Never got that one but I have been asked some really creepy stuff when I used to look darker like 'young exotic goddess' complete with the lip licking *shudder* Also had a guy old enough to be my dad grab my bum while I was next to my grandma and was asked if I wanted a sugar daddy. (My grandma nearly beat the p*ss out of him)

Ewwwww. That's gross! Some people are creepy. But your grandma sounds like a BAMF!

Oh my god, I had someone do something like that in front of my mom. She was not pleased.

I generally don't like getting hit on in public to begin with but when Its something like that it's worse. Now that I'm pregnant, I've gotten some strange people hitting on me too. Is there NO deterrent for creeps? Maybe flashing pepper spray

No deterrent, there are creepy people everywhere...

Ever since I spotted Varric in the first Dragon Age: Inquisition trailer, I’ve been excited for his return to Thedas. His jokes, tall tales, and loyalty made him my favorite party member in Dragon Age II. Sure, the rogue might be prone to embellishing the truth, but you know that he has your back. Bringing him back is a smart move on BioWare’s part, since his story has so much room to develop. We’ve seen the comedic side to Varric, but there have been hints at a hidden depth and a darker past.

I'm excited to be reunited with Varric for so many different reasons, but I broke down the areas where he’s likely to make the biggest impact in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

He’ll Tell Good Stories

This is a given. Varric is a storyteller. BioWare had good reason to make him relay Hawke’s exploits to Cassandra. We learn early on that Varric enjoys exaggeration, delighting in romanticizing heroics. He also loves to throw in a touch of sarcasm. So while you can’t trust everything he says, his words are always entertaining.

Varric’s eccentric tales are a highlight of Dragon Age II. He’s had some more time to travel since the end of Dragon Age II. This means he should have a fresh stock of new stories to tell in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Hearing Varric tell one of his wild stories is endearing; you know he’s embellishing them and some may be straight-up lies, but he tells them in such a charming, nonsensical way that it doesn’t even matter.

Will The Loyal Soul Have Your Back?

Varric always had Hawke’s back in Dragon Age II, whether or not he agreed with your choices. In fact, he stands by you no matter if you side with the Templars or mages. He always saw Hawke as his buddy, and would defend his friend without hesitation. This will be interesting in Dragon Age: Inquisition as he gets to know the Inquisitor. The stakes are higher this time around, and the choices will be grander. The Inquisitor must put an end to the chaos surrounding the breach, but will you choose change and rebirth or tradition and order?

While Varric loves blackmail and deception, he hates the abuse of power. Seeing how he reacts to your choices will be exciting, especially considering he could have changed since we last saw at the end of Dragon Age II. After all, circumstances in life often shape us and we’re not sure what he’s been up to. So while he was extremely loyal to Hawke, he may not have the same relationship with the Inquisitor. We don’t know how Varric will embrace a new face, and it’s obvious that the Inquisitor has a lot to live up to after Hawke. Maybe it will take some time for him to completely warm up to you, or maybe he has ulterior motives for working with the Inquisitor. This is an interesting angle for BioWare to explore. Obviously, you want Varric on your side because deep down, you just know Varric is a good soul and his loyalty is bound to be beneficial.

A Past Begging For More Exploration

I’ve always thought there’s more to Varric than meets the eye. He’s someone who never really found his place – running from tavern to tavern, seeking adventure to boast about – but behind all that storytelling, there’s something else. In Dragon Age II, we heard about Bianca, Varric’s trusted crossbow, many times. When asked about its name, he says it involves a girl and a promise, but it’s a story he’ll never tell. If you think about this, it’s telling: The man who loves sharing stories is unable to tell one.

Those who read the comic Dragon Age: Until We Sleep received a little bit more insight into the Bianca mystery, but we still haven’t seen its full impact on Varric. If he’s constantly carrying around this crossbow, he’s still very much connected to his past. Interestingly enough, this could be why Varric isn’t exactly searching for love. He’s flirty, but it never goes beyond that. Also, Varric seems to have a lot of life experience, from working with treacherous lowlifes to hanging out with the exclusive upper-class. Getting some insight into what made Varric the man he is today would be intriguing, and I’m hoping Dragon Age: Inquisition delves more into his past.

The Banter King

Varric is the master of the one-liner and he has a barb for every occasion. Dragon Age: Inquisition has an expansive world, so it’s safe to say that your party members are going to be interacting a lot along the way. Exploring is fun, but Varric’s extra sass and jokes abound can keep your journeys from being humdrum. Even when people have a comeback for him, he just plays right into them with an even better jab about himself. In the end, he always wins and his comebacks are never malicious – just flat-out hilarious, like teasing Isabella about wanting to touch his chest hair.

Varric and Cassandra didn’t exactly get along in Dragon Age II, and they are going to butt heads as they travel together in Inquisition. From what we’ve seen of Cassandra, she’s a no-nonsense type and I could see Varric’s playfulness getting under her skin. Remember, Varric liked to tease so much that in Dragon Age II, he gave the majority of his companions funny nicknames, like calling Anders “Blondie.” With new party members to mock, Varric is going to have a field day and I can’t wait to see the banter unfold.

