I'm so excited about all of the backgrounds! And it's helped me decide which background I want to romance my first four with!
Dorian - Human mage
Varric (please, Bioware!) - Dwarf (Probably warrior, even though I prefer rogue)
Iron Bull - Elven rogue
Cullen - Qunari mage (please don't be gated against qunari!)
Now, I just need to figure out what I'm doing for the ladies.

I mean Varric could be conflicted with dating Qunari peeps because of Kirkwall and now we think he might not wanna date Cadash because of family-affiliated drama BUT Fenris can be romanceable by a mage which (as cool as it is) I think would actually be a big NO in his book and he would hate you 5ever. And that's not the case so I have my hopes up about this.
I love romancing Fenris as a mage. Which is one of the reasons I think this idea could work - I would've liked mage!Hawke and Fenris to explore that issue a little more. And Varric's generally cordial enough that he'd probably be willing to get over that with someone he trusted.

That's why I dislike the gating. An incongruous romance is so much more fun if the characters can talk about it.

I have ten Inquisitors I'm planning on taking through the game eventually, and I've got this ridiculous web of potential romances lined up so I can make sure I hit everyone. It's kind of absurd.

I tried being all neat and organized ahead of time, and typing out every character combination + romance I wanted... and it turned out being very messy and stressful... I was like "okay I want this character to romance this one... no, no... I want this one. But that one sounds so good, too!" Long story short... it's very complicated.
I hope I have it all settled and decided by game day or it will be mayhem.

I started out listing all the characters I wanted to romance for each character, in order of preference. That was easy. But you also want to cover everyone, so you have to be willing to switch things around if someone ends up gated in a way you didn't expect. And of course some of the characters might really surprise you... yeah, it's a mess.

SO Idk how many of you know the song Brave ... I like it a lot.
I found this post on tumblr a while back comparing DA2 companions to the lyrics in the song. And I think most of them are spot on... but I feel that Ander's lyrics would be more akin to: Kept on the inside and no sunlight/ Sometimes a shadow wins
as it relates to how mages are locked up in the circle and how desperate they can become, allowing the shadow to win...
lol just thinking about it >.>

This is all speculation, of course, but I kind of got the impression that Cadash's family was pretty highly ranked in the Carta. After all, they specifically mention the "ruthless Cadash crime family", and I doubt they'd care much who you're related to if you're a run-of-the-mill leg-breaker. Seems like our character is less "random grunt" and more "favored niece/nephew of the Don", which should make an interesting contrast with the Dwarven Commoner.
Yeah, I think Cadash's background will be sufficiently different than Brosca's and that it is largely a superficial similarity with them both belonging to the Carta. Cadash is a surfacer and seems to play a more important role in the Carta, so they are probably live quite a lot more comfortably (not that that necessarily says much, considering the poverty Brosca came from) and have grown up in an entirely different culture.
Of course, I would have loved if they'd given Cadash a more distinct background but I just don't think there is a whole lot that fits. Dwarven noble doesn't work, because there are two different families that could be potentially in charge and we've done that already. Dwarven warrior caste serving as a guard we be too much like the QunQuisitor's. What would a dwarven merchant be doing at a diplomatic summit: selling snacks and souvenirs? Kal-Sharok has no good reason to be there, though I do hope we either get to go to or play a character from Kal-Sharok sometime because I too curious about what it is like there.
Oh, I'm sure we'll have access to the exact same "good" dialogue choices and attitudes that all the other Inquisitors will have. It just feels a bit odd to be the good child of a crime family reputed to be ruthless. It doesn't make sense that a child coming from that family and working in that organization can be so... opposite. You'd have to be a bit ruthless to make it in that world.
I had a bit of the same problem with the Dwarf commoner in DAO. There were many options for dialogue that would make sense coming from a character with that background, but I could never get them to feel natural for me. I just couldn't fully get comfortable playing as a character with a criminal background, no matter what options were available to me.
Is it that odd that a family could have members that are so different from each other? It seems like most families have at least one member who is the odd-one-out. I know my family members are all pretty different from each other and my brother and I especially are practically opposites.
Sure, family members influence each other, but people have other influences in there lives as well. Cadash could have easily seen how at odds their family was with the rest of society and could have hated and resented that.
Well, they at least still exist. I didn't think the Cadash's were a thing anymore, considering the state of their Thaig. I think Shayle would be proud that her squishy relatives are tougher in their fleshy bodies than she first assumed lol! She may not like what they do, if she really even cares, but her family beat the odds.
hah hah. I think as long as her squishy relatives are squishy other squishy things, Shale will be proud.
So, people have been speculating that Varric and Cadash might have some bad blood between them. If that is the case - and I can't believe I'm saying this - I actually wouldn't mind too much if he was a dwarf-only romance. I have to say, tying that conflict into the romance arc and watching it play out sounds kind of fascinating.
While I dislike the need for race-gates, I do think the backgrounds give potential to make the race-gating more interesting at least since LIs will at least be able to reject the Inquisitor based on their backgrounds (like if they don't like Cadash's criminal background regardless of Cadash's role in the Carta) and not just their race.
...and who knows, maybe with their connections to the Carta, Cadash will be able to find Bianca for Varric? And of course, she'll say she's not interested in him anymore and then he is free for the Inquisitor...
Anyways, I'm pretty confident we'll be able to roleplay our Cadash Inquisitors in a way that they were involved as little as possible in the Carta and always hated working with them. They started in the human background that Trevelyan doesn't necessarily have to like working with the Chantry so I can't see why it would be different for Cadash. In the casteless dwarf origin, they also gave you an option on your quests to defy Bhelen's orders and do things as nicely as possible, so far as that goes with thugs. The only thing they might possibly do that would worry me, is if they make it so every Cadash has participated in some particularly cruel or sadistic event, but I'm doubting this will be the case since I think our background is going to be a lot vaguer and give us more freedom than in Origins.

Mmm, Just for the sake of the thread and it possibly not derailing into a mage argument i'd advise not broadcasting thoughts on the "oppression" of mages.
Some people, including myself viewed the circle as the best thing for every one, Mages included.
Just something to consider.
