I think "insane" is just a word that is such a part of common vernacular by now that it's use is more commonly related to things outside of actual mental illness.
I think a lot of people don't think of mental illness when they use that word, but if you look at how every time a mass murder happens lots of people, including the media, says that only someone who is mentally ill could do something like that, it obviously still affects our conceptions of mental illness.
Anyways, I'll stop taking the thread off topic so we can talk about Varric's greatness again.
