To be honest I think it's mostly the race, in regards to people not wanting to romance him or not even considering the possibility. If he was a human or elf instead of a dwarf, I have little doubt that the romance fandom would be as large as cullen's is now or larger. Garrus was a "bro" character in ME1 but that didn't stop plenty of people from wanting to **** him.

Oh goodness, agreed and I can see where you are coming from on that front.

Urgh....The Bianca thing is just... Ugh... Fairness? Where is the fairness for ours if that is what the general consensus is right now. And sadly...if they want no romance with Varric, THEY DO NOT NEED TO TRY AND ROMANCE HIM just to be BFF's. That is the poorest ideal and sadly it is just wearing on me like a thick-mud cover.

People do not need to romance him and they can get their buddy-buddy thing. But at least it should be given a chance like you said.

Mass-Effect.... Garrus/Shepard. WHO KNEW THAT WOULD WORK? I think they also pulled it off very well.

Then some would give Iron-Bull a shot or think he will be chosen but go meh on Varric is kind of sad.

Equal opportunities for different views. TALL OR SHORT.

Oh, by the way, this is not a rant at you XD

Just feeling frustrated and down, and people increasing my fears is not helping while some cheer for their own love interests...

Sigh...

Haha, I didn't take it personally from you.  You basically said what I was thinking.   :D

Fairness as in: If they make Varric straight, that's one less bisexual LI for everyone.  Basically.  I can totally respect and understand where some of the posters (especially the gay and lesbians) are coming from.  It still irks me, but I have to concede on that front.  If bumping Varric off the list means that the gay men have another romance, I will accept that.   As much as I'd want Varric to be bisexual, that's much less likely then him as a race gated romance.

With that being said, I'm still thinking, GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.   I was hopeful for some of you guys to get the LIs you want and I didn't crap all over it every time you mentioned it.  Please wish us luck too, rather than saying, "Not a chance, stop asking for it.

That isn't directed towards everyone (or even most folks) that doesn't believe that Varric will be a LI, since I have gotten several "I hope you get it" comments.  Still, it frustrates me to see some of the same people I came and rooted for with their LIs can't do the same for us.

/rant off

I want another pot of coffee and I need to switch over laundry.

I would completely understand too.

If they made Varric bisexual, cool, I do not mind and would be a bit curious for some male dwarf on dwarf love ;]

Or straight...The chance is all we ask.

I also hate that too...

So... BLEH. -shakes off grime-

Rant end there haha.

I am sitting here eating pistachios and cutting my fingers on the hard shells.

I am not doing anything productive hahaha.

Yeah, I don't really get the crapping all over other people when they bring up their desired LI stuff that goes on in the romance thread... I try to never be negative even if they're talking about an LI I'm not interested in.  <_< At first I felt like one of the lucky ones having Sera, but since my other two choices are constantly put down by others I'm growing bitter... lol

I'm not doing anything productive now, either. xP I felt kinda productive drawing but now I'm just twiddlin' my thumbs. Pistachios are nom, though.

With the news that the 8 romances are all either companions or advisors, there's a better chance that Varric is an option, though, at least.

I think it's pretty fair to say that Iron Bull is probably a romance option. So assuming that the options are split equally between male and female, there's one more slot for male love interest. So either Blackwall, Solas or Varric. Besides being a dwarf, Varric honestly seems to match the male love interest archetype better than those two.

Some of the developer comments hinting towards Varric not being a romance remind me of other developer comments that casted doubt on things that actually ended up completely true in the final game. Reasons probably include because some things were up in the air until release, or to be sneaky/trolling (I remember some person named Chris Priestly who really liked to do that).

Wasn't Chris Priestly the community manager that got shitcanned for being a jackass to posters?  I think I read about him.

That and they have been very vague, trolling other times, or avoiding it.

So if anything... It might lead to it especially when they have been clearing other concerns.

I have a theory that they are doing this because he played a big part in Dragon Age 2 and brought him back because of popularity?

Not sure about the last part but I do not know what they are going to do.

I can only hope it is true since they might be kidding or avoiding it now, but for it turn true in the end.

Or disappoint and drag on a lot of fans for no reason except to make them mad?

Very true.  Fun fact: Actually DG has said that he has no problem with popular characters returning, provided that there is a real story for them.  He doesn't do "fanservice," and throw in a character just because people want to see them again.  Apparently the last time that happened was Oghren, and he admits he wasn't happy with how he turned out.

