Going to admit I didn't pick up Mass Effect until much much later after hearing about it. I only picked it up after seeing lots of fan art of people's different Shepards and realize you could pick gender and customize and that it had some rpg elements to it. When I first saw it I thought it was solely a shooter which I'm not into, but seeing that it had BOTH rpg elements and gender choice and customization I was sold. I don't refuse to play games that have solely male leads one of my favorite games you can only play as a male but being able to choose gender is a huge bonus for me and more times than not I've notice if you can choose gender then the game has some rpg elements to it that I usually enjoy.

Point, in some cases it may have been about playing a character with personality, not just a female character. Still, I think it's a good thing to let your player know that you'll be able to play the gender of your choice - I know a lot of people appreciate that at the bare minimum.

Refuse to read books because the protagonist is a male?

Refuse to play Mass Effect, specifically. Or didn't have any interest in it. I didn't ask about books.

I'll be honest, too... being able to play as a female character is really important to me, but not a total deal-breaker. I probably would have still ended up playing Mass Effect if Shepard was only a guy, but I can understand some people not being interested if that was the case. Some most of my favorite games have solely male protagonists (most of Silent Hill, Bioshock, The Witcher), and I'm okay with that, but so glad ME and DA give me a choice. Plus, these are complete role playing games, meaning you get to make your own character (to a certain extent), so it should be an option.  ^_^

He also looks different in the hanged man.

Hes a bit chubbier i think, due to being a shattered wreck of a man.

He still looks ok as the king.

Ah, I see. I have yet to see that scene, to be honest. I've heard about it but... I'm scared to see it. xD; I'm a loser that way. I still thought he looked okay as king/warden. It was a different engine, so I expected a change.

You know, come to think of it... from 2007 until 2009 I wasn't aware Mass Effect was much more than a shooter, either. Combined with the fact that the first game was only available on Xbox 360 back in those times and having access to a PS3 and Wii was far more important to me, I steered clear.

It wasn't until the Sci-Fi Channel did a documentary special on the making of Mass Effect 2 ahead of its release that I realized how wrong I was and immediately began salivating.

I've never thought to myself, "Sure would love to play this game...BUT the main character is a male."  It's a form of escapism.  It's like saying one won't read books with protagonists too different from the reader.  Nobody does that.

I dunno, I think it is a lot more complex than that for most people and kind of depends. I know I've played games where you can only play a male (and I'll play males in games where I have the choice not to, even) but there are lot of factors that play into whether I'm interested or not in playing a game when I first here about it and one of those factors is if the protagonist can be female. So there's always the chance that for a particular game that could be the tipping point. It's not like I'd probably go, "Oh I can only play a male character in this game, so I'm not going to play it", it's more like, if I don't hear enough other stuff to interest me in the game despite that, I won't play it. Having a male-only protagonist (especially if it is a game with an otherwise customizable character, I'm more forgiven in the case of a fixed protagonist) also is likely to give me the impression that, "Oh, this is just another one of those boring traditional fantasy type RPGs" which I hate and for a lot more reasons than having a male lead. It will just gives me a poor impression of the game and if my first impression of the game is otherwise poor, I'm just not going to play it or look into any farther so I'd probably only play with it if word-of-mouth said it was good in spite of that. For example, I still haven't played any of the Witcher games because nothing I've heard particularly interests me, including the protagonist, and I've heard a lot of bad stuff about it regarding how the female characters in the game are treated.

It's possible in some cases it was less, "Ugh, Shepard's a guy," and more, "Ugh, Shepard's Generic White Space Marine Dude #8000." I didn't really stop to ask for details most of the time, but I know at least once I convinced someone to try the game after I told her about character creation and about being able to play Fem!Shep. Which part of that was more important I'll leave as an exercise to the reader. But letting female gamers know you can play a woman at least grabs their attention.

It absolutely does. It was a major factor in convincing three women I've known to try out the series.

Okay, I read up a bit.

