I wonder why? Familial loyalty? Was he afraid she'd blame him? Or go after Bartrand? Being resistant to interrogation?
Wonder if we'll find out how she caught him?
Well Varric is very to his family and friends. It's possible he was covering up for Bartrand or hiding bits of information out of a sense of loyalty or duty to his family.
I remember in the Varric codex entry in DA2, it talks about how his mother was a hardcore alcoholic and how Varric spent a good portion of his life caring for her. Yet he never seemed resentful about it. I think it's kind of the same thing with Bartrand. It's sort of a "I hate what you've done but I don't hate you" sort of thing.
I always liked sparing Batrand because of that; it's actually quite sweet. Despite all that has happened Varric comforts his brother and vows to get him help. I hope the fate of Batrand will play a role in Inquisition.
