So I haven't read Until We Sleep (does anyone know where I can?) but I was curious and looked up Varric and Bianca scenes and then I found a scan of this page:

And does anyone else feel like this is just so sad? I'm convinced that Bianca is dead now. (I could be wrong of course, it wouldn't be the first time). And I know we talking about it before but I never saw this page prior. But this is such a sad, sad page and it's in the Fade. I'm almost done listening to The Calling on audio book and as we see in DAO, all the characters go into the Fade and are tempted with the one thing that they can never have again. All of them involve lost loves or family members who are DEAD. (The only character who isn't being tempted by the Fade is instead being tortured with her most terrible memories... of someone who is also dead.)

 

Also the line 'Names have power- give a thing a name and it's yours forever.' That's probably why Varric named his crossbow Bianca in the first place, because he wasn't ready to let go. The only reason I can see now that Varric won't be a LI is that he still isn't over her and is set on carrying that burden for the rest of this life. Which would be tremendously tragic but when I think "man that sucks," all I can think of is Aveline saying no one can tell you when to move on.

It is a scene from the fade so you can't really trust anything about it other than bianca is a real person varic cared about now if she cared about him or if they were lovers who knows.

I think Bianca is still alive and Varric left her in order to protect her.

Again, I've been listening to Dragon Age books on audio book and I just had the most amusing thought.... I want to hear Hard in High town on audio... And can Brain Bloom pleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaassssssse read it to me?

thank you for posting this. I haven't read the Comics either, but this is actually quite good insight.

 

Personally, that Page gives me the Feeling that Bianca is alive but consciously left him. He realizes it's fake, when he asks, if she would be always his and answers positively. That this Answer tips him off implies to me that something she had done led to them not being together anymore.

According to Gerav's wiki:

Once defeated, Varric revealed that Gerav wanted to design a repeating crossbow, and that Bianca was the only one that worked.

 

So maybe Bianca designed it, but Gerav made it?

Now I'm about to go on a tangent... but you bring up a good point about her answering positively. What if Bianca broke his heart and left him... and then maybe died? Maybe? Hmm.. actually if she left him, I'm not certain Varric would name a crossbow (that he adores) after a woman who broke his heart. But maybe there's it was like Game of Thrones (SPOILER)

Where Jon Snow and Ygritte are in love but then they were torn apart by different loyalties and then she dies, knowing she still loves him?

 

And while even Mary Kirby describes Varric as "first and foremost extremely loyal" we've seen that loyalty tested with his brother. If Hawke doesn't convince Varric otherwise, he'll kill his brother for his betrayal and I can't imagine that if Bianca really broke his heart that he'd still call his crossbow Bianca so affectionately. Again, I like your train of thought, but I'm still leaning toward the idea that she's dead.

 

side note: you know regardless of what happened with Varric and Bianca, thinking about all this just makes me think that the scene where Varric warns Hawke against being in a relationship with any of the different party members (because they are all levels of crazy and have the potential of breaking his/her heart) is really, really sweet now. Awwwww :3

Varric is just that kind of guy, sits in the background and a good buddy when you need him. Him and My femhawke were amazballs friends even though he beat her in cards every time, but thats what friends do:p

I really like your thoughts, they make a lot of sense. I agree that he most likely wouldn't have named the crossbow after Bianca if they split on bad terms. If she's dead, then I would definitely like something along the lines of the GoT thing. Still not convinced that she is dead (I'm not sure she's alive either), but I can't wait to find out the truth.

 

And yes, that scene is very touching. He's such a great guy! And that's why we all love him
