in another game.

Yep! I had a conversation about that with Ajna, and she mentioned how she felt like Varric was having a bad time, and that was good for us, and how she felt kind of bad thinking about it that way. I pretty much had to agree with her. But it is a really good sign, yeah.
