I don't understand why people say Varric is "certain" to be gated for only female dwarves.  Varric lies.  As for Vivienne, as the remaining female, taking the remaining spot, that would would make me as happy as Solas being confirmed, but haven't they stated, several times, that they're not trying to be "fair" and aren't some just as put-off by all the female companions and adivisers being LI?

And as far as "it has to be Vivienne because that would be fair." goes, they surely weren't fair when divvying up genders for the companions, so that's not something I'm willing to bet on, either.

I don't think you should simply dismiss people who think Varric is straight as "silly". A lot of us are LGBTQ+ people who are tired of seeing the only bisexual men in the series show a preference for women (with the exception of Fenris), which Varric has certainly demonstrated quite clearly. I'd much rather have Solas be the other bi male LI for this reason.

I think the gating is more trouble than its worth, myself.  There's so much more fun to be had by romancing an incongruous couple.

As much as I want to see a romance arc with Blackwall, Vivienne, and Solas...Varric holds a special place in my heart.  Brand recognition, you know?

No, no, I don't think the people are silly. I think the reasons behind thinking he must be straight are silly. I empathize with your point completely, but it still stands that Varric isn't definitely straight just because he hasn't outwardly shown interest in men. His flirting thus far has mostly been playful (not serious) and just because his last partner was presumably Bianca doesn't mean he has a preference for women.

The fact we have 3 more men than women as companions (or 2 more if we count advisors) has led me to believe we'll get more male LIs instead of an equal number. But that's just my hunch.

I've grazed over that thought as well. Dragon Age has been better than Mass Effect at distributing the number of LI genders equally, but it's not unheard of mass effect 3 was pretty uneven

Maybe I'm just odd, but I'm not into the game being "fair."  A lot of people have mentioned how shorted femShep was, but...but...Garrus....

 

And that's all I need.  I'll give Thane a shot one day, but...Garrus.

 

DA is a bit different for me.  I'm going to tailor my playthrough to the playthrough.  Dalish warden = Hawke + Merrill.

 

As for Solas VA spilling the beans, it wouldn't be the first time a VA said something silly.  Or am I thinking of when Cullen's VA suggested he was a LI and they made him take it down...?

I'm not too concerned with fairness personally, but I can empathize with others who wish for it. I really had no problem with being femshep because I already had my romance downpat (not to mention I'm not a straight female so I had a small amount of more options available to me than them), but upon hearing how you can be stuck with only one choice... or even none, in 3, that seemed a little extreme, to me. 

 

I take dev talk and VA talk with a grain of salt until further notice. I don't want to be a party pooper, but I like nice, solid confirmation.

I know they say they don't pander to fans and they write a character first/romance second, and that's admirable...but a Varric LI sounds like a license to print money.  To say nothing about what Mr. Schumacher said earlier about knowing how popular he is, and things I've heard previously about him having been considered for LI.

I do have to say that the idea that one of the gender-gated LIs are also race-gated makes me wonder if one of the remaining LIs has the same sexuality but is open to opposite races. For example, lesbian Sera gated against humans and lesbian Vivienne gated against everything except for humans or straight Cullen gated against dwarves and straight Varric being gated against everything except dwarves. They could be viewing them as effectively one option. It wouldn't surprise me .
