If it's any consolation, there's at least one more character who is not going to be designated as a LI (Blackwall's my favourite but I'm not hopeful for his chances).
Blackwall's my second choice after Varric, so I know how you feel.

Just wanted to pop in here real quick and express my condolences to any and all Varric LI hopefuls in the fandom. Sorry things didn't work out. I was always pretty neutral on the idea, personally, but the thing that does kind of bug me is that for the second time now, dwarves are a playable race but there aren't any dwarves to romance. I'm... honestly not much for the idea of playing a dwarf, either, but I know plenty of fans are into the idea, and plenty of them would love the chance to have at least just the one dwarven love interest path.
Hell, thinking about it a bit more deeply, if Sigrun were a companion in Origins and a love interest at that, I'd be more tempted to eventually roll a dwarf, after all. So yeah... damn, heh.
Maybe someday!

They all but said outright that Varric wasn't a romance option before. I think they should have said flat out that he wasn't, but at the same time, it's a lesson learned that if they're heavily hinting, it's probably actually true.

I think we've had Liara/Tali/Merrill already for the girls. Arguably Aerie as well.

That's a good point. A shy guy would be nice. Actually, people have mentioned before that we don't see a lot of cold, take-charge guys, and that could also be interesting.
