I adored Jacob very much. I was so sad that I could not complete ME3.

I started as a mainstream hater and a Garrus fangirl but after the Jacob romance (you have to do a "Zevran" on him by rejecting his first advances for him to share his feelings) I was sold.

I hope Varric's romance is complicated but well-executed like that.

I'm so glad that I had no interest in romancing Jacob.  Not only did I do a "wait for Liara" session my first time in ME2, but I romanced Garrus the second.  Jacob is also the name of one of my little brothers, so that put him immediately off the table.

I didn't know Liara was a romance option the first time.

But after that <3

I'll give it a try then. I never hear anything positive about Jacob except laughter from the prize.

The Jacob fangirls are a niche/hipster community. We are REALLY small.

Jacob was a stable non-stereotype but they HAD to destroy it. >:-(

Basically when he says "but the prize" Shep has to clarify that she wants more from the relationship. He then lets her know that he loves her. And then we get to see his well-rendered body. Sexytime.

I think it's messed up that they only had one LI cheat on Shep, and it happened to be Jacob.

The women who wanted to romance men had few choices to begin with, killing Thane off, making Jacob cheat....

That left Kaidan or Garrus..

and if you're like me Kaidan is doomed to never make it to me2&3

So that leaves Garrus!

I agree. It's my Second favorite. But, I also didn't like they made it so you can only continue it from me2.

It would have been the same for Jacob, that's true but they demolished it completely so. Yeah.

Back to Varric; Since I'm hopeful that he's an LI is everyone still keeping their preferred races to romance him. Or are they considering the possible race gating?

I just love that they added three romances for straight women in ME2, then took away two of them in ME3.  One cheats and the other dies?  Not like I didn't see the latter happening any other way (I did laugh at those that said, "OMG, WHY DIDN'T BIOWARE SAVE HIM!",) but still...  <mind blown>

Garrus had a pretty awesome romance though.

I've been playing ME3 off and on over the last couple of weeks (for the second time,) and I started ME2 to kick off the Garrus romance.  It's refreshing realistic in a BioWare game, all things considered.

RIGHT? That's what I'm saying.

Right now the speculation is Varric is race-gated to dwarves, so my first PC is a saarbas and the second will be a dwarf.  Cullen gets the the qunari mage so Varric can tease him, Varric gets the dwarf rogue.

I'll be disappointed if he's gated, but at least I have a backup plan.

RIGHT? That's what I'm saying.

I didn't realize how easily straight women could put themselves into a "forever alone" session against their will in ME3 until I played it and noticed that Thane and Jacob were no longer available.  As a pansexual woman, I didn't have nearly as much room for complaints, so I felt pretty lucky there.

If Varric is a romance, then he is definitely my first playthrough... no other options! If not, then its between Sera and Cullen... TOO HARD TO DECIDE

I put two new party banters concerning Varric's opinion on Cullen romancing my saarbas on the party banter thread.

I think it's very likely that he's race-gated to reduce the height awkwardness.

I personally feel like height should NEVER be a problem in real life but if the writers are maintaining mainstream values they'll probably limit him to dwarven girls.

I may be curious about the Qunari but I adore Dwarves so if he's racegated I don't mind playing Dwarf first.

At this rate, if Varric isn't available, I'm going to have to get to know the personalities of the cast in the games before I decide on a romance.

I have no interest in Sera yet (she reminds me of some women in my past that crushed my heart;) Dorian is going to be my second or third quizzy for the m/m, but no go for my first toon; I like Cullen as a character, but I think his looks are just too generic "blonde haired pretty boy" for my taste; Cassandra is straight and to be honest, I'm not sure if I would roll up a male toon to romance her like I plan on for Dorian.

I'm not going to lose hope if I can't plan my LI in advance.  BioWare continuously surprises me and subverts my expectations, so I'll happily wait and see.  If Varric is available though, I already promised my husband to take the fangirl squeeing outside if he's asleep so I don't wake him up.

My husband is rooting for us, by the way.  He knows with Varric and me, it was damn near love at first sight.   :P

As a really short woman, I agree. Height should not be a problem.

But, I'd probably run a dwarf warrior or rogue for him even if he wasn't racegated. I play warriors more than rogues so , I'd probably try and change it up so I'd be a rogue

I'm in a bind, because I tend to like to do as many call-backs as possible.  If my warden is Dalish, my Hawke romances Merril.  If my warden was a mage, my Hawke romances Anders, if Alistair stayed in the wardens, so does the siblings.  My first playthrough is an Amell, his cousin romanced Anders and sent Carver to the templars.  Therefore, my first impulse is to romance my saarabas (always intended to be female) to romance Cullen, because he knew both the warden and the champion.  It all ties into itself.

...but Varric...

So my second and third playthrough will be a female dwarf commoner and male dwarf nobles, so my second and third playthroughs are likely to have dwarf inquisitors.  If that's the case, one of them will be the lucky lady to make Varric forget all about Bianca.

I was annoyed with the guys we were given in DA2.

In DAO, I loved Zev as well as the origin flames Tamlen (adorbs) and Gorim (so loyal and dashing). Leske was hilarious though. Based on dialogue about "his majesty" failing to show up, they probably had a one night stand or a FwB relationship. He's voiced by Brian Bloom too so it's even funnier in hindsight.

So I might have a thing for scoundrels or sweetness..?

They said that the two with racial preferences will be story-reasoned, which is nice.  I prefer having a story-driven conversation than the option just not coming up.  I'd like my saarabas to be able to hit on Dorian before he puts her down gently.

Hard to say what hurt worse, Gorim saying he'd found another woman or Leske warming Jarvia's bed.

BTW, Someone on Scribbles forum mentioned they may have killed off Zev. : ( Did you see that?

Oh and my Dwarf Commoner took Loghain in so I can't wait to see more Drunk Alistair. That will also be my loveless/rejected-by-Varric SarcastiHawke import for my Catina Cadash (Varric romance) playthrough.