Coming into a new game, Varric’s role is set to expand, and BioWare has a chance to not only give us more of what we love about Varric, but also take his character in new directions. I’m sure fans will come out of Inquisition with plenty of Varric stories of their own. You know he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Want more on Varric and Dragon Age: Inquisition? Be sure to check out our breakdown of thelatest trailer. As expected, he’s got a true-to-Varric one-liner.

Yeah thats the worst when its in front of family I had a whole car of creeps commenting on how I 'had a killer rack' when I was 9 and in the car with my mother. I had never seen her so angry before in my life.

I find having a grandma whose an ex cop helps a lot but pepper spray works pretty well too, so does hanging in large groups and keeping your back to the wall to keep anyone from sneaking up on you, but it would be great if these were precautions people didn't have to take and other people just respected personal space.

I agree. It's horrible that women can't feel safe when they go out. Maybe I'm lucky but I've been pretty much spared from these things. Of course, it could be that I have a lot of male friends. When we go out I'm usually one of the few women or the only woman in the group. That tends to scare away the pervs, no matter if my boyfriend is there or not. But as soon as you are in an all female group, they swarm around you like flies.

OK so I know this is not the same thing but...

I'm still running a muck in Kirkwall and Varric is talking to Aveline saying: "I'm thinking of switching to romances..."

And that totally caught my attention! Straight from the horse's mouth!!

Of course he was talking about his novels... But it was nice to hear it.

I'm usually by myself when I go out in stores so it can get pretty bad I just make sure to try and pull off the 'creepy and really a serial killer' thing to try and avoid getting harassed it works most of the time. Something about commenting on how quick do you think it would take to cut someone with a mini stone statue your looking at loud enough for the person creeping up behind you to hear seems to drive them off for the most part.

They're even worse on online chat rooms (I used to visit ones labeled as Teen talk or School talk when I was younger and it was crawling with creepy old guys looking for 'young virgins' And most of them said they were teachers too so that saddened and frightened me a lot as a young teenager.

Oh, getting harassed at the store has NEVER happened to me. Of course, I live in Sweden. As a general rule, we don't approach strangers at all (unless you're drunk of course). Watching swedes at a bus stop can be quite hilarious. People do their best to stand at least 80 centimeters apart :P

It's a sad truth that there are many people in this world who would benefit from receiving a severe kicking.  That kind of behaviour (the non-Swede sort, I mean) is simply unacceptable.

Varric would bring them down a rung or ten, I bet, just to keep things on track a little ;) ^_^

Sadly not so where I'm from in the States wish it was though. The worst is when its people that work at the store even if they aren't trying to be creepy some of them will still get right next to you and I just can't stand having people I don't know that close to me. I thankfully have not been harassed by any employees in a store yet so that's something :)  (though I make an exception for Cons for some reason not sure why maybe cause of the really friendly atmosphere)

I have been told I'm not allowed out any more by myself cause of how I handle people who do get to close or touchy with me^^;

There does seem to be an odd disconnect in a lot of men's brains where they think "if I'm attracted to this person, then they must be attracted to me".  There is a huge logic gap in there though, as not everyone thinks the same way.  Also, some people are just creeps as well, but yeah...it's creepy to get hit on by men when you aren't into them.  It's been a long while, but in my younger days it happened often enough that I know I didn't care for it.  My experiences were sometimes even worse then those mentioned here, and will not be typed out here or any public way.

If it's any consolation, I would probably have the same reaction. I need my personal space, so I get your frustration. I actually felt uncomfortable just reading about those store clerks. Would have freaked me out!

There was a site I used to go to I think it was called theeverydaysexismproject or everdaysexism and the stories people put on there ranged from heartwarming to needing to take a long shower uncomfortable, I'm lucky I haven't had anything bad as some of the worse ones I read on there. I don't like being snuck up on either like some people tend to do to me I get punchy when I'm spooked its just a reaction jab too so not like I can control it much. I'm not sure if its a good thing or a bad thing where I'm just glad that I've been yet to be assaulted by a store employee.

Oh, trust me. Things like that happen here too, but it's most often behind closed doors or at places like clubs and pubs.

But this subject is just depressing. So let's talk about Varric instead! Or the promised combat video we'll get tomorrow.

Yeah, important subject, but for this forum a subject change would probably be a good idea.

Y'know, we've talked about whether we let Varric keep the shard, but have we talked about whether we killed Bartrand? I'm not sure we have. Thoughts from the group on that one? That's actually one of those decisions that has my Hawkes almost perfectly divided.

In my first file I killed him but in my subsequent files I've discovered I really love sparing him. The conversation he has with Varric if you bring Anders along really moved me.

I've spent a lot of time caring for a family member with a mental illness that I can relate to that scene....it feels very real.

In most of my play throughs, I have Anders heal him and then Varric decides. So he's alive.

I happened to have Anders during my first playthrough of the game so I end up sparing him all the time just seems like a heavy thing to live with so I don't let Varric do it and risk regretting his actions on being the one to kill his brother.

It pretty much looks like a mix between Origins and Dragons Dogma.

Which is a pretty good mix.

Im more concerned about how we interact with the world. I certainly hope there are still cities and hubs to visit other then your Keep.