Hmmm. What about Anders? I have to say when they brought him back his story was kind of...butchered? I felt it was lacking a bit besides the whole possession and honestly I had no idea he was going that mad enough to blow up the Chantry. It was like I was not aware that he was going to do something that drastic...at all. Did DG have anything to say about Anders in Dragon Age 2?

Does Oghren have a large fanbase? I liked him enough but every time I see someone talking about him on here, for some reason it's in a negative light. Maybe it was how they handled him in Awakening, lol.

He might have at the time, but I wasn't around 5 years ago.  Some of the other longer term vets (like Maria) might be able to tell you.

I think Anders 'change' seems drastic to many people because a lot of his story is skipped in between the games he was in, or at least some really interesting stuff.

I didn't like his jokes. He was TERRIBLY misogynistic and creepy. It's not like he's some real life person, either, someone actually had to sit down and deliberately write those lines for him. Apparently those lines were funny to them.

He was a drunkard, loved to fight and was considered gross and tried to be gross. He was pretty much the dwarf stereotype. That's not fun or interesting to me.

He made a mockery of the joining in Awakening, which really detracted from it, too.

Ah okay,  thanks.  ^_^ I was just curious, because it was something I noticed. I saw something in the romance thread where someone was naming out characters they would rather see back in DA:I, one of them was Oghren, and suddenly lots of people objected to specifically him. >.>

I hear ya, on all counts.  We go from someone dying horribly at the Joining which was a short lived party member that was actually awesome, to Oghren burping.  Now that's classy and dignified.  <_<

That all... makes sense, actually. I can understand that. Admittedly, I don't get offended very easily so stuff like that doesn't always register for me, but I can really see how people might not like him now because of that explanation. :s

Hmm, he seems happy with him BUT he was not his favorite. He nails the sexuality thing really hard, and I am glad he pointed that out. Most people do not have a problem with lesbians going at it, BUT HEAVEN FORBID MEN DO. It's a ironic thing to say and feels like hypocrisy (is that the right word? xD) People get bent in all directions about this... >____> literally.

Yeah, the skipping part may be why it felt so chopped and butchered. He said that he would have wanted to make him like he was in Awakening, but they poorly executed his own growth into something that made me cringe/avoid. It could have been done better.

I also find it weird in a setting that (minus an odd comment or two) isn't sexist, Oghren acts a lot like the "male pig" stereotype.

A bit of a disconnect for me.

He was never really interesting to me because half his dialogue was just him being drunk and strange, so he was never a favorite of mine... but I never really stopped to think about how much of a crude stereotype they really did make him. :/ Yeah, I can see that. egh.

I certainly am an Oghren fan.

I think some of the problem was how he was handled in Awakening.

Origins Oghren was actually a kind of sad, tragic character the more you delved into his story. His epilog could be quite awesome, because you end up turning his life around and making him a better person.

Awakening they dumbed him down, and turned him into a kind of gross loser guy.

I also thought Oghren was out of place.

Although that dwarven and especially qunari society are arguably patriarchal or at least sexist in practice. For dwarves, there's a lot of pressure for women to produce noble children.

How exactly is Oghren sexist? Sure, he's vocal about how he is attracted to women, but Isabella is pretty vocal about men.

If anything he's just a degenerate.

It was almost like a slap to me.  My first toon that reached the end of Origins was a dwarven lady rogue.  During the Origin and later, I fell in love with the race and I loved their take on dwarves.  It was refreshing to see a depiction of the dwarves that wasn't the bearded, drunken, stereotypical dwarf that I've seen so many times before.  Then...

Me, first time through, after realizing what I had on my hands: Oh.  Hi Oghren.  Well, at least you don't sound Scottish, but BW made sure to check off every other dwarven stereotype when they wrote you, didn't they?

What's with women's preoccupations with talking about feelings?

I keep telling him, pikes are for sticking things at long range, aye? Horses and such. Not for twirling like a sissy-girl.

Those are just two things I found with ctrl+f . I'm sure there's more.

He's sexist.

He also has a habit ending with his sentences when talking to a woman with "woman."

(the quotes are with different female characters)

I know what soap is, woman! What is this flimsy slip of metal?

Dwarves resist magic, woman. There's nothing you could do.

Why are you so resistant, woman?

What's wrong with you, woman?
