From the wiki:

"Seekers are typically chosen from the elite ranks of the templars and used to train at isolated fortresses such as Therinfal Redoubt in Ferelden. In their roles as overseers of the Templar Order and the right hand of the Divine, they serve as the Chantry's investigators and are given considerable latitude to function outside the law. The leadership hierarchy of the Seekers runs parallel to that of the templars, although a senior Seeker outranks any templar."

Thanks, Ynqve! I was going to say that Cassandra has worked with templars before, and might have learned from their training in the meantime, but that makes a lot more sense.

It could be the Creation field just got a boost. Almost everyone I've talked to about mages in Dragon Age says they play Spirit Healers as a matter of course, and there were complaints that Anders was the team healer in DA2. Could be the design team wanted to make that more open to players, so people didn't feel forced to play a Spirit Healer/keep the Spirit Healer in the party at all times.

I would really like that! It would make the Creation school more useful and you wouldn't feel obligated to "waste" your specialization just because you don't trust the AI to heal efficiently.

Edit: Or dislike the resident healer

Just asking are you saying you cant play healers in this game or you cant use it to much in the game.

Can't specialize in healing/creation - they took out the creation tree. There will still be some buff spells, but they're limited in different ways

... Wait, they took out the creation tree? How does that work? I know we have Haste spells and those were part of creation in DA2.

I... have to disagree about Blackwall, about it being a fine line. The guy's a Grey Warden, who quit because he wanted to help people and stop focusing on a blight that wasn't happening any time soon, which pretty much screams Champion to me. We've seen no reason to think he's tied to the chantry, and given that Cassandra, Leliana, and Cullen are all working directly for the chantry it'd be pretty odd if they decided to put Blackwall in the same organization. Plus Alistair made it pretty clear that Templars don't usually end up the Grey Wardens.

I do agree that stronger ties to the chantry makes Cassandra a more likely templar.  Come to think of it, while some minor female templar NPCs have been seen (the one that check's Meredith's pulse is definitely female), we haven't had any female templar companions.

Seconded.  I knew healing was harder, but I wasn't expecting THAT.

Perhaps the different specialties have their own method of healing?  Like knight enchanter using something akin to creation or healing wards, rift mage pulls health from the fade, and necromancy leaches it from opponents?

Haste spell is part of the focus mechanic, that functions sort of like some sort of super meter that builds up over time as you um...do things (we have no details yet) maybe like fighting enemies, exploring, and/or time based. It's likely at the moment that healing spells are also using that same mechanic, but this hasn't been confirmed yet.  Just that there is a new mechanic that limits how often you may use healing and other powerful spells.

There was a healing spell or two within the "Spirit Tree".

I suppose makes sense. Wait, does that make all our mage inquisitors spirit healers by default?

I'm confused, they need to spill the beans on specializations and talents...

If you don't mind my asking, Secily, where did you hear that? I've been avoiding spoilers so I'm not surprised I missed it, but I'm trying to figure out what exactly that might mean.

No, there is a difference between a healing spell versus a Spirit Healer. Any mage can learn basic healing, but Spirit Healers are unique in that they can draw power from Spirits to heal the most grievous of injuries.

Except for Merrill.  She doesn't do anything right...  I like her character, but I hate her specialization and lack of healing spells.

The last time they talked about that was 2013 according to google, and it was vague. I probably mixed that somehow... I'm gonna go back and watch the videos for clues

My friend managed to turn Merrill into a pretty amazing tank, became pretty useful if you weren't really feeling either of the warriors for a specific quest.

Yeah. *sigh* I find the idea of different base-spells for companions kind of interesting, but no healing spells whatsoever? Kind of feels like a mistake.

I appreciate it! Let me know if you find anything interesting.

Okay, yeah, Merrill's basically the Arcane Warrior of the game. That's something to keep in mind.

There are other ways to play the game besides just healing. I've never done it, but I've seen some pretty amazing builds without any healing specs for anyone in the party.

Agreed- I'm just hoping mass heal makes a comeback... Of course, with limited potions/not being able to spam potions I really hope I have lots of mana to even use it :/

yeah, it seems like we should all brush up on something like that.  I'm going to be sad to not have a dedicated healer though.  It has been such a lovely crutch.  I'm still confused why they felt that healing (and potions) have to be limited this time around.  Did people complain in mass about the game being too easy?  I know I didn't...

Sure, but it makes you so much more reliant on healing pots. And that's no fun!

Not necessarily, though it can involve a lot of blood magic, she basically had herself and Merril healing themselves constantly via blood magic, made Isabella into a dodge tank, and made Aveline nigh unkillable. It was a pretty entertaining playthrough to watch.

Healers aren't strictly necessary, no, but they're one of the basic building blocks of your typical party. It's one of those things you should probably make a pretty strong effort to include, just because almost everyone is going to want one. Tanks are another.

Having said that, we don't know exactly how this is going to play out. Could be they surprise me, and working with limited healing ratchets up the tension.

Never really needed a healer anyway.  B)
