Is he? Honestly, I've always got the feeling he's pretty cagey. His personal quests are never all that personal, he'll drop small comments about his work or family but never follow up on them, and his Scarface joke with Cassandra made it pretty clear to me that he normally deflects with humor when he's uncomfortable.

Looking at the 'completed quests' in my DA2 saves I've now discovered that I let Varric keep the idol shard for Bianca. In retrospect that seems... unwise. Hell, it should've seemed unwise at the time! But I believe that, should this be a choice that appears in the Keep, I should let this choice stand because it would seem like cheating...
And as far as this thread goes we already had the explosion happen once in DA2 thread

I kinda got the feeling he relented because he knew it was an important part of the story. He knew Cassandra needed to know the red lyrium was back in play, but he wasn't happy about it so he used a joke to put it off for a minute.
Come to think of it, can you finish Act 2 without finishing that quest? I'm a rabid completionist, so I've never tried.

Fixing bugged quest outcomes. I killed the Messenger in Awakening but the epilogue bugged out and said I let him live. Grumble grumble grumble....

Aslong as it is not a silly death but a neet one I'll be sad but give a thumbs up the writers if its good.
