I've only watched a Varric rivalry playthrough on youtube before, but it wasn't nearly as angsty as any of the other rivalries.

My character, Donovan, was a manipulative jerk. Only people he cared about got to see his true colors (being an a$$). Thus his family, Aveline, Varric, and Merrill were all exposed to his jerkiness (and were all on the rivalry path) lol
He ended up not helping Aveline with Donnic; sleeping with everyone and ending up with Merrill; stabbing Anders; returning Fenris to Danrius; and handing Isabela over to the Arishok.
He was hard to play (emotionally) for me.

Oh wow! I bet it was, kudos for going through with it though! I'm really bad at trying to play PC's who aren't nice to my favorite characters.

Especially because of the Isabela/Fenris thing and rival path with Varric. None of my other Hawke's did any of those three things.

I always try to play at least one super f***ed up character in my games. (Usually they have something "wrong" with them but he was one of the few who was just wrong but had only one thing going for him)
I will say I loved watching Aveline punch him in her office though. That made my day

Fenris didn't do anything to deserve going to back to Tevinter.
Isabella deserved whatever the Qunari did to her.
My take on it anyway.
I never really got the point of the defending the reason for a Qunari invasion.
