I can't really explain it, I just...it's almost like he's on a pedestal, untouchable.
On the other hand, if he's the exact same Varric from DA2, then his character stagnates and isn't nearly as interesting.
...I'm still confused. I'm not seeing where it says THERE WILL NEVER BE A ROMANCE OUTSIDE OF THE COMPANIONS AND ADVISERS.
Maybe I'm just in denial.
"When Cameron said that there were eight romances, he was referring to eight romances within the companions and advisors."
They've confirmed that there are only eight romances in DA: Inquisition and all of them will be from within the companions & advisors exclusively. So, like I said, that completely blows the Dagna romance out the window unfortunately....At this point were just waiting to find out who the remaining LI/companions are because we know all the advisors. I hope this helps explain things a little better for you.
I'm sorry your disappointed, I thought Dagna would make a great romance for what it's worth.

Ugh, a reveal that says Varric is a LI(even if he's locked to dwarves/genders/anything really) is all I want, but also everything I don't dare to hope for.
Still, maybe it's because I've read a lot of Natashina's posts this morning, but I can't shake the feeling that it would fit.

Thanks. I felt like I was having some sort of mental block, with all of you seeing one thing and me like, "Where does it say eight romances total...?"

I'm sorry I get so emotional haha. It will be like this for the next two months probably so excuse me ahead of times ;P
Don't worry give me 3 hours and I will be equally emotional if not more. I think there was a reason I've avoided these forums up until now... x:

I feel like NOT making Varric a LI would be a wasted opportunity. I doubt he's going to be a companion in a third game. for the rest of our lives, us and the devs would be like, "But what if he HAD been an option?"

Aww, guys please stay optimistic! It's the only thing keeping me hopeful about a Varric romance at this point!
It's the reason I joined up with this thread in the first place!

DG kinda did that after DA2.

That confuses me as well. But here's the wonderful thing about Bioware romances; they're optional. If you think romancing Varric will "ruin" him then don't romance him but don't rain on the parade of those who want to. As for Anders, I don't think his romance was the key "issue" people had with his character. His personality changes came down to more than him being an LI. For people to pin their dissatisfaction with Anders on his LI status seems scapegoaty.Dagna was never confirmed as anything other than being in the game. It was just pure speculation on the part of the posters.
Side tangent: Where do people get the notion that a Varric romance is somehow going to ruin a friendship with him? I haven't seen the friendships directly suffer as a result of the romance arc, myself. YMMV with Anders.

The old Anders is in there, Varric just doesn't talk about it much. Pay attention to the banter as the acts go by. Early on, he jokes with Varric and they swap horror stories about travels with the warden-commander. In Act 3 is where Anders gets mopey.

This. I used to like Anders and was hoping he was romancible in the next. Sure everyone has their problems but it just went too far in Dragon Age 2 and it made me sad. It was not because of the romance, it is how he changed so much and it was kind of a turn off all together for me.
IF Varric is romancible, hopefully they do not go that route, just a little change would be okay and our character helping him through it, emotionally and everything else... But Anders was just too far off and nothing we did change that even with love. There seemed to be no option...

Anders was an example of character development gone horribly, horribly wrong, mainly because so much of it took place off screen(skip from DAA to DA2, plus the skips between acts), and also because the catalyst for that character development came in the form of something so utterly unnatural(his possession).
Varric needs to grow and change as a character. Stagnation could well ruin him.
This is why I've been arguing he shouldn't be the Inquisitor's best friend. He played that role for Hawke; he should be something different here.

I think stuff happening off-screen was a very poor decision in DA2. Up until Lyrium Sword, I didn't see anything but Anders' word that Merdeith was gone crazy. Some evidence of that, like an NPC muttering about being asked to investigate the merchant's guild (mostly dwarf) for maleficar activity, or some such, would have been nice, a quest given by her that seems odd (find these three apostates is not an unreasonable request of someone as illustrious as a champion in Video Game Land). Something.

My theory? Either Varric didn't notice, or (more likely, since coins flow if he talks or un-talks) he didn't share this information with Cass for whatever reason.

He seemed to want to avoid Bartrand's involvement. Remember, he tried to cover what happened at the mansion?
I like callbacks. My dwarf wardens will have dwarfquisitors who need dwarves to romance.

I wonder why? Familial loyalty? Was he afraid she'd blame him? Or go after Bartrand? Being resistant to interrogation?
Wonder if we'll find out how she caught him? ![]()
