Is it me, or are some people taking the gating harder than they would Solas not being an option at all? Granted, I can understand that in some cases, but you'd think there'd at least be some celebrating over the fact that he's a romance option.

well, he's double gated for all intents and purposes. He's left only open to a very small group of characters...It's kind of like why even bother?

If they hadn't have even bothered there would still be heartbroken people, it would have happened no matter what ![]()

Maybe I'm just so used to Varric fans and the philosophy of, "Sure, he could be only for female dwarves, but that still means he's romanceable!" I dunno. I can absolutely understand people who don't want to romance him as a female character, but it seems like the number of gamers who refuse to play an elf would be a lot smaller. He's open to a small group of characters, definitely, but players?

My thoughts too Foel, Varricmancers were all for whatever gating they got. MANY people even said that they would roll Dwarves for the first time just to romance him. I mean it's not like all the women who were hoping for Dorian have a problem with rolling male Inquisitors for him, I know I will. I think the thing with Solas is that no one saw it coming, pretty much no one at all ever envisaged it which made it a bigger shock.

For me, it's the gender thing and the fact that m/m LIs are probably going to be down an option for this. I wouldn't have cared if it was just race gating. I've never played a dwarf before, for example, (and now I'm in dangerous territory!) but I would give it a go for a character like Dorian or Solas.
Edit -- But I want to add that the gender thing wouldn't even have been a big issue for me if Cullen wasn't already straight.

Well, I know you wanted Solas as a romance option, and it sounds like you're mostly okay with how things went, so I'll offer my congratulations to you. Not going to do that in the Solas thread, things being complicated as they are right now.

That I definitely sympathize with, though I'll also point out that Blackwall could easily have the last slot. Though I know he's not your type. Sorry, in any case.

The Solas thread has been turned in Romance Thread 4 v2.0
It's a shame when this happens, it was such a lovely thread as well.

I understand that! I really do, but since we won't have an equal spread I'm not gonna panic until we know who the last LI is and who's the last race gated character. If Cullen turn out to be gated against dwarfs and qunari (a valid concern) then I'm sort of fine with giving straight women an extra option to balance it. But I'm praying for bi Blackwall or bi Vivienne. I just hope they won't turn it into a habit, this is the second DA game in a row where straight females have extra options.
I do wish we had equality, it sucks to see people get disappointed and sad because the balance is all skewed.

I wouldn't even mind things being unfair in the short term (i.e. per game) if they evened out in the long term. Which, admittedly, is one of the reasons I've been hoping Blackwall is gay and the last LI. That would definitely shake things up.

I would be happy if Blackwall was available and I would give his romance a try. He's grown on me quite a bit. Haha.
But I will feel very bad for lesbians in this case.. and, yeah, even straight guys. lol It's a sad situation, because someone is going to get shorted in any case. I hoped it wouldn't happen, but we can't change it now, eh? I don't want to derail the Varric thread. Sorry! I know you guys were really disappointed, too. I would have definitely taken a bisexual Varric over this and I'd be equally rooting for him with Blackwall if it wasn't already shot down. ![]()
But he was a staple of my party in DA2 and I imagine he's going to be a regular slot this go, also. I'm definitely happy, like all of you guys, to have him back on the team.

Honestly, long term goal: have Blackwall as a queer LI now, then next game have the companions skew more toward women. You could add an extra LI for straight guys and lesbians to balance what happened this game, and we'd have a female-majority party, which would be a nice change.

I'm always happy with bisexual options. More options to go around are always a good thing, I think. That's why I was always alright with the all bi system.

So, I have a Varric related, non-romance topic. Hopefully you haven't already covered it, at least too recently. ![]()
What do you guys think Varric will do after the events of Inquisition? We know he was very attached to Kirkwall and didn't even like going so far as the Wounded Coast. Do you think he'll move on from that in Inquisition or do you think he'll go home to Kirkwall? Maybe he'll travel afterwards and pick up new stories he can tell? I like that outcome for Varric. I like to think he's going to be getting into more big adventures out there that he can spin into even bigger adventures when he tells the story. lol

Okay. i don't want to fight, and I won't get upset if Blackwall is bi, but it seems so off for straight females to have so many options compared to lesbians and straight men. I just can't see it happening. It would be really uneven and would cause so much drama.

It's a fair point, but I think a lot of the imbalance there - if Blackwall is bi - is because of the heavy race-gating for male characters who like women. It makes it difficult for female characters of all races to have at least two options. Granted, the math there is... a little weird.

I've never seen Varric as the kind of guy who'd adventure just for the sake of it. I'd probably guess he'd head back to Kirkwall, unless he meets up with Bianca and she has some kind of greater agenda. In that case, I could see him joining up for whatever she's got cooking.
