Well, I don't want to depress the thread further too much right now so I'll save some thoughts for later, but I will say they've purposefully made Varric's characterization darker so you should expect the accompanying feelings from that. The other thing is that I thought that Varric's romance, if present, may knowledge of the death of Bianca or coming to terms with that.
(next quote has to do with whether Varric is a romance option)
They've really made a point repeatedly of Varric loving Bianca, so I would guess that a romance would require Varric to know that Bianca is dead (which she may already be) and come to grips with that. That could be in the way of him reuniting with Bianca only for her to die later (which may dependent on player choice)
I wouldn't worry too much about depressing the thread. We've got a good support group here. ![]()
Anyway as I've said this is a discussion thread so that does mean, as long as it's civil (which it all has been) we take the good with the bad. If you ever feel like expanding on your theory please feel free to do so here. Just maybe post some happy Varric pictures afterwards to balance it. ![]()
I'm not sure about the state of Bianca. I assumed she was dead but I've heard other people believe otherwise. I don't think it was ever officially stated that she had died.
As for taking Varric to a darker place? I've picked up on that too. That interview with Mary Kirby, I believe she talked about how he may be uncomfortable in the Inquisition. He's so far away from his home and all of his contacts in Kirkwall and then there's the suspicion that he's tagging along because he feels guilty about his part in bringing the Red Lyrium to the surface.