I would have played Mass Effect if Male Shep was the only choice. I probably wouldn't have if you could only be biotic though. Engineer ftw.

Anyway, to be honest, when I picked up Dragon Age Origins, which was the first Bioware game I played I didn't know that you could be a woman. I loved it more but I think it wouldn't take away from the game. When I picked up Mass Effect it was because it was a bioware game . I did expect to have a gender choice, but I only picked it up for the bioware label and would have played it regardless because I expected good  characters, story, and something I would enjoy which I honestly did.

Yeah, I agree with you there. I think I find games a lot more appealing if the protagonist deviates from the stereotypical action hero in at least some tiny way. It's amazing how cookie cutter action heroes can be and if your protagonist appears to be a stereotypical action hero than you probably aren't going to expect more more than a generic action plot.

I was personally lucky, because I got turned onto ME pretty soon because I was fortunate enough to have a friend who was a big Bioware fan who convinced me to play.

I picked Dragon Age Origins up on a whim not knowing what to expect, I just thought the cover was cool. "OOH, DRAGON! SWORD!" I'm easy to please. Being able to play female was just icing on the cake.

A friend actually convinced me to play Mass Effect somewhat later, too. She told me it was by the same people so I thought in that case it would probably also be a game I liked, which it was.

And now I'm here. Because it was the start of my obsession. XD

I've been around since Neverwinter Nights. (<=smug) Though I wasn't a really hardcore fan until KotOR came out. After that the name BioWare was almost always a guaranteed way to get my money. Well, except SWTOR, ironically.

I picked up Dragon Age Origins because BioWare was a bit of a household name for me.  I was in love with the NWN series.  I'm not sure any other game universe will have the same depth available as what DnD provides, but I can certainly understand the necessity to develop their own IPs.

hah hah. I can be shallow like the sometimes too. "Ooh, pretty cover!" That's how I ended up first playing Morrowind and while it took me a little while to warm up to it, it ended up being my favorite game so I'm glad I did it.

I had just made a comment about people putting aside books because the protagonist isn't similar enough to them, which, while there are genres that one doesn't enjoy, is not something I've heard people do.  However, putting aside games or movies for the same reason is something I've heard before.  It's silly to me, either way.

While I'm not terribly put off by having the warden, Hawke, Shepherd, and the inquisitor all be human males in the trailers, if customization is a selling point, then perhaps somehow that should be more of a marketing focus.  Somehow.  I can see some difficulties in smoothly sliding it in somewhere like Sacred Ashes or Enemy of Thedas, and people getting confused if the main character is different every time they see them.

Me, before DA, games where I could design my character weren't my thing.  I liked Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Eternal Darkness, etc, where the cast was always the same, because it's escapism.  It's only been recently that I've seen we can have a compelling story and protagonist even if that protagonist changes from save to save.

And of COURSE Varric likes Jade Empire.

I think it's more of a customization and RPG thing than being able to pick gender. Mass Effect, at first glance, looks like another shooter in space. I can clearly see how people would overlook it until being told other things about it.

Engineer ftw.

My two favs were Sentinel and Engineer <3

~to join the conversation ~

I picked up ME because a friend told me I could play as a lady and got to customize the character. Playing as a man is not a deal breaker for me but playing as a woman can be a selling point.

Largely I get annoyed because lots of games don't have female protags because even though women make 45% of the market, the other 55% percent is thought of first in many cases. That 55% of dudes are also thought to be mostly white and heterosexual so (as Foelhe said) we get Generic White Dude #8000 and it's kinda boring after a while.

Which is why I loved that Bioware has been going the extra mile as of late. Yes you can play as a woman or a man, you can be hetero or be LG/B. You can be a bunch of different races and it's all cool! And yeah, they mess up occasionally but they make a real effort and I'm so excited to see these new characters in DAI ~

Yup, it's one of the big reasons (among a number of others) about why I'm so excited about Inquisition. We have such a diversity of characters in our party and the in the characters we can play as, as well. I'm getting way too excited again...must resisting hyping myself. :P
